General Discussion / Q&A: Post Your Questions! (June)
« on: June 05, 2007, 06:56:26 pm »
Answers to previous questions can be found in this thread

Introduction
Three cheers for the return of our Q&A!

All of PlaneShift players are constantly bursting with questions for the development team, and ever-hungry for those answers. Because it's often impossible for the team to browse through the forum to find good inquiries they can provide comments on, we're holding monthly Q&A sessions where players can ask questions about the game, and on the first of each month a thread full of answers will be posted in the Announcement section. (The next "Questions" thread will also have a link to previous answers.)

Now keep in mind that we have some rules for you to follow when you are posting your questions, so make sure to ask something that you not only cannot find an answer to anywhere else, but are willing to wait a month/some weeks for. This may mean no posting questions about a bug that happened yesterday that you already know will be taken care of tomorrow. Any questions that break the rules will be deleted.

The "Questions" threads will close a week or so before the end of the month so that the dev team can finalize their answers and really take the time to write informative replies, without more questions coming in. If you're late in posting your question, just sit tight until the next "Questions" thread will be opened.

Let's try to keep this thread to Q&As only, so no discussions. This will keep the thread easy to look through for the final selection. And remember that you can ask questions about code, the server, art, etc. - not only about the world. We're hoping all parties will have a lot of fun participating!

This thread will close on the 24th of June for the final selection. Get posting!

The Hydlaa Plaza / Happy Birthday Nurahk!
« on: May 29, 2007, 11:53:51 am »
Happy Birthday!

One year older, one year wiser. Right? ;) Wishing you all the best, cutie - regardless of you saying "I already have it." Stop being sick (it's a real detriment to your health), keep smiling (it's one step closer to laughing), and may you always go to sleep and wake happy. Cheers, Nurahk!

Fan Art / Contributor Guide - Suggestions!
« on: May 06, 2007, 09:08:07 pm »
I brought this up on IRC just a while ago, but the atmosphere there is rather confusing to keep track of something like this for too long :) So I turn to mah babeh - the forums.

I'm working on a "Contributor Guide to PlaneShift Art," a PDF booklet that is meant to be a much more thorough and updated version of our "Guide to 2D/3D Contribution" sticky. It will include things like naming conventions, keeping up a good organization and workflow, rules and guidelines (texture sizes, poly counts), and offer tips on subjects ranging from concept art to animations.

What I need from you before this thing is finished, are suggestions on what you would like to see addressed as interested contributors or prospects. This guide is not a tutorial - you're not going to be taught how to model, how to texture, etc. Hundreds of tutorials on these subjects exist online, and it would be impossible for me to jam them into one PDF (although I will provide many links to the very best of them). I'm talking more about PlaneShift or CrystalSpace specific questions. How to export, what the polycount limits are (both of which will be addressed), and similar. To make sure this thing will really be helpful for you guys, I need to know what documentation would make your lives easier. I've had to learn everything either on my own, or by bugging other people directly about the specifics - and it's been a tiring and grueling task I don't want others to have to go through. So what is missing for you? What information don't you have that impedes your ability to make your own PlaneShift-ready art?

Throw words at me, I eagerly await them.

Guilds Forum / Guild Spotlight: Discussion Thread
« on: March 11, 2007, 02:50:42 pm »
As always we here at the PlaneShift realize that a game is nothing without its community! We are lucky to have such great people surrounding this game already, so we are going to be holding bi-weekly Guild Spotlights to let newcomers know what guilds are out there.

Getting the spotlight is done via voting, split into two one-week sessions. First, send a private message:

  • to the user “guildspotlightâ€
  • with your nomination
  • and your own character name

When the week is up, the nominations for each guild will be made into a poll and you can then vote for all the possible choices. You cannot nominate your own guild, and a guild cannot be chosen twice in the same year – there is a very large number of many good organizations and they should all be given the chance.

When a guild gets the spotlight, the leader will get an in-depth interview, giving you the chance to learn about the guild’s path to success, their structure and management model, inspirations, and their failures and struggles. There are both in-character and out-of-character components: in-character because above all we need to get a feel for the guild from an inside source, and out-of-character because at the end, we are all players with the same goal – to have fun!

The spotlight thread will be stickied for two weeks in this forum section, and given a permanent page on hydlaa.com, so consider it some very good publicity if you are chosen! ;)

Also feel free to use this thread for discussion of the idea :)

General Discussion / Q&A: Post Your Questions! (October+November)
« on: October 17, 2006, 07:52:50 pm »
Answers to previous questions can be found in this thread.

Hey guys! I'm really sorry we are so behind this month with the Q&A. For those who haven't heard, there was a problem with our internal mailing list and the questions didn't go through for a really long time, so we weren't able to get most of the answers until recently. This month's Q&A will be for October and November both (it will close around this time next month) and we're going to be back on schedule in December. Apologies once more!

General Discussion / Looking to update guide's Crafting section
« on: August 10, 2006, 10:17:18 pm »
The Crafting section within my "Getting Started In-Game" guide is rather outdated, as there is so much more to do now. Since I'm not entirely in the loop on the various crafting processes, can anyone volunteer to rewrite that section? You'll be credited, just as Zhai was when she wrote the text for the "Asking For Help" portion.

Put as much information as you'd like - until the feeling that you're definitely giving something away. So if a certain sentence feels like a spoiler, PM it to me first to just double-check.

I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks!

*edit* TomT dug up a really good guide that deserved its own sticky, so there is no longer a need for further how-to's. Thanks to everyone who volunteered information, still!

In-Game Roleplay Events / Scavenger Hunt
« on: August 10, 2006, 04:30:29 pm »
All you hunters, trackers, and foragers with nothing to do - listen up!
A Scavenger Hunt will be held in one week (time up for debate)
With the organization of several separate teams
And their pursual of a list of items, which will given at the beginning of the event.

There will be four different teams with 10 players in each[/color] - and the search for team leaders starts right now! Nominations will be taken here as well as through PMs.

The teams will first gather by the Eagle Head at the Bronze Doors fortress, where they will then be told what items they need to hunt for. (So be sure to have a pen and a piece of paper ready!) All items needed can be easily attained, and do not require hidden side-quests. The first team to return to the Eagle Head with all the items (there will be 30) wins, and each member will receive a reward!

To make this absolutely fair, all participants will have their inventories checked to make sure that no team will already have everything in their hands. (And we do have a way of checking!) Exceptions will be made only for coin, glyphs, and weapons already in the participants' hands.

If you need a temporary storage solution, please arrive an hour earlier at the named location to have your excess items checked in - you will be given a number to remember, so that we can later easily match stored item-piles with players. Don't worry, your items will be in an inaccessible location to everyone, until they are handed back to you at the end of the event.

Since the four teams can only be comprised of 10 members, 40 participants overall will be accepted. This number may be adjusted if enthusiasm of the event becomes overwhelming

So either post your team leader nominations here, or apply as a participant yourself! Once we have the leaders established, you can either choose the leader you would like to be under or let us put you into random group.

The one thing that we need to discuss further is the time for the event. What works for the majority? Weekend or weekday, and what time period of the day, GMT?

Hope everyone has fun!

Holy crap the thread has grown quickly :} Unfortunately I needed sleep and couldn't keep up, and I have more work to do for our update. I guess Kary just disappeared into the landscape when she went scouting ;)
