PvP,PK and Thieving / Outcasting and PKing?
« on: July 03, 2003, 05:27:30 pm »
The old Star Wars Galaxies idea?
When you pked someone that person could either put a bounty on your head or outcast you. When you are outcasted you turn off the abillity to PK and you need to ask for forgiveness.

Would this be a good way of putting in Pvp?

Actuall i think there are a number of \'galaxies ways of putting in Pvp

Guild wars (obvious best way)
Duelling (safe Pvping to sort out squabbels)
Faction wars (Meaningful faction wars, not like Ultima Online more like SWG)
Outcasting with bounties
Player cities where your sins can be forgiven (player cities that are effectivly very small Free for all zones but can be modorated by the mayor.

(\'Galaxies had it so that when you killed someone you became outcasted. You couldn\'t kill anyone else unless you got forgiveness, However a mayor could forgive you for his city. So as long as you were in his city you coul kill. This means moderated Free for alls).

Finally and most rubbish idea. Zones of pvp and safe zones.

What do you think?

Do you think a game like this (Open source and free)
Ever needs to be released?

Can\'t it just always be in an open beta stage where you won\'t have a character wipe?

Games like CS really started to suck after they released it. Isn\'t making money the only reason for having an actual release?

Unreal tournament runs horribly in Windowed.
But Star wars galaxies has a borderless window option (very useful for dual monitors), I don\'t think borderless window makes much difference on fps and certainly not lag.

General Discussion / My thoughts on the game, as a chatroom.
« on: July 03, 2003, 05:05:24 pm »
At the moment most other parts of the game arn\'t in so as a chatroom (and possible MMO) here is what i think.

The graphics are nice! Whilst there are definitly better engines out there (the skies in Dragon Empires look amazing) this one is really nice i think. It\'s like the difference between UT and UT2003. UT2003 might be technically better then UT but UT just looked really nice.

That\'s what i think about Planeshift. The game looks nice.

Buggyness?
As there arn\'t many features it is hard to tell but the stability in Planeshift feels good. Whilst running UO (especially on third party servers) Everything feels like it is going to crash all around you :( So the feel of the game was nice.

Ease of use and the GUI?
This i think should be improved even as a chatroom. (though this could all be because I\'m a newbie :( ) The mouselook key being here ># Is not nice It\'s in the middle of the keyboard, far away from everything. So being able to map keys would be a really nice feature.

Really I think the whole GUI was not that amazing. Another thing is having to click on the chat thing before you can talk. There should be a key that exits out of chatting and into it. Really I think SWG have basically Aced the GUI. Having the options of FPS, EQ and SWG is good. And I much prefer UO and SWQ\'s way of just typing and the text goes into the box. When you are running around and you meet someone, you have to stop, get it off mouse look, click on the tiny box and then start typing. In SWG and UO you just type.

Other features of other games like SWG and Neverwinter Nights are all good. like Radial menus, being able to highlight things, targeting (which is in), Ctrl and a key getting you to a menu screen, Comic book Chat boxes appearing by the character so you don\'t get a scary mute avatar whilst talking to someone. All of SWG and NWN is good.

Also I think speaking to npcs is easier using the swg and nwn way of clicking sentences rather then having lots of I don\'t understand what you are saying. I don\'t know how roleplayers feel about that.

Also the character creation did not have much, but that is obviously because it is pre alpha.

Summary of what i thought:
Grpahics are nice, The world and city looks nice and the feel of the game is excellent, even when you fall through the floor the game doesn\'t seem to crash. However the graphical user interface needs work and SWG is the way forward i think.

(Sorry It\'s late at night. Forming sentences hard is :S)

Yeah I was so upset when they fisslzed out UO2.

I don\'t think anything could be as good as that. I just really love the Ultima world. However this can still be cool.

My computer\'s specs are alot worse when that
I get very little lag (though lag doesn\'t habe much to do with the computer i think)

The fps doesn\'t seem that bad. It jerks abit in the city square and is perfect when in the caves and passages. That could just because I am so used to laggy games though :(

I don\'t think you are really here to complain about the game. I really think you just want to show off you PC :P

I really liked the idea behind the Star Wars Galaxies combat system. It is semi turned based and definitly not switch. But there are lots of abilities and tactics you can use. (Or could they have sort of ruined it now). Things like going prone, or going for a leg shot and getting rid of the action shot.

I don\'t think RPGs should really have twitch, one I doubt a freebie server will be as good as the mega servers they must have at Origin and sony (and there is still plenty of server side lag). And secondly, you stop playing a character in the world if you add twitch. It becomes you in the world (like in CS).

Having LOADS of abilities and tactics I think could be still very fun.
