Wish list / Re: Concerns about the new unreal engine 4

OSG is not a game engine, using it would require a lot of work. Of course it will only optimize graphics, not other parts like networking, physics (collision) and other game play features.

It is suitable for games according to the site. And OpenMW already ported their initial implementation to it in a rather short time, switching from Ogre 3D:
https://openmw.org/2015/openscenegraph-port-playable/
Current state of PS doesn't look way more demanding graphics wise than OpenMW in general.

Anyway, I don't think Unreal is a bad choice per se, except for it not being FOSS. It is a pretty good engine technically.

I'm more concerned about it not being FOSS. For example OpenMW chose Open Scene Graph.

More about direction and vision of the project: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/the-bards-tale-iv/posts/1257806

It has a Q&A video with Brian Fargo which answers various questions about combat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CZEYuJQPX8

Did they have any more details on this than the video on the KS page? I want to see some of their work in progress, if that's possible.

They didn't talk much about technical details yet. But they claim that the in-engine footage is running on current hardware, and it's not faking it (performance wise):

The in-engine video is most definitely real-time and won't melt your computer - I've seen it running fine "off the rails" on our internal systems.

The idea that we will sacrifice gameplay for graphics (or will want to vice-versa) is a little misplaced. High-quality art and art direction aren't mutually exclusive with good design or gameplay. Real-world game development doesn't work that way - though obviously there's a trade-off between spending time on polishing up existing content, vs. spending time making brand-new content.

I wouldn't worry much about that at this point anyway. Early prototypes don't need to stay the same. They can revamp their approach several times before the release. Publishers usually demand developers to produce approximate "how it will look" prototype before funding anything. But it's not so good for developers since it doesn't allow flexibility and redesign if necessary. Underworld Ascendant developers spoke about it. So I see early prototypes as just an example of their artistic vision, not as how the final game will look.

The song in the video is a translation of the poem from the The Bard's Tale I intro in Scottish Gaelic by Julie Fowlis (she is singing it as well): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6EkbfgXqWg
She'll be also working on other songs for the game.

By the way, the campaign is already over one million with more than 24 thousand backers: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/the-bards-tale-iv

Once again you have come through with a smashing first day. We are just 11 hours into the campaign and have already achieved 50% of Kickstarter goal for the Bard's Tale IV. I must also thank my many industry friends who have supported us through their social media campaigns. This list extends to our so called competition like Obsidian, Larian, Harebrained, Cryptozoic, Otherworld, Portalairum, Razer and so many others. The concept of game companies supporting each other in such a grand scale was unheard of many years ago. Our relationships have grown closer with you and the development community, the way it always should have been. Our 24 hour promotion for free copies of Wasteland 2, or The Witcher, or The Witcher 2 continues on until 6am PST tomorrow morning, so make sure to tell your friends before it runs out. With Wasteland 2, we're happy to have people enjoy the fruits of our first Kickstarter campaign as a company as we hope to keep these going for a long time to come.

tbh I thought they cancelled Cyberpunk 2077. Guess they had to finish something else before getting to it.

No, it's their long term project. See here: https://www.cdprojekt.com/en/Capital_group/Strategia_rozwoju

I can't wait to see this finished by CD Projekt Red: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P99qJGrPNLs  :sweatdrop:

Yeah, that's going to take quite a while still :)

Ooo this game actually looks pretty cool, although I've only watched the first video that was posted.

Note, the video above is a CGI, not an in-game footage. But story wise it's a great work and very fitting for the Witcher world (it's more complex than it appears at the first glance).

Speaking of "downgrades":

Nah, I don't really care about all this "downgrade" ruckus - too much noise for nothing. Regardless whether some graphics became worse or not, I'm more interested in the story than in graphics eye candy there (but I agree that consoles do affect PC games negatively). What upsets me more is that Linux version is nowhere in sight, so I won't be able to play it until who knows when :(.

What's a police state Gilrond?

Like Oceania in 1984 ;)

Since when are you an expert on GM issues? Sure looks like "hacking into transmissions from the server" to me.

Since it's traffic coming to you. You are not hacking into anything. If you claim you can't read your own traffic it's some kind of police state your are talking about.

It's not against the rules. Reading your own network traffic is perfectly fine.
