Title: Guild quest (contest?)
Post by: drJack on January 28, 2011, 09:23:47 am
A) The plan
Essential and direct.
I think that in a MMORPG the storylines are related not only to NPC but also to PC.
Just to be simple: YOU, players, are part (and maybe protagonist) of Planeshift stories.

So, I’d like to know you a little more. And I’m here to ask some info about your groups.
To be speficic: I want to know about your guilds.

B) The form
I’d like to analyze some features of your guilds. To do so I will use fictional concepts applied to videogames. Here the info I need.
(The * are the mandatory info if you want to gain the prize, see n. 3)

---------------------------------------- This is a line! The begin.
Guild site: [Link, if you have any]
* Guild Mission: [What’s the main goal of the guild, why you created it? Max 2 sentences]
* Guild Style: [Simple, the main activity and manners of your guild. Roguish? Warrior-like, mages, professional gossippers, jack of all trades, crafters, talkers, mercenaries, explorers, mappers? It’s full of possibility. Please add a short description. Max 3 sentences. Be care, that’s the more important info.]
Guild Values (max 3): [Do you have any shared values? If so may I ask you the name of the value ex. Justice and a short (one sentence) explaination ex. bring the guilty to prison (that is different from Justice: help innocent to avoid crimes)]
* Date of creation: [if you don’t remember exactly I’d like to know more or less when.]
Guild main story event (minimum 3 - max 5): [the event has to be described in one, max two sentences, if you remember you may also add the event date]
* Guild location: [This is mandatory only if you have a guild home. I'd like coordinates. A screenshot (little please) can be appreciated too.]
Members: 1) [How they can join - are they selected in any way?] 2) [Hierarchy and roles in the guild with a short description ex. Lieutenant: the one who make cakes at the guild parties!] 3) [Important members (old and young) and why, max 3] 4) [How many members? If you don’t know exactly I’d like to know more or less how many.]
* What you like the most of your guild: [Max 2 sentences]
Guild motto!: [That’s very optional, but if you want to add a motto, please do it. It’s fun.]
---------------------------------------- This is another line! (uh yeah). The end.

How to fill the form: copy the form between the lines, delete the [tag description] and add yours.
Now, since I’m asking you something I’d like to give you something back.

C) The (little) prize
I’m calling it “prize” but it’s too a big word.
I’m going to create one (and only one) quest, related to one (and only one) guild.
I will personally  decide the winner guild based on
1 (most important point) - congruent motivation (so a guild created with a clear goal will be more than a standard guild)
2 - activities (the most active guild, and the one that has the most structured activity)
3 - Important events (the guild that lived more events GM created, and also player created)
4 - Members (the more the better, I will check also the originality of the important characters)
5 (less important point) - Longevity (enduring matters)

The quest will be “related” to the winner guild. It won’t be an official guild quest. This means:
- The quest style will be the same of the guild style. Ex. If will win a Guild of professional gossippers the quest will be about spreading gossips.
- I can add some story element of the guild in the quest. Ex. I can mention something of the guild, such as an important member or event. (but only if we agree, so if you think that’s a bad point just tell me)
- The starting NPC will be near the guild location.

This quest will be open to all:
- Everyone can make it at any time.
- The quest has a story indipendent from the guild, so the quest will remain forever! Also after the eventual closure of the guild.
-> I’m choosing so since the guild can close, but its story will remain, and be a part (little, or maybe big) of Planeshift history.

How? You will see ;).

D) Timeline
This so called “challenge” will finish the 15th of February h: 23:59, current year.
The quest will be written after two or three weeks. (Then maybe it has to be tested, so it can be a little more.)

I think that this “challenge” can be easy and enjoyable, but it’s not really serious: it’s almost unofficial. If you think that it will create major conflict between you players just tell me. I can delete it.

So, here we’re. If anyone is interested I’d like to listen. (Fill the form, but share also your opinion if you’ve something in mind you think I should add.)

Public reply - or private message?
Title: Re: Guild quest (contest?)
Post by: weltall on January 28, 2011, 11:02:29 am
i'd say private

Public is allowed. I like trasparency.
But if you prefer private (since you want to mantain secrecy or you think it's not RP, or you don't want some other player know about something, or, well, for any reason) no problem with it. You may PM me.

Guild Name: The Klyros Junction
Guild site: http://www.rienow.net/KlyrosJunction/
* Guild Mission: We try to be like a community of Klyros around the dome, helping others whenever we can of all races.
* Guild Style: There is no set profession that one member must take part in. We have duelers, crafters, herbalists, alchemists, as well as merchants in many different areas and forms. Every profession must be lawful though in one way or another. And we have experts in just about every profession to help the ones that strive to become great Klyros.
Guild Values (max 3): One value that is uniform throughout the guild, enforced by all members is: help. We try and help others (Not just Klyros) all that we can. This includes justice, as well as pure day-to-day troubles.
* Date of creation: 2008-06-06 07:29:39
Guild main story event: No one event yet the founder, Khwye wanted to make home and shelter for every Klyros as that should be their right, not priviledge.

Poetry Contest (Run and payed for by the KJ.)
* Guild location: No GH yet, but one is being made in Amdeneir.
Members:
1) [How they can join - are they selected in any way?] Klyros often either ask to join the guild after we have helped them. After they ask we interview them and there it is. The interview is moreso to get to know the member.

1 Novice- The rank you get when you enter the guild.
2 Apprentice- After some time in the guild, you shall have decided what profession you want to have.

4 Adept-  As being the first of the ranks of professionals - should have a lot of experience that he uses to supervise the training of the Journeymen.

7 Exemplar- Such an exemplary character in the highest possible rank and serves as an example for future guild members.
8 High Council Member- The rank of High Council Member is honorary. It can be earned by showing the ability of leadership and management or special engagement for the guild.

3) [Important members and why, max 3] (Don't be offeneded if I don't say your name)
1. Leraider- The current leader of the guild. He is almost always around Hydlaa or Amdeneir, helping others all the time possible.
2. Khwye- The founder and previous leader of the guild. He is studying on the lower levels right now so will be back later.
3. Dragonis- An old member of the guild who enforces the younger members and enemies of the guild. He is a great dueler and a High Council of the guild as he's been with us for years, since it's been founded.
4. We have so many members that I haven't mentioned that contribute greatly to the guild!
4) [How many members? 266 currently. One of the largest guilds acctually.

Guild name:
Knowledge Seekers

Guild site:
http://knowledge-seekers.alphasys.nl/ (http://knowledge-seekers.alphasys.nl/)

Guild Mission:
The Knowledge Seekers bring education to the world of Yliakum. In their university they teach science of all fields, from crafting to magic to social topics -- see our Prospectus  (http://knowledge-seekers.alphasys.nl/smf/index.php?action=pages;sa=2) for full range of current subjects.

Guild Style:
We are a lawful neutral, democratic, and mainly pacifist guild; our purpose is to educate the populous. As an organisation we avoid taking part in conflicts and even preferring either side - except for extreme cases i.e. a generic threat to Yliakum. We fulfil the Octarchal Decree of 425 AY by teaching everyone who is willing to learn, from scientific knowledge for understanding the nature we live in, to martial arts for defending our world.

Guild Values:
Educating: to spread knowledge and wisdom. Educated people are more efficient in supporting a healthy society and defending Yliakum against outer and inner threats.
Learning: to gather new knowledge and wisdom, so we may better educate.

Date of creation:
November 13th, 2004

Guild main story event:
•   Founded in 2004 and immediately growing to more than 30 members, a respected competitor to the Explorers, "approved by Kada-El", accepted by notorious detractors like Xordan and Phinehas...
•   Arka Garam took the praesidiorship from Lordbug Dosaki, who started travelling, and partially reformed the Knowledge Seekers (2006-2007), before leaving the Dome after the Dwarven Wars (Drahlian vs. Dwarven Star) at the same time as Einnol Feldorm, her friend and partner
•   Taking part in the contest for the Octarchal Society for Progress (Jan. 2009), earning a contract with Jayose about reviewing newly published literature for the annex of his library

Guild location:
No guild house as yet; currently using a public building bridge with staircase as "office" in the meantime [hydlaa_jayose (121, 7, -169)].
(http://www.ligh.de/PlaneShift/KS-Office_th.jpg) (http://www.ligh.de/PlaneShift/KS-Office.jpg)

Members:
1) Students interested send us a letter of introduction and fill an application form. The deanery will then consult about the applicant and - if agreed - assign a teacher who will mentor the student, who will then have to prove basic and specific knowledge about Yliakum before starting their chosen field of studies.
2) The praesidior {9} (the current figurehead of the university) with input from chancellors {8} (past praesidiors) and deans {7} (each of whom runs a department) run the university. Professors {6} each teach students in their own fields of knowledge with assistance from the scrutators {4}. The proctor {5} liaises between staff and students and is charged with recruiting new members. Initiates {1} (those who wish to learn and have passed initial application become students {2}, once they have chosen a field of study. Cognates {3} carry out research based assignments with guidance from professors.
3) Famous members include Arka Garam, former praesidior (founded "Pel Perrakithor", the language of the Stonebreakers); Tuathanach, current praesidior; Erelenga Karal, head dean
4) At last count we had 33 members.

What you like the most of your guild:
We are a democratic guild, we discuss matters up to an agreement - this trains finding relevant arguments and balanced compromises. Initiate students receive "Inner Guild Quests" as challenges to get to know the game world, to stay entertained, to grow into the guild. Being a guild focused on education is still a rather unique attribute, other teaching guilds disappeared rather soon.

Guild motto:
We come to teach

After that I will take some days to decide.
I will let you know the winner when the quest is ready on Zeroping (or maybe a little before, depends on the time for testing).

Congrats The Way of The Hammer!

I honestly thought it would of been more between Enkidukai and Klyros guilds, because Amdeneir and Dsar Kore don't have any quests yet.

I will see what we can do.
I'd like to make something for everyone, but I can't assure you anything for now.

I wonder which reason gave the edge for this decision...
My judgement is totally personal, based on the values reported on the starting topic.
I also interviewed some GMs and other Devs since it wasn't a simple choice, but the final decision was totally mine.
The other two I wanted to use were DoX and KS.
For DoX I assure thay if I will make other "guild related" quest the next will be for them. I will suggest it or not based on player response for this first one.
For KS I will try to check their works on their forums to repay them, but alas here too, I'm not sure to have enough time.

Shadowheart Legacy was the most awesome guild that nobody ever knew about (except the Yliakum Mercz, who we pwned in a war. They learned that too soon and too late).
We had 100+ members, all who were freakin' awesome. We had so much cash, were about to buy a guildhouse when 0.5 came out and 90% of us quit, including our treasurer who kept all our money and forgot that she still had it when she left.

Oh and btw, the guild died.

We had 100+ members, all who were freakin' awesome. We had so much cash, were about to buy a guildhouse when 0.5 came out and 90% of us quit, including our treasurer who kept all our money and forgot that she still had it when she left.

Oh and btw, the guild died.

My, my that really was a long time ago... You'll find a few of the old guilds from that time have still stuck around, and there's also several new ones that have cropped up and done pretty well :)

Update.
Sorry guys.
I didn't forgot this, alas the quest is still on testing.

Not sure how I missed this thread, but this sounds fascinating. Can't wait to hear more about it.

Ok, the quest is live. I see the NPC is giving it.
The NPC is near the guild location of the winning guild.

I hope it doesn't have too much bugs, I tested myself since our testers are on holyday.

First known bug: The next NPC offers a wrong dialog line (if you see the option not to help anymore when you arrive for the first time, wait for weltall to upload the fix).

First let me say thank you for finishing it. Unfortunately today you can't go past Hamel as he doesn't understand you. Hope the fix will be here soon.

drJack received already several reports. So I assume all we are waiting for is weltall uploading it to the server...

Poor weltall. :flowers: Has no vacation.  :innocent:

I believe the quest was closed since there was a fairly serious money exploit possible. The quest would not properly close and you could keep repeating the final line and keep getting the reward. So until the bug gets fixed and uploaded the quest is closed.

The errant step which caused the biggest problems is fixed and most if not all of the language issues have been addressed as well.  All that's needed now is for that version to be loaded onto the server.  If there are still any premature dialogs we can check.  But the critical fixes have been made.

And yes, weltall doesn't GET to have a vacation!  :P
He must remain chained to the server console.   ;D

once it's all finished, i'd love to hear the player reviews of the quest. Was it something that took the entire guild effort to complete? Did you feel it was appropriately geared towards your guild?

I confirm.
Alas I tested it on the console myself and added some fix.
Then the test server went down and I assumed that all was working.

Alas I added a step in the wrong place.
Sorry for all of that, my fault.

The fix should be ready on the console. I don't know if it is already uploaded yet, but I'd like to check throughly before setting it back to live server.

Me too. And I'd like already to listen to them if there are any.

i don't see how the quest had anything to do with the Way of the Hammer, other than it involving dwarves.

I guess you missed the reference to the founding member of Way of the Hammer in the quest.

I talked with a few members of the hammer. The way of the hammer was mentioned, but that was about it.

Still seems like a lot of information was requested of the guilds that entered just for a mention of the name. Silly me thought maybe part of the guild's past achievements or characters names might have been worked in somewhere. Having named Kada El's after a past player still fits nicely into PS history without having the player still around.

Indeed ... Hamel could well get a slight nostalgic touch, like ... that threatening from the Onyx Dagger crew (remember the undercover quest with Nodramok) wouldn't happen if there were more people as patriotic as the Dwarven Star generals like ... and ...

That was my promise:
Quote
The quest will be “related” to the winner guild. It won’t be an official guild quest. This means:
- The quest style will be the same of the guild style. Ex. If will win a Guild of professional gossippers the quest will be about spreading gossips.
- I can add some story element of the guild in the quest. Ex. I can mention something of the guild, such as an important member or event. (but only if we agree, so if you think that’s a bad point just tell me)
- The starting NPC will be near the guild location.

Here's the report of The Way of The Hammer.

Quote
Guild name: The Way of The Hammer

Guild site: http://inter-link.ath.cx/forum

Guild Mission: To help all dwarves and to teach our ways.  To collect the artefacts of our ancesters, known as items "of the Hammer"

Guild Style: A cooperative (mostly lawful) and proud society  structured in the Keeper, the council, warriors, crafters, merchants, teachers, mages, and elders – consisting of dwarven members from both clans, Stonebreakers and Hammerwielders.

Guild Values: Friendship, Beer, Loyalty to the Guild.

Date of creation: October 2005.

Guild main story event (minimum 3 - max 5):
"... there was a way of life for many of the Dwarven Clans. It was known as 'The Way of the Hammer'."
http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=19612.0
"The dwarfs decided it would be best to reorganize the alliance to suit their new life in the city. A guild was formed..."
The Dwarven wars: http://inter-link.ath.cx/forum/index.php?topic=52.0
The Gugrontid Platinum Frenzy http://inter-link.ath.cx/forum/index.php?topic=54.0

Guild location: Hydlaa upper plaza near Amidison Stronghand -92, 27, 57
       http://inter-link.ath.cx/forum/MGalleryItem.php?id=41

Members: 1) The hammers help dwarves in game,   sometimes they ask to join us after being helped.  We hold a short interview then accept them as pathseekers,  if they are still with us after a week or two, they are promoted to full members.
 2) Pathseeker of the Hammer - A newcomer to the guild, yet to prove themselves and choose a path

Crafter of the Hammer - The Crafters are asked to craft the finest items they can, be it weapons, armour, food or other goods.

Hunter of the Hammer - A quester and hunter of great items. They are asked to find and collect all various items that the guild would regard as treasure.

Mage of the Hammer - The Mage is asked to protect the Way with their magic.

Guard of the Hammer - The Guard is asked to protect the guild in all ways. They are first into battle in times of war.

Teacher of the Hammer - Teachers are responsible for guiding all pathseekers in learning the ways.

Elder of the Hammer - This is a position given to those whom the guild wish to recognize for their contribution to the guilds history. Only retired or semi retired dwarfs will hold this position.

Council of the Hammer - Council members are trusted members who the keeper can rely on to help make decisions. A Council member is 2nd in command therefore only well respected and active members will be chosen by the Keeper.

Keeper of the Hammer - The leader of our guild, his task is to protect the Way and his fellow dwarves.  Holder of the ceremonial hammer that represents dwarven unity
.
3) Cilay Mecur: Keeper of the Hammer for many years (now retired), rebuilt the guild from almost nothing, well respected amongst other guild leaders in Yliakum
Rheos:  Council of the Hammer. Second in command of the Hammers and well known in Yliakum,  a good teacher and always willing to lend a hand to others.
Evaraj: Teacher of the Hammer.  Long time guild member, has guided many hammers in the ways. Curator of the ancient artifacts of the hammer

4) We currently have 71 members.

* What you like the most of your guild: The friendship we have built with each other. The way our guild can work as a team when needed.

Guild motto!: Drink ale and have fun!

Now I insert the elements I implemented.
FIRSTLY AND MAINLY
- The quest style will be the same of the guild style. Ex. If will win a Guild of professional gossippers the quest will be about spreading gossips.
Quote
Guild Mission: To help all dwarves and to teach our ways.
- Quest is for about dwarves.
Quote
Friendship, Beer, Loyalty to the Guild.
- Quest is about beer. Quest is about loyalty (Narwin struggle).

Quote
Crafter of the Hammer - The Crafters are asked to craft the finest items they can, be it weapons, armour, food or other goods.
- Quest is about weapons and armors (they need mineral to creat weapons)
- Quest is about food (they need food to sustain dwarves)

Quote
Elder of the Hammer - This is a position given to those whom the guild wish to recognize for their contribution to the guilds history. Only retired or semi retired dwarfs will hold this position.
- Quest is about respecting will of the elders (minor one, since is more the will of the community, but currently I didn't find a better way to create using the NPC we had near the location)

Quote
Hunter of the Hammer - A quester and hunter of great items. They are asked to find and collect all various items that the guild would regard as treasure.
AND
Quote
To collect the artefacts of our ancesters, known as items "of the Hammer"
- Quest is about collecting artifacts. That's the main item, since this is the element that differentiate more the guild from the others.

Secondly.
- I can add some story element of the guild in the quest. Ex. I can mention something of the guild, such as an important member or event. (but only if we agree, so if you think that’s a bad point just tell me)
This was the minor one. I didn't even know for sure if palyers agreed on this.
But I added the element:
Quote
Cilay Mecur: Keeper of the Hammer for many years (now retired), rebuilt the guild from almost nothing, well respected amongst other guild leaders in Yliakum

And lastly.
Promise:
- The starting NPC will be near the guild location.
Location:
Quote
Guild location: Hydlaa upper plaza near Amidison Stronghand -92, 27, 57

I thought I implemented almost all the things inserted in their topic.
As weltall already said I didn't want to create a quest formally tied to a guild, I also told that.

Quote
- The quest has a story indipendent from the guild, so the quest will remain forever! Also after the eventual closure of the guild.
-> I’m choosing so since the guild can close, but its story will remain, and be a part (little, or maybe big) of Planeshift history.

I hope this explain the choices made in the creation of this quest.

Hi drJack,  I can see from your posts that you put a lot of thinking into the quest and did as you promised with the guild's information. No one can fault you for that and I applaud your efforts to include actual player guilds into the game giving them some deserved recognition.

My previous comment above was based more from the other posters than from the actual quest itself. I evidently made a wrong choice in attempting the quest and had it ended before I got very far with it. When Narwin had no further information to say to me, I thought there was no farther I could go and so chose Hamel's option to give up. Still, from those who did complete the quest fully, unless they were to know all of these things about the guild, it's mission, etc., etc., there's really no way to notice a lot of the relationships, other than the obvious mention of names.
