"The ordinal 11 could not be located"
« on: April 13, 2008, 04:15:47 pm »
I am not computer savvy.

Operating System:  Windows 2000
Processor:  No idea, but it doesn't seem relevant, considering the missing-something nature of the error
Graphics Card:  See above
System Memory:  See above
Video Memory:  See above

Full error message upon attempting to open the client: "The ordinal 11 could not be located in the dynamic link library DSOUND.dll"

I downloaded 0.4.000 using BitTorrent. There are six items in the PlaneShift folder - client, two guides, setup, updater, and uninstall.

I have no idea what an ordinal or a dynamic link library are, or where they should be, or what they're supposed to do, so yeah...

EDIT: Oh, and when I saw the word "sound" I tried disabling sound from the setup screen, but that didn't do anything either.

you'd be surprised at some of the screw ball interaction that come up on compters. so maybe not as ignoreable as you might think. but, what sound card do you have? have you updated the drivers?
may laanx frighten the shadow from my path.

the shadow will frighten laanx from my path.

I think the sound card is Yamaha DS-XG. (Google tells me that that’s a sound card, so I’ll assume that I picked the right name out of my control panel.) I've just downloaded another driver for it - dunno if it's newer or the same - so I'll go restart and check.

*edit*

...okay, the driver crashed my sound system.

"ordinal ... cannot be found" normally indicates that a dynamic library is found, but it is not the version expected by the program.

I've had this issue myself, only with zlib. It seems you have the wrong version of the dll, this is a common issue with Windows when various programmes/drivers use different versions of dll's.

Gah. That = download latest driver, yes? Did that. I think the rest of my computer is too old or something. Anyway, it won’t recognize the sound card anymore.

Install the latest DirectX version from Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx

If you do not want to install the DirectX, you may also try the following steps,

    * Step 1, download this new version file "dsound.dll" to your computer. Download it
    * Step 2, reboot your computer and enter in safe mode.
    * Step 3, rename the old file "dsound.dll" under the windows' "System32" folder to another file name for backup.
    * Step 4, copy the new downloaded file "dsound.dll" to the windows' "System32" folder.
    * Step 5, reboot your computer.

Alternatively you can download the dll here.
