Ok, I think both sides have made their points. Please let's try staying on topic.

I really don't want to have to lock or cut my own thread  :sweatdrop:

Ok, our next meeting is tomorrow and our thinking caps will be turned on high as we go into much more specific research. Thanks everyone for you contributions, keep them coming.

It seems to me that there is a definite root problem that is not being addressed. The SkunkWorks are meant to think completely out-of-the-box... and so I was doing just that. By thinking completely creatively about issues, one tends to come up with radical ideas. Ideas that may rattle quite a number of boats.

Please read the SkunkWorks blog and give me some feedback either there or here about it.

Aiwendil. Glad to see you're still lurking around. Hope all is well with you. I realise that your experience gives you little faith in what I'm trying to achieve. Thank you for raising your concerns, I will take them to heart and do my best to be an exception to the rule. For clarity's sake let me reiterate what this team is attempting to do.

We are trying to gather information about what players would like to see in the game, various problems that prevent them from enjoying the game fully and then coming up with new and innovative was of dealing with the said problems. We then take the solutions directly to Talad, who will then pass it on to the team for implementation.

Now I realise that a major concern is that Talad is not going to approve anything that's not his idea. I don't believe this is the case, I think he realises that PlaneShift is in need of fresh ideas. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt.

Yes similar attempts have been made in the past and have failed. It does not necessarily mean that this is also going to fail. Give me a fair chance to prove it, please.

The PlaneShift SkunkWorks department is off to a good start. I have great faith in the team that has come together already. We had our first meeting on Wednesday out of that meeting sprung our first project.

Phase 1 of the project is to identify a problem area. We would therefore like to ask you to vote on the poll above so that we can start our research as soon as possible.

As a suggestion, the SkunkWorks team believe that we should focus on the mechanics and the engine for our first project, as this appears to be causing the most grief at the moment. If you do not agree, it would be helpful if you could specify the reasons behind your vote. This will only help in finding solutions to the problems.

As an alternative way to gather information, I have set up a survey on our website. Please fill it in if you have the time.

It's time for players to have their say as to how PlaneShift is developed. Please, use this opportunity and help us take PlaneShift into a brighter future.

Please have a look at our website for details and updates on our progress. The SkunkWorks team will do their best to stay open and transparent.

Together we will make a difference.

Do not be so quick to judge Talad, he's given us an opportunity, it's up to us to take it and make it our own.

Illysia: Thank you for your well wishing. Don't be discouraged because your attempt did not fully work out. Have faith that, in the end, the spirit of our community will carry the future projects that the SkunkWorks will launch into visible changes within the game.

taphan: Do not speak death into something without giving its a fair chance to prove itself. Channel you energy in a positive way and maybe, just maybe, things will start happening that not even I expect.

To answer your questions... for the moment I am responsible for who becomes members. Once I have a reliable base team running, then everyone on the team may give their feelings on each application.

The SkunkWorks will not be working under the ABC license, we're not licensing our ideas. We're going for a completely open and transparent approach, and everything that we do will be displayed for everyone to view and comment on. The work that comes out of the dev team as a result of our work, however, will still be put under the ABC license.

Thank you for the applications I have received so far, please don't hesitate if you feel this is something you want to do.

As a final thought... remember that the difference between a stumbling block and a stepping is stone is how you use it.

OTR... Clearly the most obvious candidate. Though learn to follow instructions. I said PM, not reply.

Verden, for you maybe. This question is actually there for a reason, if you can't answer it, then the skunkworks department is not for you. Lesson to all, do not judge a book by its cover. I've had applicants already who have taken it as seriously as any other question, which tells me a lot more about the applicants than they realise.

PlaneShift SkunkWorks Department

The PlaneShift project has always prided itself on being free and open source, open for anyone to contribute to. The reality is, however, that many players don’t really believe that it is. For a portion of the playerbase, the project seems closed to a large extent and not very open to community contributions.

The forum wishlist is full of excellent ideas, ideas which, unfortunately, often get lost in between all the not-so-good ideas. This makes players feel extremely discouraged because it appears as though their voices are not being heard.

The fact of the matter is that although we have very good ideas, the development team simply does not have the time to develop as well as sort through the masses of ideas to arrive at a workable plan.

It’s time to take action! In an attempt to remedy this age old problem, a new department has been launched and is now looking for team members. The PlaneShift Skunkworks department, based on the well known skunkworks project, initial brainchild of Lockhead (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skunkworks_project), will be responsible for bridging the gap between players and developers.

This team will run independently from the rest of the team, allowing them to think completely out of the box, away from coding restrictions, away from the cans and cannots unintentionally imposed by the dev team.

Skunkworks are a group of free thinkers, their job is to hear what the players want and to put it into a workable solution that the dev team can run with.

We are now looking for creative thinkers to help in this endeavour. In order to qualify for this team, you need to be at least 18 years of age (exceptions can be made if appropriate maturity is displayed by the applicant) and you must have an adequate amount of in-game experience.

To apply for a position please send me a PM with the following attached:

Roleplaying (Communitive Storywriting) / Re: Fhasha Qii
« on: October 02, 2010, 11:41:35 am »
[decided to get a bit creative again, since I can't log into the game for a couple of days]

Fhasha Qii, continued...

Time passed like water through a stream. Days meshed together in a blur of warmth and suspicious safety. Fhasha grew uneasy with each passing hour, passed experience has never allowed her to stay in one spot for long. She knew it was only a matter time before the kindly Enkidukai woman and her little son would be dead. Sitting in a old wooden chair at the other end of the ultic, the young boy shifted his gaze from his toys to her face. Peering deep into her mind, his expression seemed to reflect her fears. What is it about this child, surely he can't know? She had to leave, and soon.
Outside the elements were raging. The wind was blowing strong and rain was pouring. And somewhere, not to far, a sinister man with an even more sinister purpose took cover in the hollow of a tree, smiling as he watched the entrance to the magnificent Ojaveda city.
A chill ran down the spine of the troubled Fhasha, and all at once she tried to stand. With a wince of pain the Klyros doubled over, but remained on her feet, pushing the concerned young Enkidukai aside as he tried to get her back on the bed.
"Ubyna tanjeth zhrre!" cried the boy in a distressed voice. Though Fhasha was fond of the child, she did not hesitate to smack him out the way when he attempted once again to stop her. The young boy fell to the ground and broke out in tears. Each droplet of salty sadness like a blade tearing through her soul.

In the next moment Fhasha was weaving her way through the maze of Enkidukai homes, wiping the tears from her eyes as she went. Tears of physical pain and emotional regret. Finally the familiar site of Brado's Tavern came into view.
Glancing back one last time, Fhasha allowed herself a significant moment of sorrowful reflection.
In the one single moment her heart wrenched for a what she didn't have. And so the wind kept blowing and rain kept falling, and the boy kept crying and man... stopped smiling.

to be continued...

Lolitra, we've been friends on and off ever since I started playing. Sure we didn't RP as much as we could have but we've had our moments. Thank you for being such an inspiration to so many people, including me. You will always have a place in my heart.

Never met a gaming community this nice.   :D

 Wait for it guys... keeping luring him into a false sense of security... patience... soon he will know the truth.

Ahem... glad you're having a positive first experience. If you find RP fun, don't let anyone stop you from doing it. Yliakum is your stage, the other player are simply other improv characters!

Aside from the day-to-day player-to-player RPs, please keep a look out for GM events and other player organised events. Be sure to check the event calendar. Events are perfect ways to spark off RPs.

Have fun!

Like the angry irishman said, GMs have those options available. Different text color is actually quite sensible, it'll make separating GM text from your RP a lot easier. Plus you'll know instantly that its a gm talking. I mean anyone can say "This is a GM".
