Single Author Stories / A letter to a dead father
« on: February 11, 2020, 07:16:14 am »
"Hello,

I don't know how you'll manage to read this, but I'm sure you can do it. I still remember the time we finally laid you to rest, with the small ceremony at the Temple of Talad. It seemed unreal. For months on end, I thought I saw you, keeping an eye on me, after you were gone.

Suppose you'd like to know how I'm doing: I'm doing fine for myself. I've become a good enough smith now, at least I churn out perfect pieces more often than not. I have yet to get even close to your repairing skills - I think it's a bit shameful that I could never repair properly what I've made myself, but I guess they're completely different ways of working.

Of course, I still miss you. After all, who doesn't miss their parents when they're gone. By Dakkru... I sometimes even think about my mother. Not in a bad light, or in a good one either, but sometimes she comes back to me in my thoughts. With how old she must be now, I guess she's moved on already - I hope you have found it in yourself to forgive her.

You should see Sereenya. She's not a cub anymore: just about the other day I got word of her having slain her first ulbernaut on her own. We had...  a bit of a fight over it. I mean, I didn't get to hunt my first ulbernaut until, well, until after I first arrived in Hydlaa, when I thought you were gone the first time. She presented me with its heart - you have no idea how hard it is to pretend to be disappointed and upset when all you want to do is laugh and hug that person. But I guess if I started acting like that she'd start wondering what I had done to her real mother. Maybe I should be a little softer on her - after all, whether I like it or not, she's an adult now.

I haven't found anyone to keep me company, yet. I became the councilor of an Enkidukai aristocrat seated in Amdeneir, but he's much too young, and I don't have any interest in him. It seems that I only have friends and acquaintances right now, and I'm content with that. Drinking, crafting, adventuring... I don't do it alone anymore. But I haven't found anyone that completes me, yet.

Ah, I'm rambling. I miss you. Sometimes I wonder what you'd do or say if you were here. And to think we argued so many times over stupid things, and I used to think you knew nothing. But I guess you don't know what you have until you lose it.

With lots of love, your daughter,
Mishka"

The warm breeze rustled the greying fur on the Clamod's face as she climbed up onto the roof of Harnquist's smithy, ignoring the sour look and muttered complaints of the smith (something about 'blasted cats' and 'replacing tiles'). Once there, she sat down carefully, and looked at the closed envelope. The Azure Sun was starting to dim, with that dying light that tinged the city orange. Holding the envelope with both hands, it started to char and burn where her fingers touched as she uttered a soft incantation, the flames consuming the paper quickly. Ashes flew up, picked up by a small gust of wind, and danced towards the middle of the Plaza, disappearing completely before reaching the great, looming statue of Laanx.

And then, Mishka folded her legs some, hugged her knees, and watched the Crystal die off slowly, until the foyers on the houses lit up with candles and torches, and night fell upon the city, with the Enkidukai looking up at the small dots of light that were stuck to the Dome, smaller crystals glinting in the dark.

Two of those smaller lights looked like a pair of eyes, looking down on her.

General Discussion / Player-given quests
« on: October 08, 2017, 05:49:00 am »
Has it never occurred to you how quests can be implemented into player characters? Think about it:

- Players have the option to teach other players a craft, in exchange for something, or out of their own good will. For example: Harnquist teaching you how to work with metal can be complemented with a player character giving you pointers on how to do it, in exchange for a circle.
- Fed-Ex quests: a newbie player could be employed to send messages back and forth between players for some kind of fee or profit, like a decent looted weapon or inclusion in a guild, to cite two examples.
- Materials for goods: crafting weapons or armor, in exchange for gear. "Get me ten iron ores, and I'll make you a brand new sabre!"

How many times have you done or seen anyone do this? It opens up a brand new form of introducing newbies to roleplay, and benefitting each other mutually. It makes them feel part of something.

Wish list / [Help offered] Tool making manuals
« on: September 11, 2017, 06:55:36 am »
I see in game that there's both a tool making skill, and gems that will help boost tool making. I'm wondering, if someone were to write a book on how to make tools, you know, listing parts, materials, etc. and then writing quests for it, would it be possible to have that skill implemented?

Complaint Department / Keep the billboards clutter-free, please
« on: August 29, 2017, 06:44:59 am »
This is both a complaint to the GM team and a request to the playerbase.

The Hydlaa billboard has become really cluttered. Sure, people rarely use books now, and prefer to use maps/parchments because they look prettier, and they can be adorned and whatnot. I'm thinking that maybe they are even less resource intensive, I don't know.

Still, I'm asking the GM team to please tidy up the billboards if it's possible, and while I'm at it I'll suggest to you other players that, to allow GMs to know for how long has an advert there, you put, in brackets, the date when you posted it. That way it can be monitored better, and removed if there hasn't been any activity or confirmation by that player that they still want it there.

The Hydlaa Plaza / A general apology from Mishka
« on: August 25, 2017, 11:57:44 am »
Hello PlaneShifters,

Over the course of the last few weeks I have come to realize many things. It has only been possible thanks to friends trying to beat sense into me, insisting that I could change, and even people whom I don't know how to classify, but that cared enough, or at least were honorable enough to tell me the truth and how they felt about me. Many red faces, tears, and mopping sessions later, I am willing to admit I have done wrong, and move on along a path that hopefully will help me fix or mitigate most of the harm I've done to people in the past.

I joined PlaneShift in June 2010 (that's 7 years now, to put you in perspective) as a happy-go-lucky person with little to no knowledge of English, enough to fend myself around the world, and not much more. During the course of the first year or two, I had slowly began to turn into something that would define me for the years to come, up until now.

I became callous, resentful, pushy, demeaning, condescending, unnecessarily mean, rude, and a long et cetera of qualificatives that turned me into a figurative and literal troll. And I say literal because the bigger my contempt grew, the further down I dug the hole in which I found myself. I looked back, and saw all the bridges I had burnt, the ones I had let rot, and all the chaos I caused among people who once cared about me.

For a very long time I let the petty stuff get to me, making a world out of every issue, blowing everything out of proportion. I became enemies with many people, and some of them either still hate me, or just don't care about me (or yes, even the game, just to avoid me) enough anymore. I looked back and they are many more than I can remember, and those I remember I don't have enough fingers in my hands to count, I'm afraid.

Finally I realized all this, remembered all the people I hurt, many of them very good people and even former friends of me, and it just became unbearable. I couldn't believe that I had done that to people that once cared so much about me, and I literally (in the figurative sense) stabbed them in the back, for no other reason than paranoia or pettiness. By addition, I also hurt the people close to those, causing even more resentment and sour feelings, and distancing myself further from people.

I'd like to come clean to all of you, and apologize. Because I've been an asshole (sorry for the strong word), petty and reckless, and for hurting so many people. I'm not asking for second chances, but I would really like to atone for my sins, whichever they might be. I know not many will want anything to do with me, but those who do are more than welcome to address me, publicly or privately, and we can talk it through. I assure you than more often than not I will be sorry that I was such a bad person to you.

Yours sincerely, Mishka

Wish list / Freemium content to help pay for development
« on: August 06, 2017, 03:48:01 pm »
I know, I know, this is kind of backwards... But PlaneShift is known for being free. I'm not saying you should give away EPIC zOMG 2 HAXX 4 ME items, or treat players with favoritism. Some games do this with boosters and in game cosmetic items.

The idea would be something like this: if you're tired of grinding stats, spend 1€ or the equivalent for 10 levels in game, or an item that can be redeemed at some NPC to get that. Grinding stats isn't that useful, anyways, and with them being capped at 400, that'd mean you'd have a potential of 35x6=150€ per player. Since they're only useful when you've maxed skills, it wouldn't necessarily give anyone an edge over others.

Another variant of this would be to allow players to engrave stuff they want, at whatever time they feel like. So for a small fee they receive an item in game that they can redeem so they can engrave a crafted item. I can see many crafters using this feature.

Or maybe I'm just rambling. But this would help suffrage expenses for the server, or even pay people something for their time as developers.

Complaint Department / I have been slighted! [Crafting bug]
« on: July 28, 2017, 07:54:40 pm »
I was making some armor, and I messed up the quantities for a piece - took 4 steel ingots instead of 3, made a set of steel plates... dangit.

So I plop them back in the forge, this should get me my ingots back, etc. So in total I crafted 16 pieces of that (I wasn't paying attention), and the expected yield would've been 64 ingots - I only got 32. WHAT!!

I go to my book, read it frantically... "Hammer Red hot set of steel plates into 2 steel ingots." Then I go to ingots "Shape 4 heated steel ingots into set of steel plates."

I want my ingots back. All 32 of them.

General Discussion / What if and teenage poetry
« on: May 21, 2017, 06:36:21 pm »
Surely you've all had a phase where you were all "gloom, woe is me, forget this world, curse be upon ye" and acted edgy, and even went on MySpace to write cringy stuff about ravens and whatnot. Well.

What if all the stuff written in the Death Realm is just because Londris is just an edgy edgelord, and Dakkru is actually rolling her eyes at him and sighing, and it turns out she just has to curse you because of a higher power? Or what if it's not actually her? What if Dakkru actually doesn't exist?

Discuss.

The Hydlaa Plaza / Let's Discuss Rigs
« on: March 02, 2017, 12:08:05 pm »
So recently I've been getting more and more into building a computer. Ultimately, my goal is to get enough money to build a computer myself, and while I've been investigating on my own, I like to know what everyone else (definitely savvier than me) think about it. I've managed to plan a minibuild (and I mean miniATX, but I might scrap that) with about 700€, even though I might get a better, bigger case.

So, to start the discussion, a few questions:
- What format do you like best? Good ol' ATX, miniATX, micro...?
- What's your favorite brand/brands for cases, mobos, power supplies, etc...?
- Intel or AMD? Don't turn this one into a war!
- 2x16 or 4x8 for RAM? What do you think? Those numbers are just for the example!
- nVidia or ATI? Again, no warring here!

You can also share your rigs, and rate other people's rigs!

Development Deliberation / Regarding Mac development
« on: January 09, 2017, 06:03:42 pm »
I've always heard how developing for Mac is hard, costy, etc etc. But I never really got any of it clear. In the last PlaneShift UE4 update (the Crystal Run game) it was hinted that a version of the game couldn't be done for Mac, because nobody had a Mac or was a developer or whatever.

Well, I have a Mac, running macOS on actual Apple hardware, I'm a registered free developer, and I'm wondering what can we Mac users do for this, in regards of packaging the game for our platform, at least.

General Discussion / On Updates, Wipes, and Migrations
« on: January 04, 2017, 05:54:00 pm »
There is no doubt that the new little UE4 minigame using PlaneShift's assets is a big step towards the completion of the game in a whole brand new engine, shiny and powerful. It's been something that the playerbase has been waiting for, and for quite a long time: to drift away from an engine that was slowly becoming obsolete, and step up into the leagues of powerful indie (and free) MMOs. Even if I can't try it out myself because there is no macOS version of the client, I know that it's going to be a huge game-changer (in more levels than one), and I expect it with the giddiness of a kid on Christmas' Eve.

Now, for the bitter part of updates, and especially updates as big as this one... Let's not raise our voices. Calm down, read on, and think before you scatter around mindless hate and confusion. Understand that it is not my intention to cause a ruckuss here, and I am simply concerned about it. Read throughout the post, and then give it a five-minute reflection before you reply.

I am going to talk about wipes. There have been wipes in the past, and there have been wipes in not so past. Just a while back we had a partial quest wipe that, while it didn't affect our character progression too badly, it upset some people for whatever reason. But that's not what's worrying me. You can take away our rivnaks, and we'll go back into the Winch to get a brand new one. We'll repeat the way quests, and we'll move on with our (virtual) lives.

But I'm droning on, and I haven't raised my concern: I'm worried, very worried that there will be no option to save the current advancement of our characters. Those maxed skills that took months to achieve, the ability to hunt maulberlords, being able to cook every single dish and variation under the Azure Sun... Will that be lost? Will we be able to keep it?

Think about it. I hope to hear from a developer, and that they uphold their promise of "no more wipes."

I believe there is almost no roleplayer out there that hasn't felt curious about that mysterious temple the NPCs in the sewers talk about. Some wonder why they're crazy, or ridiculously calm and uncaring, or treat you like a madman when you mention it. The truth is, however, that the temple is reachable for players - there is evidence (even if OOC only - admitting to being a Black Flame is a death sentence in itself, be it thanks to the own members, or via pterosaur flight to the Crystal) that this temple does exist, and that their members are active and mingling among the general public, some of them you'd never expect, even.

You know who you are.

Frustration hit me, however, and for a good reason. While I'm not admitting to playing a Black Flame character -and for the reasons listed I wouldn't, and you'll see why- I agree they're the baddies with the least help and representation. "Oh but Mishka, the Outlaws have a special guildhouse hidden somewhere!" Well, let me remind you: not all Outlaws are Black Flame, and not all Black Flame are Outlaws, and this is just an example. Let me be clearer: when you become a Black Flame, there is no handholding. No support, no visible lead, no nothing, whatsoever. Nada, niente, nyet, zero, nil.

There is no lore other than "bf is ebul," there is no visible lead, no joining a guild, not even a GM telling someone "do this, idc how just don't get caught alive." It is a great, or rather a huge opportunity to give people a constant source of conflict, something they don't know when and how will strike, distrusting everyone and their mother.

Just saying this out here in case someone wants to think about how to fix it.

The Hydlaa Plaza / A Small Victory for Competitive Games
« on: December 14, 2016, 04:45:45 pm »
As ohnickel mentions in his video about the best player rank for Overwatch, the Korean (the good ones) government has passed a law that renders any kind of program used to get advantage over other players, as well as creating and distributing them, illegal (we're talking aimbots here). This doesn't mean you get b&, or get a penalty, or whatever punishment the game masters would give you. It'd mean that you can pay up to $43,000 in fines, or face 5 years in jail. Let that sink in.

With PlaneShift's problem with botters - and I know there are some around, what do you think of this law? Should more countries adopt it? Should companies enforce it? Why do you think someone would use such a program to have that little extra edge, when there's no money involved? Doesn't it take the fun away from the game? Share your thoughts!

Development Deliberation / Unused map backdrops
« on: December 08, 2016, 03:18:17 pm »
So, snooping around in folders, I found that in the path for Mac /Applications/Planeshift/art/skins/base/client_base.zip/maps/ there are some folders named "cloth", "leather", "parchment", and "vellum", which are all working backgrounds for in game maps. Right now, though, the only one available is "leather", but renaming folders and repacking I'm able to use the others. How about properly implementing this so maps actually have more variety, since we can't use more than 200 elements in them?

Proof of my find:

General Discussion / Stop using PhotoBucket! ... please?
« on: November 26, 2016, 05:23:11 pm »
Stop using Photobucket, please! Never have I seen such a bad image hosting website, it's pretty hard to link images directly from there, and it sends you to some crappy lightroom place. Here's a list of websites you can use to upload your pictures:

  • FruBar - doesn't require you to register, but in exchange EVERYONE can see your pictures
  • Imgur - requires an account, can create albums
  • Flickr - requires an account, can create albums
  • DropBox - requires an account, not only for pictures
  • Drive - service by Google, like Dropbox, but also offers editing tools for documents

If you have any others, list them here if you'd like.
