ATI X1600 graphics card work-around
« on: October 30, 2007, 06:45:07 am »
It seems like we might have found a work-around which will solve the system crash on intel-based macs using the ATI X1600 graphics card. Use it at your own risk, of course. :)

I do not know how this relates to problems others have experienced, but feel free to try. Maybe it is a magic cure for all. ;)

As has been mentioned before, the crash problems on X1600 graphics cards is most likely caused by a driver bug. However, by disabeling some of the shader capabilities, it appears like we are able to avoid the offending code. More specifically:

1) Open the file psclient.cfg in a text editor.
2) Add the following two lines to the end of that file:

       Video.OpenGL.Shader.Cg.Enable.Fragment=false
       Video.OpenGL.Shader.Cg.Enable.Vertex=false

3) Save the file, and hope for the best.

Thanks to Iriss for patiently testing my various attempts before arriving at this one.  :flowers:

I hope it works for others too. :sweatdrop:

Didn't try long term...
But!

As it would work for about 30 seconds before this little change, running around the sewers and the city for five minutes and having no problem seems to say:
Fix!  Yay!  \\o//

You guys are my personal heroes for the next... oh... five minutes.  :thumbup:

That lines also helped the graphics problem I had, after upgrading to Leopard on a 2x1,8 PowerMac.  Thanks alot.

I love you so much for proposing this. No crash, even after more than five minutes. And almost no lag. :thumbup: That was definitely worth the waiting :D
Thank for the hard work. And thanks to the team for 3.020.

Any text editor program I try to do this with won't let me save it when I'm done. Text Editor says just that it can not be saved. Microsoft Word tells me: This file is read-only. To save a copy give the document a new name in the save dialog box. Has this been noticed before? I am sorry if it has but I didn't want to check too much. I want to get to playing. I am having the same thing happen to me as the guy in the "The world according to me on Leopard." I am running Leopard. If anyone could tell me how to avoid this it would be helpful.

Did you copy the game from the disk image to your computer? Are you an administrator?

Hi, I just want to post some additional information. I have two machines I tried this on,

a 1st gen Macbook Pro (2.16Ghz core duo, 2gb ram, 256mb ATI Radeon X1600, Mac OS 10.5.1)
a Mac Pro (two 2Ghz Xeon 5130's, 6gb ram, 512mb ATI Radeon X1900XT, Mac OS 10.5.1)

I wasn't getting any crashes but the graphics were so garbled on both that I couldn't see or do anything. Here's a screenshot http://loveturtle.net/stuff/ps/ps-garbled.png
After adding these two lines to psclient.cfg the graphical glitches were gone on both machines and everything appears to be fine (i only played for a few seconds). Here's a screenshot after the changes http://loveturtle.net/stuff/ps/ps-fine.png

So, Anyone experiencing horrible graphical glitches on Mac OS should try this out.

I have to chime in too. My MacBook & iMac would completely lock up after the game started (would require a reboot to unlock). After this fix, the game seems to be working perfectly on both machines. Kudos, guys!
Specs of iMac & MacBook are the same:  OS X 10.4.11. 2.16Ghz Intel core duo, 1 Gb RAM, ATI Radeon X1600 video card.

I am having the same problem, I can not save the changes. I did copy the the disk image to my folder and I am the admin. But, I've only had my Mac since March so I am pretty new to Macs and may be missing something.

I had it under applications, do I need to move it to Mac HD or elsewhere?
