How do I get the missing plugins?
« on: June 21, 2014, 04:24:54 am »
This is my installation history on my Ubuntu 12.04. All recommend requirements are met, knowing that I've have gigantic problems with the sound system, but working on that part, so I know there will be some complainments in the terminal about this. Beginning with the first part: starting up the wizard:

root@laban-D1826-G:/home/laban/MMORPG# ./PlaneShift-v0.6.1-x86.run

*The installation emediatly begin with a warning:

(main.tcl:9563): Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_window_set_icon_list: icons too large

Then chosing the langage (I'm from Sweden, but most of the swedish  instructions in the wizard is still in English, so I choose that language)

The setup wizard: (following the instructions, writing down the uncleare parts:)

-system wide install? y/n : running the insaller as root, and could answer yes, but choose the option no, because I'm not sure what this mean.

-permission: no. (not a clue what that will do, if my answer is yes)         The installation begin and ends without problem.

The program starter and shortcuts I wanted on the desktop during the installation process is missing, propably because my Swedish version of ubuntu have the name for desktop in my language: Skrivbord

Starting the game from the terminal instead, and it begin with:

root@laban-D1826-G:/home/laban/MMORPG# planeshift

WARNING: could not load plugin ‘crystalspace.level.threadedloader’

I know I've problem with the sound part, so the errors about it was expected. But the rest about the images is coupled to the warnings in the beginning, and those files should have been installed by the wizard (my thoughts).

This all toghether make some problems in the beginning of the game. In the option part I've turned off the sound, and after the creation of a character, a very nice  picture of a city shows up during a some kind of loading process that newer will end. After 10 minutes I shot down the computer the hard way by releasing it from its current source.
Restart.
Logged in after I have choose my newly created char, passed this splash, where I was stucked before, come to this intro part of the game, and it shot down itself this time. Problems related to the plugin warnings I've described. How do I fix it? (The day I've fixed my sound problem, this part will be solved for the game start too)

hi :D for the sound problem its most of the time easy, if you haven't tried yet, open the launcher and choose with Sound/ Sound Renderer: OpenAL. My sound didn't work either in the beginning, but that helped. For the other part...I don't know. Perhaps is there another mirror you could try and download for PS for your system? Sometimes that helps as well. Otherwise I have to refer that problem to another player understanding what's wrong there, why it doesn't open. ;) Sorry.
Bye Sulaika.

This is a bug with the game code which has been fixed and will be available in the next client update.

The vast majority of those images are part of the UI so I'm not sure why they aren't loading, or why they say they have en error.
For the crash with plugin warnings I'm not sure but it might well be due to something missing from the UI. I get the same error if i delete the Scaling Field Background from my imagelist.xml but the game still loads, I just don't see that UI component in game.

Are you using a custom UI someone made that isn't up to date with the game any more?

a system wide installation has to be done with root privileges and installs in /opt/PlaneShift by default. It also sticks a couple of scripts in /usr/bin so that any user can start the game from the command line. The privileges prompt affects who can access the files, check out chown and chmod man pages available on the net or by typing "man chown" and "man chmod" in the terminal window (do not include the quotation marks). If you have the konqueror file/web browser installed (a KDE program) you can view the man pages in a nicely formatted window by typing man: into the location bar. This will show you the index of man pages available. For specific programs you can type in man:chown or man:bash etc.

Ubuntu is a GNOME window manager system but KDE can coexist with GNOME, just not by default for Ubuntu. The terminal man pages are always installed by default in any linux flavor I've ever tried. Not all commands have man pages, some have info pages instead which are invoked similarly in the terminal window. Some have neither.

my installation on mageia linux also shows :
Code: [Select]
WARNING: could not load plugin ‘crystalspace.engine.3d’
WARNING: could not load plugin ‘crystalspace.level.threadedloader’
WARNING: could not load plugin ‘crystalspace.level.loader’

ERROR: Couldn't load plugin with class ‘iSoundManager’!
but runs fine.
I believe my first run also hung like that but the second time it ran it worked ok.

Thanks for the replies!
I can login, I can create a character. So fa, so good. When this is done, I standing on a backyard(?), in front of a open iron gate. in the middle of the picture is a chat window with green text. But I can't move, either with the arrow key's, or the mouse. The game don't react on anything, keyboard or mouse. Turning ott the computer, and start it up again, but keep me out from the game, it doesn't work at all. Propopbly because of all the errors from the installation. So, how do I get the missing plugins, and other, not sound related problems (missing catalogues etc). Want to write to the programmers, but that seems to be just a wish, they can see in that list from my installation what the problem is, and give me a solution. This was my second attempt to get this game, the first one ended up in same situation. Do this for a third time? Don't think so.
I must see myself as excluded to play this game of some reason. Pitty.

Are you running ubuntu with unity? Unity uses compositing that may conflict with PS. I believe I had some similar issues....
Anyway, on your login screen for ubuntu you can choose a session type. Start in the gnome failsafe mode and retry again.

If you are running KDE simply turn off desktop effects in 'System Settings'

I got my PS to run pretty good on ubuntu 10 thru 13 so it should work....

If that doesnt work:

I see that you have an AMD/ATI cpu/gpu, even tho these cards are pretty good the drivers wont always work too well, especially in ubuntu... have you installed the generic ati-driver or did you install the propriety (fglrx) driver? AMD has stopped supporting the driver tho (atleast I think so.... after my issues with AMD/ATI I switched to intel and never had any issues, so not totally up to date on AMD & Linux)
if it wont work with your videocard you could try to install MESA; with MESA you dotn neccesarily use the propriety driver but it does support 3d. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesa_%28computer_graphics%29)

Install opts:
Installing as root isnt really neccesary, I've installed PS in /home/$USER/bin for years now and it works just fine. (If you have more than 1 user it might be easier to do a system wide install tho)
For the permissions you can choose yes and set to 775 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chmod#Octal_modes) which is the standard (I believe)

If you have trouble with the launchers for your desktop/menu check this folder /home/$USER/.local/share/applications/
In this folder you will likely find some .desktop files.. these files describe the options for your launchers.

My menu-launcher looks like this:

Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Comment=
Exec=/home/$USER/bin/PlaneShift/pslaunch
Icon=/home/$USER/bin/PlaneShift/support/icons/psicon.png
Name=PlaneShift
NoDisplay=false
Path[$e]=
StartupNotify=true
Terminal=0
TerminalOptions=
Type=Application
X-KDE-SubstituteUID=false
X-KDE-Username=

I hope it'll all work out for ya, feel free to send me a pm if you have any questions...

One more thing: are you running a x86 or a x86_64 version of Ubuntu? If you are running the 64bit version (which is likely on modern computers) you have to use the x86_64 installer for PS too
