Tying a necktie
« on: May 02, 2008, 01:01:34 pm »
I've never been the type of guy who wears a tuxedo, but I slowly get comfortable with that (it's a must for my verbal final examination and for the prom).

I have absolutely no idea how to tie a necktie, tried it a few times with the four in hand knot, but ended with a asymmetric thin and ugly knot, tho I'd like a comfortable and thick knot. Thus I find the (double) windsor knot quite cool. Unfortunately I don't really get the "howtos" and am unable to tie it...

HELP!!! ;)
So why do I love when I still feel pain?
When does it end, when is my work done?
Why do I fight and why do I feel that
I carry a sword, that I carry a sword through a battlefield?

Thanks dajoji, altho the first two are bow-ties (we call them "flies"), the third one is really helpful, thank you very much

I didn't watch those all but I though the first related video for the third one was hilarious.

Hehe, I think I got it, the tie knot looks good, yet a little too thin and the tie in general hangs too short, guess I gotta train that for a while to make a perfect knot.

Anyone know another tie knot which is thick and wide and easy to make? ;)

For a few years I've been tying the half-windsor exclusively.  It's pretty easy and I like the results.

I like the windsor better than the half-windsor because it looks more symmetrical. Oh, and Cebot, you said "tuxedo", hence the bow tie assumption ;)

well, am not that good with the words for such clothes, I thought it's "suit" in british english and "tuxedo" in american english - and since i prefer american english i chose tuxedo ;)

Easy enough misunderstanding, but as Dajoji suggests a Tuxedo is actually a special kind of suit.  Tuxedo is to suit as Ferrari is to car.  And a Tuxedo is usually or always worn with a bow tie.

A tuxedo can be worn with a necktie.  I had to wear a blazer last week, and come to think of it, the only difference between a tuxedo jacket and a blazer is that a tuxedo is longer along the back and the lapels are shinier.

With lots of practice I think am now able to do a windsor knot  \\o//
going to try some other knots as well (the merowinder knot looks cool too)

Which knots do you guys prefer?

EDIT: the merowinger knot: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bild:Necktie_Merovingian_knot.jpg
(the link to the direct image is too large)

EDIT2: Raa, got any pictures and/or a step by step howto for such a knot? :)

I like a succession of square knots. But most men don't do that...  >:(
