Title: Mishka's 3D learning thread
Post by: MishkaL1138 on May 03, 2016, 07:11:12 pm
This is not to teach you stuff! It's to show what I'm learning. For example, just now I finished...

A CROSSBOW!

Some more pics (just 2 and one that you've seen already ^ over there) (http://imgur.com/a/bkZV9)

Tips? Thoughts? Donations? *rattles a can with coins*

/me tips Mishka for a few more candles to have the scene lit.

But it looks quite credible already.

I did another thing: a hatchet! (http://imgur.com/a/gtJ0s)

I know PlaneShift does not need new models for preexisting items, but I like making them and I learn a lot out of it. Maybe the next item I'll do is something that's using a placeholder at the moment.

I've told you on IRC, and I gladly say it again: This looks good!  :)

Hey looks good. Always good to see folk trying 3d modelling. One thing for textures is make them look less clean. Try adding dirt, grime , scratches, dents etc. I found out that only after doing some things and then being told that they could look better

The metal already looks well used; just the handle was freshly replaced. ;)

A friend suggested blood on the blade, lol. But you can do a lot of stuff with the Burn tool in Photoshop. I'm starting to look into higher detail (and polycount) modeling, trying to double the poly count.

Wow.!! Looks great.!!
Love to see you ended up with a nice looking model.
Can't wait till I see some of your models in-game.   :P

With a few purry licks,

Jemima

Mishka recently gave me the files for the crossbow which I hope to get added to PlaneShift as soon as possible.

/me dusts the thread off after the last visitors trudged in uninvited

Thought I'd try my handpaw at this again, so here's part of a small project I'm working on:

I like this piece because it's got that Resident Evil 1 texture look, doesn't it? Kind of like something you'd find in a manor after being forgotten for 100 years.

The texture looks good, does it have a normal map or is the texture just that detailed?

It's just that detailed. I don't know how to do normal maps. But if you'd like to try your paw hand at making another texture with a normal map, feel free to give me your email so I can send you the model.

I have to find a way to do that first. I think my Maya is too old to make normal maps in it and the only program I learned to make them in is Mudbox which I don't have. :/

Good News! You can subscribe to Mudbox for only $10 per month.  \\o//

Are you sure there isn't a students' license somewhere?

30 day free trial:

Student:

Not sure what you need to do to get the student version, but give it a whack ...

Usually you need an active .edu email to sign up but mine is long gone.

Hmm... I see that for a while, it was possible to get one by applying online for canadacollege or californiacollege, but these tricks no longer work. (Canadacollege might still work, but there's a $50 application fee.) I don't think it's really worth all this hassle for a trial account. If a person really wanted to beat the system, they would probably do something else like try to download a list of licenses or something or look for a "patch" that fixes this requirement.  Not sure if Autodesk products "phone home" or not. I think Autocad and Revit do each time you log on. If that's so, then their other products probably do too. Better to just pay the fee or learn to use a freeware product.

Well, actually, my AutoDesk/CAD license is linked to a @gmail account. Don't knock it 'til you try it. I'm sure you could get something.

When all else fails, go blender :P

Student certificate is as good, for example for github student so its not always necessary.

Since this is my learning thread, I'll ask:

Does CrystalSpace/PlaneShift handle well smoothed meshes, or does it have to be all blocky?

Cheers.

I imagine it depends on how you do it. If you smooth it in a way that creates more polys you will need to watch your poly count.

Crystal Space can't handle as many tris as modern engines.

Is it like this because you are holding it in the right hand and it is a bit oversized?
I thought mishka made a crossbow not a portable ballista.  ;D

Edit comment: Thank you Aeghiss i wrote it from the phone so i didn't double checked it :P

*Aeghiss whispers : "Ballista Ani, Ballista !"

Well, that's a nice thing anyway. Even if having a temporary scale problem, it still announces crossbows to be available rather quickly. :D

I've been learning how to added art into the client using Mishka's crossbow as my tool. We have worked together and now have a final model I'm in the process of trying to get into PS so this can be in the next update.
