General Discussion / What PlaneShift Is
« on: August 05, 2009, 05:59:05 pm »
Since intimation is the best form of flattery, I have decided to take Tuxide's idea and make a counterpart for it. After all, it's only fair that there are both available to new players to read:

I came up with an idea to make a "What PlaneShift is" thread a couple weeks ago, so here it is.  The idea here is to come up with a list of objective perceptions of what the game is, so newer people can read it like an FAQ.  Other people were discussing the same "PlaneShift is ___" topic on the fan channel today, but most of the opinions were subjective and I think we can achieve higher quality and more meaningful results on the forum.

This is modeled off of similar community websites and open source projects that have a "What _____ is " section as part of their FAQ or About pages.

Here are some rules to this thread:
  • If you are adding a new entry to this thread, then your post must follow the pattern "PlaneShift is _____" followed by a decent justification as a defense.  Your justification should be more than one sentence or as long as it takes to defend your entry, and it shouldn't be any more than a couple of paragraphs.
  • Commenting on entries is allowed, as long as your comments are MEANINGFUL.  We don't care if you agree or disagree with an entry unless you can contribute a new opinion to the discussion.  We are shooting for a thread of high quality; don't taint this thread by writing every other post on it, and no backseat modding either.  Also, this thread is not for writing books.
  • No nonsensical or subjective entries.  Entries must be meaningful and objective, and entry content must be decent enough for people to want to read.
  • Juxtaposition is fine only if you can justify it by providing a rigorous and meaningful comparison.
  • No ambiguous or vague entries; we don't want to confuse people who read this thread with double entendres.  If it can be interpreted in more than one way, then be more specific.  No astroturfing either.
  • For God sakes, don't post anything on here without reading the OP.
  • If there are any good ones then we should consider moving them into the OP to make them easier to find.

The Hydlaa Plaza / Commemorate the Couples made by PlaneShift
« on: July 15, 2009, 01:53:44 pm »
In the past year that I have been apart of the Planeshift community, I've witnessed a number of people become couples through the powerful force of Planeshift. Now I don't know who all they are, and would like the community's help in identifying these couples as a way of showing off the influence that Planeshift has in our offline lives, and thanking the developers for creating this environment.

Now, a few rules:

1) the couples have to be matched through, during or after playing Planeshift.
2) Have met either on the forum, the IRC channel, or through the official Planeshift Client
3) can not have had previous interactions through another medium
4) The couples are either currently dating/living together/or communting back and forth In Real Life

Thanks for your help!

Single Author Stories / The Bladeginning
« on: March 02, 2009, 10:02:44 pm »
Long blades, short blades, skinny blades, fat blades. I held my breath, running my hand across the display, lingering over the wicked looking ones. Glancing around to see if there was anyone near by, I picked up a long, black obsidian dagger, and ran the point across my forearm, testing it. A streak of red ooze appeared, a little at first, then gradually more.  A smile crossed my face as an unknown excitement filled me. Hastily, I placed the dagger back, pulled down my sleeve and quickly left. My knees suddenly went weak and I stumbled against the outer wall, stopping until I could walk again.  The blood seeped through my sleeve, a dark growing stain on the otherwise pristine cloth. Mother, when she saw it, said nothing, but put a poultice on it and sent me back out to play. After all, a six-year old can get into trouble, and it means nothing at all. But that day, I found my first and only true love....

My name is Uinin Yulyna; remember it well.

[This thread is an IC roleplaying thread. Whatever you read should be taken as if it were seen ingame. Please respond to it like a roleplay and keep all OOC either labeled as such or within brackets.]

A woman in eccentric looking garbs walks into the plaza, dressed completely in  a deep hue of purple as she starts to speak to the crowd, "People of Hydlaa. Today I come to teach you about the Powers of Purple. Such a mystic element it is! Violet, the color of wonder, of happiness, of joy, of pleasure and longevity!" She pauses and looks around, then raises her hands, "Come, and hear what I have to say, it will only bring you satisfaction and tranquility!"

The Hydlaa Plaza / The Man who Created A Legend
« on: March 19, 2008, 09:56:59 am »
For those sci-fi buffs out there, the man who wrote 2001: A Space Odyssey has died, at the ripe old age of 90.

taken from an article:

Clarke was the author of The City and the Stars, Childhood's End and 2010, a sequel to A Space Odyssey, which was made into a movie by Stanley Kubrick.

With Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein, he was considered one of the "Big Three" of science fiction.

His fiction predicted space travel before rockets were even test fired and foretold computers wreaking havoc with modern life. Clarke was a lone voice of dissent when the world feared that the Y2K bug would lead to mayhem in 2000.

Clarke was born into a British farm family in Somerset on Dec. 16, 1917

The Prologue of Liadan
â€śOh Liadan, could you lend me at least 10? This hair ribbon can only be found from this vendor,” Lucena begged, holding up the baby-blue ribbon against her hair. “I promise will pay you back.”

Liadan sighed, and handed her money, watching her chance to buy the dagger slip away. Her sister quickly transfered the money to the vendor, who complimented her on her choice, then was distracted by the next possible customer.

Locking arms with Liadan, the younger girl tied the ribbon around her wrist, looking around excitedly, peering through the crowds of people for something else to explore.  Seeing another vendor, she tugged on Liadan’s arm, dragging her over.

The vendor was displaying necklaces, handcrafted chains with large stones and gems set as pendants. Lucena bent over the table, her fingertips brushing over the pendants as she exclaimed over the craftmanship.  Liadan was bored, having no interest in gaudy trinkets and had started to look around when she heard her sister gasp, then felt the tug on her sleeve.

â€śLiadan…”, Lucena started her plea, looking at her with big eyes, holding up the necklace for her inspection.  The necklace itself was not much to look at, but the pendant was the focal point: an opal held in place with fingers of gold, cradling it below the chain.  “Is it not beautiful?” Lucena breathed.

The vendor was quick to notice the interest, and stated, “There are only two, and that is one. You are sisters, no? I will give you both, one for each, for the price of one.” He held up the sister necklace, which was similar to the first.  The words were out of Liadan’s mouth before she knew it, and the vendor quoted a reasonable, but expensive price.

Lucena’s face fell, and she hastily replaced the necklace on the table.  The price was twice that their father earned in a month; not even the beauty of the stone would justify such an expense.

â€śI’ll pay for both, in exchange for this,” said a voice behind the girls, extending a heavily jewelled bronze bowl.   Lucena and Liadan turned around to see their benefactor, and were surprised to see a young man, simply dressed. He winked at them both, saying, “Two beautiful girls should not be deprived of equally wonderful stones.”

Liadan began to protest, but the trade was complete before the words were formed on her lips.  He handed the first to Lucena, then indicated to Liadan to turn around, and clasped the second around her neck.  Standing back, he admired the two with their necklaces, then offered his arms to them, stating his intentions to show them the best that the fair had to offer.

Lucena took his arm without hesitation, but Liadan had a nagging feeling at the back of her mind, but dismissed it, and took the offered arm without any other thought….

The Hydlaa Plaza / darn, been fire-walled!
« on: November 29, 2007, 10:37:48 pm »
Probably not the best part of the forum to post this, but

The school has fire-walled me out of anything that is not web-browser accessed. Which means:

No IRC

No PS

No apple mail.

Why? Because apparently the school's domain (@ cmu.ca) has joined the ranks of the annoying (read: spammer) and has been blacklisted by the IPs in the area.  In an attempt to reticfy this, they have been using scientific method to deduce (read: trial and error) what works and what doesn't.

So i have the internet (for now) just ...can't...play... PS.
* Liadan looks dejected and wanders off to do homework.

EDIT: And no MSN messenger..., and no yahoo...and no....wait... even jabber.

The Hydlaa Plaza / How much of 'you' in 'yours'?
« on: November 27, 2007, 07:16:57 pm »
It's not that complicated, really.

How much of you is in your character(s) in PS?

I'll start:

Liadan: Humour. That's all me there. Same hair, skin and eye colour (both ash brown, pale, with blue/grey eyes).

Remoe: Her attitude adjustment that is desired and tom-boyness is from me.
