this is a coppy of what i wrote in another thread. since it was a bit off the topic of what the thread began as, i thought i should
repost it in a new thread.

i just want to point oput that i cant stand any PKing what so ever. it leads to griefers very fast. sooner or later some one will find
an easy target and then make that person\'s life misserable. constantly killing them over and over and taking their items. there is
no way to regulate PKing. people find their way around it. also whats to stop groups of people from jumping a single person. sure
a lvl 50 cant attack a lvl 5 but 5 lvl 5s can jump a single lvl 5. sure thats life but this is just a game. people play to have fun. not to
                         be griefed over and over.

i love the duel system and the arena system but all out anyone can kill anyone at any time, just stinks. how would a new person
get anywhere in this game. they dont know anyone yet and want to explore a bit then all of a suddon a PKer comes along seeing
an easy target. boom the new player is dead and discoraged(sp) and ends up quiting.

look how succesfull EQ has been. if it wasnt for their horrid customer suport, they would be still on top of the MMORPGS. they
had a server for PKers, team PKers, deity PKers and so on. those were the most unpopulated servers in the game. the most
popular were the ones non PK.

all i have to say is weather a game is PK or not determins if ill play it or not. if i cant go out and explore the lands without having
to worry about both NPCs and PKers then i dont find much interest in it. from all the games i have played, PKing only ment one
thing...grief. for some reason there are people out there that cant find fun in a game unless they are causeing another player
harm. killing them out of the blue then taking their gear. that is harm. its bad enough that mobs will attack you for no reason
other than to kill you but then to have PKers after you just so they can take your things.....thats just too much.

people then want to say \"well then its not very realistic if there isnt a PK system\". well is it realistic to be killed then respawn
somewhere else? is it realistic to be a huminoid rock person that can use magic? is it realistic to be doing anything in a virtual
world. no its not realistic. thats why people play RPGs. to get away from what is realistic.

ok so i think ill end this here with a question to the crew making this game. with the talks of duels and arenas, i was under the
impression that PKing wasnt going to happen unless agreed apon by the two in the fight, or those that enter the arena. now from
what has been said in the PK xp thread, i am wondering. is there a chance that any player at anytime, away from a town, can
attack any other player, within their lvl, and kill them? if so then i would have to rethink this game and probly wouldnt play it.
though it looks great and sounds great, PKing is one thing i have found in many games that just completely trashes it and
makes it another Quake. so is there PKing outside of duels and the arena areas?

lame carebear game? so is that why ever quest has gotten best game of the year a couple years in a row, cause it was lame?
look at other games where PKing was part of the game. AO for example, went to the crapper in a short amount of time due to the
rampant PKing. its funy when i see people saying that PKing has to be a part of the game or no one will play it. then go look at
the online status of non PKing vs PKing games and the non PKing games have three to four times the population. look at Ever
Quest for example once again. three or more PKing servers with only about 6 to 7 houndrred players on any of them at peak
time. then go to the near 20+ non PK servers and see 15k+ people on each of them. PKers may be the loudest voice you hear in
game making but its the non PKers that make up the majority.

oops my numbers were off badly on the non PK servers. it was 1500 to 2500 on the nonPK servers at peak time. not combined
mind you but each of them had 15 to 25 hundred players while the 3 or 4 PK servers only had 4 to 7 hundred each.

harder to pk someone than in other games, meaning you have a chance and pking isn\'t as lucrative as in other games...

well crap. i would like to have pk cuz it is more realistic as far as it being a MU game. BUT I would say they should have certain
areas where u cant pk. like a forbidden forest or a pirate sea or some islands that have only pk on them.
                         just some thoughts.

Some areas will be protected by guards... and i think my suggestion about travelling guards and making it harder to take down a
person through pking would mean it would be discouraged...

That is just going into RuneScape right there.

I hate it where you hafta walk half the world to get to this \"zone\" so you can kill this one person who ends up runnning away.

I say there should be guards in towns, NPC guards. After you click or whatever to fight the guard automatically comes in
between the two fighters and say \"Stop this immediatly or you shall go to prison!\" That way there is no fighting in towns. But
there is fighting away from towns because guards are not there.

                         ...or not.

                         players begin.

What happens when you die in PS?

Is it something lame like RS? It needs to be cool like it has a small movie of you being sucked into blackness then awakening in

i would hope it was like in other games. you have bind spots where you gain an afinity for the area so when killed you return to
that area. that way, unlike in RS, you can chose where you respawn after death so you dont have to travelk the entire world to
get back to where you once were.

the question im more concerned with is the death penalty. what will that amount to? will you keep your item after death or loose
them? will you keep the items but have to return to where you died to get them back from your corpse? what about xp? upon
death can you loose some of your xp? if you had just gained a lvl and got killed imedietly after, do you then loose that lvl from the
loss of xp? also what about a new skill you get after you lvl, if you are then killed and loose that lvl do you then now loose that
                         skill?

sure death penalties are needed or there would be no fear in dieing but to make them too exteam could hurt in the long run.
example is EQ. there for a while it was the only game of it\'s kind and the only one safe from the Quake types that like to PK. one
of the largest problems they had was their death penalty. you could work months to get a bit of xp to gain a lvl then in one death
you would be set back a week or two. also melee chars had it even worse. they had no magic where as casters had magic so
they could bind themselves anywhere. so when a melee died they were sent to a town. when a caster died, they returned to the
mouth of the dungion where they bound themselves. this caused the melee to run long distances with no armor or weapon to get
back so they could loot their corpse yet the casters still ha their magic to protect them.

well that went way off the path there but was ment to point out that death penalties need not to be massive and have to be equal
                         to all classes.

One very annoying thing in free MMOGes is that there are always many players with multiple accounts. There\'s almost no way to
prevent this. Many things have been tried, from IP logging to cookie scanning, although with very feeble results.
With a relatively low amount of players and a fantastic gameplay in ps, it wouldn\'t be fair to allow players to have multiple
accounts I think. Something you might try is integrating a software tag like in cs (not crystal space, but counter-strike).

I\"ll tell you what\'s wrong with multipe accounts in PS:

If there will be 1000 places in game, and this is the ONLY FREE MMORPG online, don\'t you think there\'ll be thousands players
that want to play? Maybe you can subscribe 3000 players, for not all players will be online at the same time. That\'s still nothing
compared with games like PA though, in which more than 350.000 players were playing, and multi-ing was still disencouraged.
(in runescape you ARE allowed to have multiple accounts though, but that\'s because their motto is: the more players subscibed,
the more cash we get from sponsors. They don\'t have to care about server space or bandwith, for it\'s graphicly siple, and
characters take up almost no space at all.)

It wouldn\'t be fair to let one player have more than 1 character whilest other can\'t subscribe because the server capacity at limit.
you can\'t play with more than one at the same time after all.

Thekkur wouldn\'t it be ok if once someone created an account, they got it least 3 character slots?

But they could only delete a character AFTER 30 days. So lets say I create a dwarf only after 30 days could I delete him and
use his character slot. But I would still have 2 other slots, besides the one I couldn\'t delete till after a month.

If 3 characters are possible on 1 account it will give Planeshift more depth and make it more fun. But if It would take a lot of
memory or time to do, I say make it 1 character per account.

that\'s a good idea Buechler. I\'ve seen that in other MMORPG\'s so I guess that\'s not too much of a problem. It alows you to play
with more than one different race/class(I know ps doesn\'t contain classes, but I dunno how to call it else). The main advantage is
that nobody needs 6 characters, so you can calculate how many players can be online at max.

-If there is a max server cap. of 1000 seperate accounts, and 1/3 is multi, there is no possibility that all players are online. If
there are 1000 accounts which all contain 3 character slots, there will be no multiing and all 1000 players can theoretically be
                         online.

account? I guess he can play on my other comp anyway

Is it one account per comp?

I am a multi acct man, and I don\'t know how anyone can live with just one acct. I mean, yeah if you have several char slots, then
maybe, but I cannot stand bieng stuck with one kind of char. I play Redmoon right now, and have 3 accts... 3 chars on each
acct, that lets me have one of each char (RM has 9 chars) and I, or my roomates, have gotten almost every char to lvl 100 at
least, with 1 lvl 300 and a lvl 500. If I just had say, the 500, I would get bored and deleate him at least once a mth. This way you
never get sick of a char perm. When they get boring, switch chars until you feel like playing the original again!

Quite honestly I dont see the problem with server capacity. Assuming you write the game in an effeicent manner, an account
would consist of no more than a username, password and character information with perhaps some extras. I see no reason for it
to be more than 5kb or 6kb for each account. You could probably store thousands or tens of thousands without running out of
space, more likely I would imagine you would want to limit the maximum amount of people who can login at once. I still think if
you provide people with enough characters in an account they wont multi, either way, i find it annoying having to memorise
                         different passwords and usernames.

Damn right about the server space... don\'t know how I ever came to such an Idea. Although I think the space needed WILL be
more than 6k. Multiple chars (3) on one account would be the ideal solution.

Well, assuming you limit the items people have and leave things like the contents of houses and banks and etc out of the
character files and store it in other files then you could probably get it very small. As small as a few kb for each character, and
limiting that to 10 or so with additional 1k of data for password, username, profile, last login date/time, misc info, etc.

Bandwidth is not so likely to be in such as abundance as disk space though, and even companies like Blizzard and other free
online game providers have trouble keeping good quality connections to clients.

Im sure the programmers are thinking this all through and if done correctly, ie, using compression and effective database
solutions then the game can support alot of accounts as long as it isnt abused (ie, bots that go in and create thousands of
accounts and spam messages by concurrently connecting to hundreds of them) then they will be fine. Perhaps limiting
connections to 4 per IP address or something will be a good idea, maybe it can be upped for companies who force peopel to
connect via proxies and such making multiple people use a single IP.

Its all about planning and design though, and from what ive seen the team is quite good at that. Lets see how the game turns
                         out...

It should be one account that allows a set limit of characters that can be created.

It would be entirely unfair to allow us only 1 character and make there different classes, races, deities, etc. I don\'t know if any of
you play Everquest, but imagine that and imagine only being allowed one character. I\'m not saying have 50 characters on 1
                         account, but something within reason.

I\'d leave it up to the creators to decide how to prevent people from making multiple accounts.

i was going to say the same thing. several of these multy accounts belong to members of the family. like husband and wife, so
they can play the game together. same with like Craige(sp) said about siblings wanting to play at the same time. there are many
reasons for multiple accounts. only a few of them are people useing one to power another.

When the houses are available, I think that one person out of all the \"blocks\" of the houses should be some kind of master. The
masters would delete/sell the houses that are not used and/or abandoned to other users. They might also have some other kind
of powers but I\'ll leave that up to the developers =)

I have heard that everyone may get a house automatically. But if this was possible wouldn\'t the Planeshift world be extremely
cluttered seeing as how many people would play this game?

If thats the case then I suggest houses be a thing that can be bought and placed- as opposed to being something someone
                         automatically gets.

Also would players be able to set up there own shops by placing and pricing items to sell on a vendor?

It\'s not possible to give players a house automatically when they create their char, or we will end up with a world made of
                         abandoned houses.

Houses will be bought or assigned (we should yet decide on this topic), but for sure not at the first connection.

Talking about jobs, players will have job related skills and will have the option of running a shop or, better, a tavern.
