Title: Crash on Login
Post by: trimoon on April 06, 2019, 07:23:17 am
I have been trying to get this beast to work for 2 days and the results stay same: Crash on login !

I am using Kubuntu 18.10, and have tried installiing both as regular user and sudo.
The installs go fine, i even created 2 chars, but i am unable to enter the game.
I have posyed the error logs on your facebook page, but am unable to post here because i have uninstalled it due to frustration of creating an account to post this on your forum here !
(What a freaking weird question to ask about the color of the sun inside a game the player is NOT able to see yet?)

*edit*
Long story short for the lazy devs: It can't find needed files, even though the repair function says all is ok...

*edit 2*
Your forum software uses IP addresses as links and redirects not your DNS name...

This will be my last post here because of the 5 captcha answers needed for a simple post.

Since no one responded yet I'll give it a shot for if you're still here or someone else seeing this.

It complaining about not being able to find things isn't necessarily the problem, I know it complains about a lot of things which it simply deals with. You might try to set the settings lower/higher and disabling/enabling options since that is the most common solution for if you can make a character but crash when entering the world.

I wouldn't call the devs lazy but the game is certainly a mess as it is.

but yeah the captcha questions are annoying even if they are somewhat effective. Especially the Azure sun since it's not actually Azure in game either, it's just called that, which a new player wouldn't know.. I certainly had to spent some time finding it out.

Was actually hoping someone would post here the error logs trimoon says they posted on the (game's?) Facebook page, otherwise there is scant to go on.

I too get lots of errors (of the stype "Could not open image:"... mostly but also other errors) without any issues. I would agree with netforce10 here, and suggest you run pslaunch and then tune the graphics settings: Click on the "SETTINGS" button at the bottom center, then choose "Medium" from the "Graphics Quality:" drop-down, then "OK". I have heard people crashing with too low settings, so I guess medium is the way to go, you can fine-tune later, after you manage logging into the game.

Yes there is some issue with the DNS entry for the forum which hasn't been fixed for a long time now. But it still works well enough. Have a look at this post from someone having simillar issues as your own: http://207.244.96.64/PlaneShift/smf/index.php?topic=43498.0 (http://207.244.96.64/PlaneShift/smf/index.php?topic=43498.0), or this one: http://207.244.96.64/PlaneShift/smf/index.php?topic=43423.0 (http://207.244.96.64/PlaneShift/smf/index.php?topic=43423.0) which is the same issue, solved by toggling a single graphics setting. Also the entire "http://207.244.96.64/PlaneShift/smf/index.php?board=17.0 (http://Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game)" board could contain other threads you might find helpful.

Also make sure you have OpenAL installed and update your graphic card drivers. Note that I install as a normal user and I suggest you opt to do the same, otherwise you will need to run the game as root to be able to get updates (not suggested.) Just install in your home folder and run as a normal user instead.

If you are still around, I hope you can find a solution to the problems you are facing soon and we can see you in game.

having had a quick look at my terminal log it seems I share most if not all of those messages(before even logging in interestingly enough). Since it generally works for me(currently the server is acting up) I would suggest changing your graphic settings in the launcher and see if any of the options make a difference.

Try toggling VBO.

Contents of that errorlog:

I am also seeing the same sort of errors as the ones posted, I can find nothing in that error log suggesting an issue that is not common. I would try out Emaline's suggestion, it is what solved the same issue for another player as reported in one of the posts I linked to in my reply above:
or this one: http://207.244.96.64/PlaneShift/smf/index.php?topic=43423.0 (http://207.244.96.64/PlaneShift/smf/index.php?topic=43423.0) which is the same issue, solved by toggling a single graphics setting.

In general tweaking graphics settings should get you in the game. For VBO, click on "SETTINGS", then select "GRAPHICS" on the next screen, and you will find all graphics settings you can customize. Make sure the checkbox "Enable VBO (may cause crashes with ATI cards)" is enabled. Press "OK" to save your changes. I must say I also have VBO enabled, hopefully that works for you as well.

Well from my understanding it crashes people either way. Nvidia is the graphics card it interacts with the most.  Don't simply just turn it off. If it's already off, try enabling it. I'm not at all technical and no idea what VBO does I've only learned it causes the majority of crashes so toggle it is my best and only advice then I'm out. There are several here whom have even commented where this stuff is down their alley. Sorry if it takes us a while to respond, we are a smaller community and don't always check the forums. And the guy that heads up the facebook has been swamped in real life doing very important stuff. I would suggest right now for poking people on discord. https://discord.gg/49n2ySW
