Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: First Post
« on: July 23, 2011, 07:30:42 pm »
First of all, welcome and I hope you find the game enjoyable :) I do have a few comments to make on your points.

1) I think you are a bit mistaken at how you progress in this game. You train/learn the stats and skills individually and by your own choosing in such a way that trying to estimate a base level for the whole character is virtually impossible. Thus, it is also difficult to say if a quest is too difficult for you right now or not.
In addition, if it turns out that it is, there is always the possibility to reach out to your fellow gamers and ask/pay for help (at least on the RP server, can't really speak for the other one). It gives the game a more realistic feeling in my opinion, no one can do everything.
Also, with the new quest system in place, you need to have done some rather easy quests first to get to the more difficult as well as some quests require you to have certain skills at a certain level.

2) This game tries to do the opposite of what you portrait here, where the non-RP server are more of the "step child". The RP server is the largest one of the two and most of us welcome new RPers, or even people who don't want to RP as long as they don't make the game less enjoyable for others around them. You are allowed to go afk whenever you need, or express any other non-RP concern. We just ask that you put that "out of character" (OOC) talk in brackets [] if you are talking in the Main chat. And there are plenty of other chat channels where most/all of the talk is OOC.
The reason for making a non-RP server as well is so that you have a choice to be completely free of such rules all the time. That way you can be as OOC as you want, without making the game less enjoyable for those that really wish to immerse themselves into the game world. And no, not everyone can be adults about it. This is the internet, after all.

3) It might come in the future, but right now this game is still developing on so many other important things that personal housing is miles down the list.

4) I hope that you'll also join us at the RP server at some point. As I said, it's more crowded and I also think it will show you that we are not as excluding as you fear :)

I picked this cause it happened to me at the store a few hours back:

Original text:

"There's a cat sitting in the car next to me and it's staring at me."

...50 translations later we get:

"I'm in the car on Saturday"

General Discussion / Re: Settings Question: Laanx and the Dark Way
« on: June 26, 2011, 07:53:28 pm »
No, Laanx and Dakkru are not positioned as evil. Black Flame on the other hand is.

I'm of the impression that BF is more indifferent rather than pure evil. As long as the goal is reached (whatever it is) the means of getting there doesn't matter.

Also, Laanx slaying a whole bunch of Klyroses cause they wouldn't bow to her/his divinity sounds a bit evil to me. S/he even used a Dark Way spell to do it  :detective: That being said, I also believe that the evil/good of a particular Way should be based on the individual using it rather than the way itself.

In-Game Roleplay Events / Re: 1st Hydlaa East Company Auction
« on: June 09, 2011, 03:55:46 pm »
Firstly, I wish Catlemur all luck with the auction. It´s nice to see that some are willing to upheld the mercantile business and bring healthy competition  :)

Secondly, albeit a bit to the side of the matter, I do only give estimates based on my experience with playing a merchant character for well over a year (Narivis) and personal, subjective view. If I remember correctly, I said that I personally wouldn´t give more than 100k for the galkards. That does not mean that they might not be worth more to collectors. If you wait long enough and don´t mind ripping some poor chap off, you could surely sell them for a million a piece if lucky. Or that chap simply has too much tria to care for the RP of bargaining.

I agree with Mekora that these items might not be the most sought after ones, but you could still manage to sell them. The only question is wether you are patient enough to wait, which you will have to do for some of the items which are a tad overpriced by NPC versus the value people see in them in terms of their benefitial traits. Over time Narivis (for RPs sake, but also for not getting a too full inventory) has gotten a tad picky about what items to sell to the general public and what should go directly to Harn. That does not mean that everything I let go to Harn can´t be sold, I just simply think it will hold up inventory space for longer than it´s worth.

Here in Norway, the Data Retention Directive just got passed. People didn't want it, the opposers called it a violation to the European Human Rights Convention, and the hackers of Anonymous are daily bringing down the official sites of the government parties that voted for it.

Seeing as I had to get up at around 6 am when I was in high school to get there in time, I've been up at 6 am many times on school nights  :P

HYE hacked something? (Just finished reading Jeffery Deaver's The Blue Nowhere, go read!)

HYE watched a muisical what one?

I hope you mean like a live performance and not on dvd  ;D I've seen performances of West Side Story and Singing in the Rain  :)

HYE seen a cult classic? Which one(s)?

First of all, welcome. I hope you'll have a good time playing this game  :)

I don't know if there will be a way of progressing that high up into the government, but there are methods one can use to become a noteable citizen that the government and guards value. And of course one can RP that you have a high standing, as long as you don't overdo it and try to write ammendments into the Octarchal Decree and such  ;)

I agree that the "gossip" channel is quite irritating when you're not wanting to hear the whole community throwing clackers at each other and whatnot. And it should have been disabled in Option -> Interface -> Chat -> Uncheck "Join default channel" I believe.
For PMs that are used in an IC way, people often "send" their pet Groffel with the message. For example: Koios says: [A pet Groffel approaches Hal and offers him a small note. It reads: Greetings! Could you be so kind and bring me 2 Night Mushrooms from the forrest I hear you are currently exploring.]

We do have a "Introduce" button, however it doesn't seem to do anything right now. For now, you'll just have to rely on your own mindset to see any you haven't met before as anonymous.

You can find people that will take any RP attack as an OOC offence and act accordingly. However, evil characters are supposed to ask the victim if it's okey that they attack/rob/be evil against them so that everyone can decide if they want to be part of such a RP at that time. If they say yes, they usually go with character description to try to find the culprit. If items/tria have been stole, the robber is also supposed to give the victim a very fair chance to ICly find a way to get them back. We do have characters in here that are only ICly known by their aliases.

Developers have an OOC event you can attend to ask them about things, check the Event Calendar.  As you see the next one of those is March 22.
You also have the SkunkWorks projects you can look into.

Hope this has answered some of your questions  :)

The Hydlaa Plaza / Re: The Book Thread
« on: March 15, 2011, 12:42:42 pm »
I love to read. I've found good reads in many books and there's really nothing like being completely engulfed by the story of a great book.
Some of the books I can recommend (some others have as well, but worth re-mentioning):

C. S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia
Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy
Kafka's The Trial
Francesco Colonna's Poliphilo's Strife of Love in a Dream (to spark curiosity if you're not sure you want to read it: The Rule of Four by Ian Caldwell and Dustin Thomason)
Jules Verne's Mathias Sandorf
J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels
John Grisham's The Innocent Man (his fiction novels are also great, but this nonfiction really got to me)
Jo Nesbø's The Harry Hole novels
Tom Egeland's Circle's End, Guardians of the Covenant & Gospel of Lucifer (unnamed novel series)

I could go on and on, but I'll leave it there for now  :)

As long as magic is allowd, DW masters are going to be 1-hit killing each other with that one spell i forgot...
Might just be  potential 1 hit kills, haven't been in game since before stats/skills were moved to 400/200
Not possible, it wasn't even possible at the old stats max. And two DW masters going at eachother would take a long time seeing as they are somewhat "immune" to the spells.

Small comment on the dueling rules:  If you're doing one-on-one dueling, and are allowing food/potions, the duels themselves will never end... Players have shortcuts such as /use 15 Greater Potion of Healing that essentially fill up their entire health bar.  With some of the duelists at 1600 hit points, it will quickly become a contest of who's got the most potions or bread crumbs.
Not necessarily. If you get in a skilled/lucky hit, you are able to take down an opponent with 1600 HP in 1-2 hits. So potions/foods would only be of use in the case of hits that just leaves a fleshwound.

This sounds like fun, around what date(s) will this event happen?  :)

Yes I remember those amateur tournaments from when I first started playing. Would be fun to bring back.

A note about tournaments. I think those should be capped in skills, by having different tournaments for different ranks. The same way you don't have a lightweight boxer do a tournament with an heavy weight. Having tournaments with very uneven participants sounds pretty wrong to me. The cap should be set as the sum of physical and mental stats, and potentially a cap for a single stat not greater than x. People organizing the events can set the rule and make it clear for all participants. Every tournament need a judge to ensure the rule is respected (through divination items or spells).
I agree, but before we had a certain spell that would allow someone from the actual guild organizing the tournament to be judge. Right now you would have to "book" a GM for the tournament so that they can check that everyone follows the set rules. But from your ( ) there it sounds like this might be reverted back to somewhat what it used to be?  :)

Not really, but I have seen some postures that looked more painful than others.

HYE read or listened to something while typing and then written that instead of what you were going to write?

PS (hihi, get it?  ;D ): Little vermin story from Norway: This rat (Rattus norvegicus) had been in this person's basement and gone through half a 25 kg sack of protein powder. It measured 3 times as long and 4 times as heavy as a regular rat.
