The instructions how to download and build from sources are here: PlaneShift Compiling Guide. You don't need to know any programming languages, but you do need some tools like compilers etc. used in programming. Some basic knowledge about programming will also help.

The instructions you are reading are for building Planeshift in the mingw os in windows. If you are just trying to build planeshift on standard Windows XP, please use the windows - msvc selection instead of windows-gcc.
If you just want Planeshift to run so you can play it on windows XP, please try the binary version first. It is much easier to work with. It is located at: http://www.planeshift.it/download.html

Please come to the #planeshift-build channel (using an irc client) in freenode.net if you need more help building the Planeshift client.
Thanks.

Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

To get the server too, you're going to have to compile. Use the guide that was linked to early in this thread, but make sure that "Windows" and not "Linux" is selected as your OS.

best direction would be climb on to irc #planeshift-build on irc.freenode.net for more info and getting it done in nearer real time then doing it on the forums.
may laanx frighten the shadow from my path.
hardly because the shadow built the lexx.
the shadow will frighten laanx from my path.

Damn you, Induane, you wouldn't reveal our plans yet!

By the way, you won't get the usr/src part if you selected windows, so you probably just didn't select it, you must select --> MSVC <--
