The Hydlaa Plaza / Anyone use Google Wave?
« on: November 12, 2009, 02:04:11 am »
So can anyone actually use this thing?  Google finally gave me a couple invites yesterday, but I don't know anyone else who has an account there and I really need to know what can be done with it in a collaborative environment.  I'm hoping to take advantage of this thing for my guild, and I know some of you people were interested in it when it first came out.

For those of you who don't know what Google Wave is:  http://wave.google.com

My handle:  rmnickell2@googlewave.com

A couple of screenshots here.  Clearly, the whole point of Google Wave is to better manage your contact lenses.

Google Wave has revolutionary features, such as Playback which allows the user to SEE INTO THE FUTURE:

Forum and Website Discussions / I think it's 2009 now
« on: September 03, 2009, 05:11:10 am »
The main site says:

Now, I don't know a whole lot about copyright, but I do know how to read a calendar and I'm pretty certain it's no longer 2007.

Yes I know Talad is the only one who can update it, I am posting this as a convenience for him because due to the color and it being on the bottom of the page it can be easily overlooked.

General Discussion / What PlaneShift is not
« on: August 05, 2009, 12:08:53 am »
I came up with an idea to make a "What PlaneShift is not" thread a couple weeks ago, so here it is.  The idea here is to come up with a list of objective perceptions of what the game is not, so newer people can read it like an FAQ.  Other people were discussing the same "PlaneShift is not ___" topic on the fan channel today, but most of the opinions were subjective and I think we can achieve higher quality and more meaningful results on the forum.

This is modeled off of similar community websites and open source projects that have a "What _____ is not" section as part of their FAQ or About pages.

Here are some rules to this thread:
  • If you are adding a new entry to this thread, then your post must follow the pattern "PlaneShift is not _____" followed by a decent justification as a defense.  Your justification should be more than one sentence or as long as it takes to defend your entry, and it shouldn't be any more than a couple of paragraphs.
  • Commenting on entries is allowed, as long as your comments are MEANINGFUL.  We don't care if you agree or disagree with an entry unless you can contribute a new opinion to the discussion.  We are shooting for a thread of high quality; don't taint this thread by writing every other post on it, and no backseat modding either.  Also, this thread is not for writing books.
  • No nonsensical or subjective entries.  Entries must be meaningful and objective, and entry content must be decent enough for people to want to read.  "PlaneShift is not a complete game" is OK, "PlaneShift is not fun" is bad because we don't care what your opinion is and not everyone agrees with it.
  • Juxtaposition is fine only if you can justify it by providing a rigorous and meaningful comparison.  For example, "PlaneShift is not Darkfall", and explaining that it's not FFA PvP with looting, is fine.
  • No ambiguous or vague entries; we don't want to confuse people who read this thread with double entendres.  If it can be interpreted in more than one way, then be more specific.  No astroturfing either.  "PlaneShift is not open source" is bad because it is ambiguous and only a small and insignificant group of people would ever use the extreme definition.  "PlaneShift is not open content" is better because it is more specific.
  • For God sakes, don't post anything on here without reading the OP.
  • If there are any good ones then we should consider moving them into the OP to make them easier to find.

I will start off with an easy one because I am in a hurry to get this thread started:

Complaint Department / Stop telling people to get a job
« on: February 06, 2009, 12:54:53 am »
That's like telling someone on this forums to go buy a house or to go make a baby.  You just don't say that kind of thing casually to people you don't know very well because it's rude.  I don't want to see people casually linking to the nexus page every time I come here.  If you want to recruit then please be serious about recruiting people; that way people will know you are serious about recruiting.  I know recruiting is an important thing here and this is why I take recruiting seriously in my guilds, and not just casually like some guilds have done.

This thread is about a common world loading problem when using certain versions of ATI Catalyst.  If your psclient is crashing on world loading, then try running pssetup and turning off the Vertex Buffer Object (VBO) option.  If it works without crashing on world load after this, then the problem you are having is discussed on this thread.  This is known for all versions of ATI Catalyst 8.5 and later; if you're having the same problem on another card then please post on this thread.  This is also true for all programs that use Crystal Space, including walktest, but only on certain maps that PlaneShift uses.  If you really want VBO turned on, then you'll have to revert to Catalyst 8.4 or earlier.

I had to modify my OP because a lot of people were being referred to this thread and couldn't find how we were getting psclient to work without crashing.

Quote from: Original Post (Tuxide)
Has anyone gotten psclient to work using ATI Catalyst 8.5 drivers?  When I run psclient, it crashes for me on the world loading screen when trying to spawn in either Gugrontid or bdroad1 (but it displays podium just fine).  It behaves just fine when I downgrade to ATI Catalyst 8.4 however, and also other OpenGL programs such as Blender3D runs fine on the newer driver.

Here is my system:
  • Windoze XP Home Edition with SP2
  • AMD Athlon XP 2000+
  • 1 GB RAM
  • ATI All-in-Wonder X800XT (using two monitors)

I'm using my own psclient compiled from SVN with the -fullbright option, and I'm using the version of podium with parallax and specular.

Update (July 2009)

If you are on Windoze and are using a card on this list (including mobile and All-in-Wonder variants) then you must turn VBO off in pssetup, or revert to Catalyst 8.4 or earlier, to play PlaneShift.  I don't know about more recent cards, but the reason I am posting this is that ATI is no longer making drivers for these.  The last driver to support these cards is Catalyst 9.3.

Update (December 2009)

From what I can tell, this problem does not exist in PlaneShift 0.5 and is only specific to PlaneShift versions 0.4.01 to 0.4.03, or the versions that use Crystal Space 1.4.  Unless people are still having this problem, this thread is now obsolete.

When I am running psclient on my laptop, I've always had a problem where opening up certain windows (for example, Spell Book or Options) would crash psclient.  I've had the problem since 0.3.018 (pretty much since I owned the machine) and I've now found a temporary fix that works for me.  Basically, all I did was remove the background image from the windows I was having problems with, and I did so by removing a certain line from the PAWS XML files that defined these windows.  If anyone else is having a similar problem, feel free to try this out and let me know if it works.  Or if it doesn't.  Furthermore, if anyone finds a more elegant solution to this--and by that I mean one that loads the background images without crashing psclient--please post your solution here.

All files listed are in your PlaneShift install's data/gui/ folder.  Also, make sure you make backups of your files before editing them.

For the Options window, find and remove the following line from configwindow.xml (or comment it out, whatever)
Code: [Select]

<bgimage resource="Config Background" alpha="128"/>

For the List Petitions window, remove the following line from petition.xml
Code: [Select]

<bgimage resource="Petitions Background" alpha="128" />

For the Quest & Events Notebook window, remove the following line from questnotebook.xml
Code: [Select]

<bgimage resource="Quests Background" alpha="128" />

For the Merchant (buying and selling) window, remove the following line from merchant.xml
Code: [Select]

<bgimage resource="Merchant Background" alpha="0" />

For the Spell Book window, remove the following line from spellwindow.xml
Code: [Select]

<bgimage resource="Spellbook Background" alpha="128" />

For the Glyphs window, remove the following line from glyph.xml
Code: [Select]

<bgimage resource="Glyphs Background" alpha="128" />

For the Read Book window, remove the following line from readbook.xml
Code: [Select]

<bgimage resource="ReadBook Background" />

For the Book Writing window, remove the following line from bookwriting.xml
Code: [Select]

<bgimage resource="ReadBook Background" />

On my laptop, I am running Windows Vista Business with an Intel T2060 Dual Core 1.6 GHz (prescott family) processor with 2 GB of RAM and an ATI Mobility Radeon X1400.  I had the same problem with both the official install and my compiled version of psclient on my laptop, and it didn't matter if I built against the default architecture or with -march=prescott.  I've heard of people with Linux who have had a similar problem to what I had.  Namely with dual core systems.

Neko, please please please don't move this thread to Fan Art like you did that other one.

Forum and Website Discussions / Hey guys, we all need to be nice here
« on: February 05, 2008, 03:39:01 am »
Hey all, UTM and I were having this conversation on the IRC fan channel and we decided that we posters all need to be nice here on the forums.  That way the forum mods will start be nicer to us.  So we all need to get together here and start being really nice here from now on, okay everyone?

P.S.  And if we're all really really nice here maybe Neko will remove the flamewar from his sig ;-)
