Guilds Forum / New players guild: The Academy
« on: January 02, 2005, 05:08:14 pm »
This may be the only guild that expects other guilds to recruit its members.
It has members that are complete beginners and players that are on loan from other large guilds. Think of it as a try before you buy policy.

There will be some core members who set up the training and take care of the day to day planning but there won\'t be more then 10 of us.  We will start the classes and show the players around and so on.

Once they have the minimum skill level they are turned over to the guild members for further training in that guild\'s ways. If the player does not like it they have a perfect opportunity to change guilds without any paper work. In fact, they will be encouraged to go through several different guild trainers to find a good match.

So what do the guilds get out of this? Players that know what they are doing. Players that are more likely to stay with a guild and be an asset to it.

What the training is:

Basic dry stuff
A fighting skill of 3
A magic skill of 3
A trade skill of 3
Any other skill of 3
The numbers can change, by the way.  However, the guild trainer may want to up the requirements fore their guild. At that point they are recruits and probably should be low level guild members, not trainees.

Read the PlaneShift Manual. And there is a test! Open book of course.

Do a quest with minimal help.

Role play help.
Since I play a friendly stone breaker that cracks jokes I will need help on this one.
Write a proper bio.
How to chat in character
Why flaming and being crude is not role playing and can get you banned.

Maybe a part on how to post on a BBS and not look like an idiot. Very optional.
Maybe a blurb on how the search button works.
Etc.

Correction,  Not Optional!

How do you enter the sewers?

Dam, proved wrong again!
But on the bright side I got my first recruit. :D

We need a healthy debate on this. It is important in principal to have a minimum standard to work with. In some guilds trade skills are more important and in others it\'s role play. But say not being totally lame with a weapon (its hard to hold you\'re head high when your butt just got kicked by a one eyed rat) seems basic.

_________________________________________________________________
Guild level is broken up into the usual 9 levels

9 Leader: this job will be rotated due to it not being as glamorous as you would think.
8.Trainer: you are either training someone or you aren\'t in the guild. Of course, it isn\'t a full time job (Players have got to play after all) and I expect turnover but that is about it.
7.Visiting guild member: If they want to be a trainer I won\'t complain. But they may want to let players know they aren\'t really ?in the Academy.?  Another advantage to this if you\'re guild is not official due to lack of players it gives you a title that lets people know you are recruiting.  However, if we determine that you are a new player  starting a guild, may we offer our advanced program.
6. Sub trainer: At this level a player either finds a guild, is kicked out or can apply to be a trainer. Most likely we will take you after a month.
5.Advanced: See below.
4.Adept: You aren\'t new, you just have a new character. Yes, you will be training others.
3.Recruit: Basic training all complete. Ready to rumble.
2.Novice: Has completed 2 or more elements.
1.Starter:

A player has one week to hit the next level.  But doing the whole course in one week should be doable.

A new player can\'t lose on this one. Even if they don\'t ever want to be in a real guild (This is not one it\'s more of a player kick start) they get some basic player training and a character that can do something. And if they are looking for a guild they get a sample pack of them to find one that suits them.

Even a player that has been at it a while with a new charter gets to have fun. You get to put at the top trainee rank and take a group to the top with you. If you are recruiting them you get some quality time with the new players. You can\'t lose.

So we train them and you keep them.  This is our policy.

Advanced programs You don\'t necessarily have to be in this guild to take them.
1.How to run a guild. This one won\'t be taught by me. Trust me, we will all be better off for that.
2.Advanced play. How to run a raid.
3.Advanced play. Skill level 6 for 6. Now you\'re styling! Follow on, must still be in the Academy guild and this one will be guided by other guilds due to the need to specialize.
4.Advanced play: Extreme role play. I won\'t be teaching this one either. Moogie HELP!

There has got to be more so post away.

Since this is more like the BISM and not a guild per say I don\'t know how this would be treated in the planeshift system.  So, I\'m just running it like a guild because it\'s easier.  I also don\'t plan on running this guild forever so it has to be self-sustaining.  I\'m going to be building the website if it seems popular and hosting it on my own web space.  So, let\'s see if it will float or die.

So what do I get out of it? I like helping players. It is what I do anyways. Maybe it will rub off on others, who knows.

General Discussion / Is this a hack?
« on: December 31, 2004, 06:39:38 pm »
So the question is.
Is the use of a nostromo keypad and/or any other keypad that has macro capability not legal in planshift?

I have asked several people that have seemed pretty darned disinterested in this.  However, it gives you some pretty major advantages in gameplay.  For instance, you can create a macro that will mind for you for as long as you want.  The other deal is it will do any skill which requires repetitive actions to be accomplished for as long as you want.  This means you can set your character on auto and go make coffee.

There are several ways to foil a gamepad.  One is that a gamepad has no random number generator.  Therefore, it operates at an exact time.  Therefore, if you time actions they come out to an exact time.  So, to get rid of the script kiddies you could merely have your code time the actions and then reject all actions were within .2 seconds and there you would have your gamepad people.

The second way to get rid of gamepad people is to mix it up a bit.  This would entail a little code.  What you do is make it so that it is a little different every time you need to run a trade skill that you have to give a little different response every single time.  For a human that is not much of a problem.  For a gamepad macro it isn\'t going to happen.  Therefore,  adding this would make it impossible for a gamepad macro to react.

Sorry if I just killed any chance of a gamepad macro of working.

The next point is a gamepad really a problem?

I seriously don\'t think it\'s much of one.  If it is in fact a repetitive task you, the developers, need to know that.  It doesn\'t help in roleplaying in anyway. And, afterall, this is a role playing game.  Therefore,  any repetitive task isn\'t really a role playing element.

Just thought I would throw this stuff out.

Fish.

What system do you have?
Mine is running at 120FPS Mostly to 54FPS At worst.

CPU: I have an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ at 2.2GHz. It is the same as a P4 at 3.6GHz. I think you should not go below a P4 at 2.8GHz.

RAM: I have 1GB but I think 512MB is OK. Up grade if you don\'t have 512Mb.

Mouther board: Ram access must be over 333MHz or you are domed. Get one that handles 8X AGP.

Video Card: This one can make or brake the hole system. One rule of thumb is spend as much fore you\'re video card as you do fore you\'re CPU.
I have a SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9600XT
Memory/Effective Speed: 256MB DDR/600MHz
BUS: AGP 4X/8X
Ports: VGA Out(15 Pin D-Sub) + TV-Out (S-Video/Composite Out) + DVI
Support 3D API: DirectX 9, OpenGL 1.5
Max Resolution@32bit Color: 2048X1536

Connection: Dam little data is getting transfered. So ping time is the only thing that can hurt you. If you are using a satellite link (The one\'s in space) you are dead. And wont be able to run any on line games. Other then that the problem isn\'t the connection. So unless you can say  that it is over say 2.0 sec or something crazy posting that is you\'re problem is a grate way to get flamed.

The point is if you spend about $700 U.S. then your system be good for about a year.  The system I have cost around $1,000 U.S. including the operating system.  If you spend a whole lot more than that then you\'re paying a lot of money for a system that you probably won\'t use all the way until it\'s worth about $700 to $1,000 again.  The key is {and where I have all the fun} is to spend as little money as possible to get the maximum possible gaming machine.  Mine plays Doom 3D at high resolution at around 40 frames per second.  Not bad, huh?!  Got to have DOOM!

That about covers it fore hardware so if you got a kick but system and still ?got lag? there is problem with software. So lets go over some ways to fix that up.

Spyware: I have often wondered if this crap should even be legal. Spyware sucks! How ever if you got it kill it with -
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
and
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
and
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
If you don\'t it will hammer you.

Virus scanner. These babies are resource hogs knowing when to turn the suckers off is key to performance.  Since it\'s unlikely to catch a virus from playing Planeshift turn it off.  This is especially true with Norton Utilities which is the King Kong of virus protection hogs.

All of your communication software \'you need to turn all this crud off too\'.  It\'s important because it will interrupt your planeshift server and client.  And cause all type of havoc.

Another tool is control alt delete.  And find out if any other process is taking up clock cycles.  Try to kill them.

Another great solution is if you get kicked off abnormally fire up Planeshift and quit immediately.  This will close down all of the plane shift applications properly.  If you don\'t you will get all sort of bizarre stuff that won\'t allow you to run it.

And now fore the most important point. UP DATE ALL THE TIME!! Run the update every day or don\'t post that you have a problem. GOT IT!

DMZ:  I run with a Linksys router. The DMZ is a place where a system gets all of the socket connections without problems. Be warned throw you can get spanked by hackers  and crackers if you do it wrong. Try port range forwarding or port triggering first. Or use Linux (I use SuSE).

This has worked for me quite well.  I\'m able to get pretty good frame rates by following these rules.

Wish list / Land of Ice and Snow
« on: November 21, 2004, 12:00:22 am »
Where only the hearty survive this soul rending zone.  Harsh winds tearing at a frozen land bite into you as you forge ahead.  Your sled moved quickly through the forest as your team of six strong dogs run pulling you towards the next challenge.

Powerful monstrous, biting cold, heavy equipment, deep snow and mountain ranges that are pretty much a death trap.  If you are looking of a challenge this is it.

This zone concept is designed around several concepts.  To maximize the value of a skill based system.  To cater to the soloist.  To get the players to develop the zone and empower them.  To give guilds a prominent role in zone development.  So let\'s take each part and expand it.

The Hydlaa Plaza / Game Port commands for linux c++
« on: October 22, 2004, 02:54:09 pm »
I\'m working on a home project where I have to measure the inside and outside temperature with a computer.  I have figured out how to use a thermal resistor from Radio Shack to move the joystick sence input.  There is a catch though.  I don\'t know which library in C++ reads the joystick port in Linux.  If anybody can direct me to which library reads that device this project would be on its way.  It would be even better if there was a scripting language like Python that had a module that would read the joystick port.  But, after a lot of searching I haven\'t found anything.

RYL Sanctuary

This is an RPG maker that is 2d.  It\'s got a okay database.  There seems to be a lot of resources out for it such as pictures and tutorials.  It might be a good way for somebody to see how an rpg is made.  Since my 13 year old son has figured out to do most of this stuff it can\'t be too hard.  Or, maybe he\'s really bright.  I don\'t think so. ;) However,     it\'s a lot of fun.  :)

Guilds Forum / Guild concept - A new way to play a game
« on: May 01, 2004, 11:18:41 am »
I\'ve been intrigued by the whole citrus guild thing.  After thinking about it for awhile I think I\'ve come up with an idea on how to build a couple of guilds that could be a lot of fun.

The concept came from two guilds where the leaders don\'t really hate each other and the guilds seem to want to play.  It seems a lot like 2 sides on team sports.  Really good friends in real life playing a game against each other.  You could even have people swap sides to even up the game play before a round is played.

The second part of the idea is what is the absolute minumum thing that could be incorporated into the engine to have a game.  Suppose you had 2 capturable components like flags.  The game of capture the flag would certainly be one possibility.  However, since you aren\'t installing rules into this game only the possibility of having 2 flags to capture most game rules are made up.  Therefore, it could get a lot more complicated.

For instance,

Hide and seek.  Try to find the object (it doesn\'t necessarily be a flag).

Breaking and entering.  Getting into the opponents guild hall and hauling off their trophy.  Once again, it doesn\'t necessarily have to be a flag.

Make up one.  My mind is racing with all the possibilities.

Another possibility is coming up with guild wars as a game.  If you have the opportunity to join more than one guild then you could join one of the sides of the team as if it was a guild and have fun.    The guild leader of both guilds could actually be the same person who is hosting the game.  It would be 2 subcharacters that person owned.

At any rate, the simple idea is to have 2 guilds permanently at odds with each other that can be joined on the fly to play a game.   The second part is to have a simple device (like a ball you can kick or something like that) where the rules are made by the players.

The Hydlaa Plaza / High end Gaming Hardware
« on: April 14, 2004, 09:24:44 pm »
Awhile ago one of the developers, I think Vengeance, said they were building the game to use the next generation of gaming hardware.  I usually look at the high end stuff on the idea that I\'ll be buying it 6 months to a year from now.  What you normally find out is that you don\'t actually need the 3,000 dollars U.S. to buy a decent gaming machine.  So if you buy things that came out 6 months ago you get a lot more bang for your money.

The first deal is the whole g-force versus the ATI card dual.  G-force has a new offering to ramp it up and it\'s looking mighty fine.  It will be interesting to see what ATI does in response.  But for people like us grudge matches like this one is a really, really good thing.  The review from Tech TV says the new g-force is the best card they\'ve ever laid their hands on to date.  Here are both links.

Review: Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra

GeForce 6800

The next thing I\'ve come across is a computer called a shuttle.  This seems to be of special interest to gamers who go to lan parties.  To get the same kind of power you can pack into the small computer boxes in a lap top, you\'d be paying $3,000-4,000 U.S. They don\'t have a whole lot of space for accessories.  However, for gamers all you really need is a good video card and a fast mother board.  The fact that it only has space for one hard drive and 2 cards shouldn\'t be relevant.  It isn\'t really designed to be a server.  However, the price to performance on these little boxes seems very good.

Shuttle

If anybody else has got any good ideas on computer components jump right in and tell us.

Development Deliberation / Mini Game Development
« on: March 20, 2004, 08:08:31 pm »
I was wondering if there were any plans to build a macro language into your client and server model for development of mini-games.  I was thinking, for instance,  hooks into Python or Pearl for mini game development.

Wish list / A better way to caring things.
« on: January 16, 2004, 10:35:14 pm »
There are two factors when dealing with material being carried, size and weight.  Weight is the one that is usually dealt with however in many games I?ve played the size issue is poorly dealt with.  For instance you will have one slot where you can put one ring.  The container will have five slots.  That means the container can handle five rings or five ring mail shirts.

A fanny pack can hold 50 rings with room left over for necklace or two.  But I doubt I could put a large helmets in it.  Even though your trying to make the game, not necessarily in sync with reality, this one point seems to be really out of whack.  Not necessarily in this game but in almost every game I?ve played.

I?ve got an idea though on how to fix it.  Have a size number.  In any container be able to infinitely stack any sane item.  Have all containers have lots of slots, say 40.  However if the total amount of size in a container exceeds the container size it is full.  Nothing more can be put in it.

This means containers are rated by their size.  But there?s also the weight factor.  One critical difference between a backpack and a large sack is with a backpack you can carry more weight.  This would mean all backpacks have a weight reduction attribute.  A finely crafted backpack would be able to handle more weight.  This is also in sync with reality.  Having done a lot of camping and backpacking myself I have carried a 65 lb. backpack however caring 65 lbs. in a sack would be painful.

Then there is the container in a container problem.  There is no reason why you can?t put a sack in a backpack.  So it would kind of go like this.

The sack has items in it for a total weight and size.  The sack itself has a size and weight.  If the backpack can handle both size and weight numbers then you can put the sack in the backpack.  This would help if you had a lot of very small items and need more than 40 slots.  One key factor though you only get the weight reduction bonus on a final container.  So if you have a backpack in a backpack the final one is the one on your actual back.  So putting a backpack in the sack would seem kinda stupid.

Last point is how many slots does a person have on them.  You only have one back so that?s one slot.  You?re not going to carry anything in your hands if you?re swinging a sword however you may have a pouch on your belt, possibly a scabbard.  It might be possible to have everybody start with the sack.  You can put the sack in your one slot.  From then on you would probably be looking to get something better.  It would seem that you?re ripping off the players by giving them only one slot however you can look at it that you?re getting 40 with limited space and some weight restrictions.

General Discussion / What kind of house do you want?
« on: January 03, 2004, 01:10:42 pm »
I often wonder about some of the finer points of why anybody would want to own their own place in a role-playing game.  Sure it?s always nice to have your own pad however the question always remains why?

This is one of those issues that I see either way.  Just having a residence isn?t good enough you actually need a gaming advantage or why would anybody bother.

Here are some reasons why it?s a waste of time having your own residence.
One reason in real life is it?s a place to sleep.  In game time I doubt anybody is going to give any serious consideration to their character sleeping away while they stare at the screen.
Another reason for having your own residence is having a place to cook food.  Although cooking has been stated to be a skill maybe even a trade skill buying an entire house or apartment to learn this seems like quite a lot
it?s a place to put your belongings.  Most people in role-playing games don?t exactly buy couches and other furniture.  They?re more into armor and swords, sometimes poisoning things.

Here are some reasons why you might just what your own residence.
It includes storefront.  A place you can hire an NPC to sell for you.
You?re really serious about your trade skill and need facilities.
You?ve got a lot of belongings and require space to store it.

So I really doubt people just want a house or apartment.  They?re going to need something they can do something in.

So another question is what does property ownership mean.  Do you own a piece of paper like a title?  Do you have a key that allows you into certain rooms?  Can you have the key duplicated so that your friends can enter?

So please go ahead and post the following information.  What you would want in your house and how would you prove it is your house.  This could also include a place of business.

And then how would you sell your house to buy a larger one or different one.  After somebody bought it how would you know that it is no longer your house but somebody else?s.
