Wish list / Re: Resurrect the PVP Zones
« on: February 26, 2016, 08:03:12 am »
I personally am not a fan of PVP, but I can appreciate what such an area could be.

I don't think having such an area on a mine or other mineral resource would be very good, as it would make trying to get a certain ore a nightmare and frustrate gameplay. I do like the idea of having such an area in a valley - there is a lot of space, people could come and watch if they really want, plus there would be an opportunity to use the environment such as rock formations or trees to your advantage if it was applicable.

For all that you don't see many people at the Bronze fort, it would not be very IC realistic for it to be a PvP area. It is a military establishment, full of the toughest warriors there to defend Yliakum. Nobody would be allowed to fight each other there - it would go against the idea of it and the spirit of the IC laws. On the other hand, if we made a particular part of it, like a ring or colosseum or a training ground as a PvP area, it could be more realistic - It could have "Guards" or "Warriors" stationed there for people to fight. Besides, it would ruin such a magnificent place to turn it into a PvP area - no one would be able to use its grandure for anything then.

Speaking of such rings, could there be other places like that around the dome? The IC Laws state that if you want to duel go to a designated spot or outside - PVP areas by or connected to a city could be a place for such things to happen. Or if we don't want rings just parts of lawless areas could be converted, as has been mentioned previously though not all areas else wise quests would become quite difficult.

[Hahaha good job Feas! Free gear. I might have to try it at some point.]

The Hydlaa Plaza / Re: MUDdy Yliakum
« on: February 21, 2016, 10:56:27 am »
Quite frankly I had to look up what you were talking about, as I had never even heard of MUD type gaming before - and it doesn't sound all that appealing to me. What I was looking for when I found PS was a 3d game - using a more text based format just doesn't fill that want.

I can appreciate a version of ps that would allow for more character action control etc, but the loss of that visual aspect would lose some of the charm and a lot of the game I was looking for when I came here.

Another aspect to remember is what new players might want - how many people really play text based games anymore? Could we lose people if we went towards a textual version? Would there be new players out there who want to play a more text based version of ps, not just longtime (or short time) fans who are already here?

Mac OSX Specific Issues / Re: Game crashing
« on: February 18, 2016, 07:51:57 am »
I tried reducing to a lower size and that appears to have worked, and I am running 0.6.4 as the client, so I am pretty sure that I am up to date. If the problem reoccurs, I will seek further assistance.

I mainly crashed in Hydlaa, because that is where the first crashes occurred, and I was just unable to move any where. I could move between places well enough, in the longer times I could go back and forth between areas such hydlaa and hydlaa east, or the BD road. The crash would occur sometimes very close together, when I thought it might be to do with command typing, other times just standing still, sometimes running in an area. But almost always these occurred in Hydlaa, when there were not that many people on.

Mac OSX Specific Issues / Game crashing
« on: February 17, 2016, 07:29:53 am »
While playing wplaneshift in the past few days, my game started to crash, regularly. At first I thought nothing of it, simple an over load, so I tried again, and it would crash again - it seemed to occur while I was typing whispers so, for I while I tested that, but it was mere coincidence. I checked here and followed as many tips as I could, starting with the stickies, clearing the cache, making my settings lower and running repair many times over - which passed. After several changes had been made to lower the settings and what appeared (e.g. grass) I was able to play the game, but it crashed again - if after a longer time then all the others.

I have the log from console, but it is longer then the post space available. Any advice on how to continue would be appreciated.

Development Team Blog / Re: Putting gold man pop ups to use.
« on: February 14, 2016, 10:00:25 pm »
This is an excellent idea, that I really appreciate as a new player.

I found when I first started crafting items using a table, a reminder or a walkthrough would have been deeply appreciated - it makes sense to put things in a forge, but not in a table. Other things like tools for mining or fishing could be easier to use with even just one pointer as to what do to. Maybe certain objects that you acquire, like a summoning ring (I think thats what you call it) could have even just one pop up on how to use/access it.

Frankly I don't know of enough things to give something really in-depth, it will be interesting to see what others think.

General Discussion / Re: Bad guys, good RP(!/?) [OOC]
« on: February 14, 2016, 04:09:22 am »
I find this to be a very interesting topic, especially as my character is rather grey in some areas.

This is a complex issue, with several sides, and which may never have a satisfactory answer for all - it is physically impossible to get that kind of outcome.

Some of the ideas here, such as making the sewers and outside the cities bad guy friendly could be a very good idea, if implemented properly. Making it harder for new players to get about, explore and experience Yliakum would be a very bad idea. If this idea is to be used, we have to consider how it would effect new players, the ones who rejuvenate the game. I know that if I had had to interact with other players too quickly, or too violently, before I even had a chance to get the know the game, I would have probably quit, too put off by something I didn't quite get yet. Just letting someone know before hand, or even just picking your victims well should help in that regard.

On the other hand I can sympathise with not wanting to have to ask and break the story to play out your character.

Something that could happen would be to have areas were villainy is common and for players to WARNED ABOUT IT before hand, somehow, say signs or in the tutorial etc - digression of devs team. And also to incorporate a previous idea, something in the colour of a name that lets people know if you have been a member for very long or not - so that you can tell when you are about to jump somebody who has know idea of what they are doing. The idea of a check system that lets others know if you want to rp is quite unwieldy, i think, as when I had my first interaction with another player, I didn't know if I wanted to or not and it is only through the interaction itself that I discovered I wanted to. Having that check in place could stop players from interacting with someone who is new, and was unsure, so they just ticked a box. Then, because they don't know if they like the whole game AND the other players - we could be losing people for something arbitrary. There is also the hassle of changing the check box which could be very frustrating. Say you forget and go somewhere expecting an rp and you get ignored for it - problems abound.

What ever may happen, we can't expect to make everyone happy - but we have to try.

I will keep an eye out for you, feas and I completely understand your issues with crafting, I could not work out the system for a very long time, it nearly drove me away, but then I clicked on a table the right way and everything fell into place.

I have only just started playing in the past few days, and this will be my first post to the forums, but I feel like I have been caught already.

I have never played a game like this before, never role-played, nor even really played any online games in years.

Plane shift came as an experience. Sometimes a hard one (installation nightmare, but worth it), but something kept me here. I don't know if it was me, the game or something entirely different.

I joined because I finally had the tech and the time to play a game, and planeshift was free, mac compatible and highly recommended online. So I tried it. There was barely anyone around and I spent my time trying to understand how things worked, whether to commit or just leave now. I was intimidated by the idea of interaction (I'm not like that so an unusual and unsettling feeling for me) with people who would be more experienced and with a community they already knew and that I did not.

Some people tried being polite, but I didn't notice until too late, or was caught up trying to do something or just didn't realise because I have never, ever played with a chat like this and therefore had no clue as to what was going on at first. Then it became a habit to be aloof, my character didn't like nor trust people anyway.

Then, earlier today in-fact, just after I had read and read and read up on the forums about tips for new players and roleplaying, a guy at Harnquist's forge said hello. I took a very deep breath, thought on what many of you here on the forums had said and had a go trying out Calantha's (my characters) voice.

We didn't say much to each other, it wasn't deep or epic or long, but I got help that I needed, I didn't feel like I was an idiot, and he (I can't remember his whole name it started with A and had a last name like Elendir?) took a moment to talk to someone who wasn't being very forth coming at first and was just nice. no insane theatrics or anything, just nice. I came away from that event smiling behind my screen and a warmth in my heart - that was when I knew I had to stay and really try to explore this game and meet other players.

This will be hard, as I go on during Australian hours and have a character who dislikes people - but I will try, because there something here that I like and would like to experience more of.
