Problem with Login screen
« on: August 30, 2012, 10:32:54 pm »
Greetings. I got another machine it's a macmini running 10.6.8 snow leopard.
Downloaded PS, put in apps folder on HD, updated, even did a repair.  I can get the intro page and then the login page.
Put in my e-mail and pw, clicked login and then it freezes. I have, at times, after a long wait got the beginning of the load of the page where you choose which of your character you want, or choose if you want to create character. But only half of that screen comes up after a long wait, but freezes again.

Anyway, can anyone help me? What could the problem be? How do I fix it.
I never had problems before on my intel iMac. Below is my latest hardware and graphics info. Thanks for any reply.

Your video chipset is intel GMA 950. Or brief: Crap. Sorry. Please use gaming hardware with serious OpenGL 2.0+ support.

Interestingly, I have the same machine configuration running ubuntu linux 10.04 and some time ago I've managed to run planeshift by installing Desura Client (http://www.desura.com) and letting desura do the rest.
I could sip a mug of coffee while loading/running the game, but no errors.

I don't know it there's a desura client for osx, though.

So at the end, I quote LigH.

It might work with the outdated "rlcompat" renderer. But it is not intended to be used this way.

Hello all.
The machine was formerly a family members. It had an OS far more
updated then my other machine. I was at a point where I couldn't do
anymore or update on my other machine. And if that didn't stink, my
LCD screen started to go.  :'(

So there is nothing I can do with this macmini? Can I replace my
graphics card? Or do something, or get something else to aid in
running PS.  I'm not much of a techie.

I got in game once while messing around. But since I hadn't seen
the whole login screen to actually choose which character, I got
one of my characters that I do not use much.

Anymore suggestion or answers? Thank you for your time and answers.

I've used a 2009 mac mini with Leopard... not Snow Leopard... still do at times and it runs PS just fine. Starting up is a bit slow, but afterward is playable. I don't even think the graphics are turned down to the lowest either but could check if you like. Good luck!

The GMA 950 on my old Macbook wouldn't let me run any version of PS past 0.5.5 Its a little bit of a problem. :/

Thank you all for the information.
To Dannae: with your mac mini, what garphics card do you have?

Speaking of graphics card. I checked the local mac place. They
cannot do anything with the card in the mac mini I have. The
higher end mac mini now has for graphics an: AMD Radeon HD 6630M.
By any chance, does anyone know will that work?

Also in terms of mac tech, what Mac would any of you recommend?
to play PS?  Thank you in advance for any replies.

Radeon HD 6xxx should be a lot more capable and compatible. The M (Mobile) is a sign of reduced renderpower, so it may not always be quick, but at least it should work and usually look well.

I would not recommend a Mac for PS at all: It is not well supported (hardly any developer is able to debug Mac builds and fix Mac specific issues), and the price-performance ratio can't compete with even cheaper PCs specifically set up for gaming.

Mac is supported by us, and is recommended like any other supported platform. The issue on the hardware above is mainly the graphic card which seems not powerful enough. You can try by lowering all settings, but it's not guaranteed it will work.

Hi KayKay, this is the info I got on the mac mini I use sometimes for PS and it runs quite fine for playing in my opinion. My regular iMac is a lot better but the mini works too. Starting up takes about 2 min. to get to the login page, but after that it's definitely playable. Hope all this helps.

If they ever make this game not work on mac I wouldn't play any more.
