Potion of polymorph
« on: April 24, 2014, 12:46:37 pm »
I'd like to put this here for discussion, since polymorph is supported via spell mechanics, and a potion with a similar effect cannot be off setting, as we had this story element in some event a while ago.
To prevent abuse for progression of weak characters, the potion should transform the user into a lowest rank creature, e.g. a yulbar or kikiri. I see a lot of potential for dueling fun with characters that would otherwise have very different stats and skills.
Thoughts?

Confess, you just want to eavesdrop in a disguise.

Or actually make a Groffel Messenger Service.

I love this idea. I'd pour it into people's drinks, and it would be incredible.

But make sure they paid before sipping... It may be hard to take money from the lack of pockets on animals.

Thanks for the feedback.

That should actually work well with existing spells. The difference to a potion is evident when you want to give an unexperienced player the option to morph: Lending a relatively rare glyph is risky, and a beginner could not even use it. Potions are created to drink and have fun.

If you are lucky, you get only groffel wings. If you are unlucky, you get only groffel toes... ;)

A potion would technically be possible, but you wouldn't be able to use it to do as you plan at the moment. I should point out that engine wise the spells give [de]buffs to players but these result in +/- the stats of the caster so any skill imbalance will remain. Players will also fight with any weapon they chose to hold not with 'claws' as you might expect if they became an ublernaut. When i asked about being forced to fight with claws not equipped swords I was told there was no way the current code could support it, maybe some day.

Ah, that's a valuable bit of information. I have been told that polymorph spells replace stats and skills instead of buffing them, but I could not verify or get a second opinion. So thanks for this important clue.

Like Venalan said there was no way to force the usage of just claws, however to enforce/encourage the use of melee attacks over exploiting the stats buff to use weapons, most of the fighting skills except melee are reduced to 0 by the spell while melee is buffed.
