When I finish downloading the update, the window shuts down without an error message with the update uninstalled. The console reported "md5sum of updater.zip does not match correct md5sum" how do I fix this?

Couldn't an inscription work like how books work? Only the purchaser/creator can buy them and they can inscribe what they like? I'm not sure how much a convoluted step that is for the engine, but I think with some twisting, someone might be able to find a way without wasting too much time.

I recomend right clicking and examining a monster before you attack it. As a rule of thumb, I don' attack it unless it says it is weaker than me, so that even if I con't beat it, it won't kill me in one hit.

Go to System Preferences, System, Accounts.
Click on your account and make sure "allow user to administer this computer" is checked.
If its not, that's how you set it to admin.
If it is, I would try adding another account by clicking the plus and set that one up for admin, log into it and see if you can do it from there.
