My only question is (and I know it's spoiler-ish...so it's more of a rhetorical question) will it require a trip to the winch?

Yes. We're working to fix the alternative ways into the winch and potentially add more, there's no way around the fact that winch access (and what's beyond) will be a big part of the game.

I am however open to suggestions on how to better explain what needs to be done to enter winch in game.

Ok so for those frustrated with winch access via the thief way: if you stalled in the process petition a gm to reset you, the problem is fixed(tm).

I'd like to see some really high resolution shots with nice background (meaning areas with better textures) to share on other sites than this one.

Haha, nice one Shangshi.     I should pull out my screenies from ezpc when I had a rivnak.  But that's kinda cheating.

@Xillix: It's ok, for me it wasn't a complaint as much as wishful thinking.  My issues with winch access stem from the objectives I have and how they come together...
...been looking to get a wall glyph for some time...need winch access for that...need to do all those BD quests to get the needed quest...and was hoping for a mount to make those long trips...mmm...not so grueling...which in turn seems I need winch access for.      Oh well, guess Mordaan needs to get in shape, drop some weight (so to speak), and prepare for an awful lot of running to get his rivnak.  It's ok...it will only make him appreciate both his wall glyph and rivnak all the more.
