Complaint Department / Incommunicado players
« on: August 15, 2015, 07:31:04 pm »
One trend I've noticed lately is that more and more players don't want to have much, if anything, to do with Out of Character communication, especially ingame.  This makes it very hard to do everything from trying to set up and plan RPs (since we simply don't have the encounter density needed for randomly running into people to suffice for keeping plots from stalling out) to simply finding out what people want out of their RP, or even simply building relationships at an inter-player level.

Why is this?  Is this just me, or is this something we need to sit down and have a discussion as a community about?

General Discussion / An apology, for old scars of the past...
« on: July 21, 2015, 07:22:47 pm »
For those of you who...remember my past ways and the non-PG-13 territory they took me, and were in any way made uncomfortable about it:

I'm terribly sorry for making you uncomfortable; it was a tough time for me in some ways, and it was territory that, in hindsight, I shouldn't have ever treaded on to begin with; not that I knew it at the time, though.  Can we move on, and start holding a more open conversation, not just as characters, but as players as well?

General Discussion / RPed combat -- war or sport?
« on: July 04, 2015, 11:20:42 pm »
So, I was reading an article about combat in D&D and was wondering if the core thesis applied to how we RP combat in PS as well, with some players leaning much more strongly towards sport and others much more strongly towards war...or is there some overpowering reason that we should stick to one side of this divide or the other?

Discuss, flame, whatever...

Wish list / Rethinking introductions -- short descriptions for recognition
« on: December 13, 2014, 02:49:47 pm »
The lack of art for clothes, character parameters (height, weight, and such), and other wearables (such as a sword sheathed at one's hip) makes it hard to recognize characters visually -- this meant that the first cut at a /introduce command was doomed to fail.

However, there is a way to implement introductions and character recognition without relying on visual art to distinguish characters; MUDs have been using a short-description based system for ages now.  In this system, each character would have a one-line short description (such as "the tall, gaunt elf") that would substitute for their name both for the purposes of character labels and the chatbox (name highlighting, chat labels) until that character was /introduced to you.  This would allow us to have the extra RP support provided by introductions without the recognition/name-confusion trouble we experienced previously.

PvP,PK and Thieving / Interdiction Mechanics
« on: September 11, 2014, 11:24:43 pm »
The issue with the lack of criminal/bandit/... type characters in PS has been rattling around in my head for quite a while now, and I've come to the conclusion that in order for banditry and other nefarious RP to be able to leave the city walls, it needs one (only one!) mechanic to support it: interdiction.

Such a mechanic would allow a player character to build a non-lethal trap in a certain area that would hinder the movements of everyone that passed through that part of the world (i.e. slow them down to 10% of walking speed, or prevent them from moving for say two to five minutes), but not do any damage on its own.  It would use the existing (albeit unimplemented) "Set Traps" skill, and such traps would require materials to construct as well (say Arangma silk for an entangling trap, or alchemist's glue for something adhesive).

The non-lethal nature of this mechanic -- in other words having it only affect the mobility of victims instead of inflicting damage through falls, poisons, spikes, or explosions -- is needed to prevent an unattended or abandoned trap from being fatal (or at least catastrophically RP-altering) to a character whose player has had no opportunity to consent to the RP that the trap was created for.  Of course, one could RP injurious traps atop this basic mechanic (all you'd need to do is put a book there describing what the trap does RPwise).

These traps would also "wear out" under this proposal, either after a set span has passed, or after a certain number of people have fallen into it.

Thoughts? Further suggestions? Questions? Flames?

General Discussion / Character design, plot design, flaws, and RP
« on: September 08, 2014, 10:19:28 pm »
What types of character flaws do you find work well for generating RP-acceptable conflict?  I'm trying to get a better picture of this, especially considering that the social-interaction flaws I tend to put into some characters (especially my main) turn off RPers more than they ever generate RP.

Also, how should I approach other players regarding designing their plots in such a way that they work better when characters who behave as professionals participate (i.e. those characters that don't make the obvious mistakes the plot initially expects them to)?

General Discussion / Klyran could use some flight, weather, etal jargon
« on: August 17, 2014, 04:12:45 pm »
First off, I'd like to thank everyone who's worked on Klyran so far, it's one of the best-defined IG languages we have, and it's a very nice touch in RP despite being little used, sadly.

*Klimnihafar scratches her headfin for a bit and thinks of how to say "cumulus congestus with moderate turbulence, looks like it'll be a full-grown cumulonimbus in a few hours" in Klyran...

Considering Klyros have wings and at minimum a gliding capability, wouldn't they have words for various flight and weather phenomena (various cloud types, turbulence, precipitation, and winds are a good start as far as weather goes, and aerodynamic stalls, spins, ground effect, wake vortices, and many others will wind up useful for aerodynamics/flight) in their language? Or am I going to have to go in and start adding some to the Wiki; if so, anyone have suggestions as to making Klyran words?

Wish list / Death Realm 2.0
« on: November 22, 2013, 03:21:20 pm »
The current state of the Realm is...a bit underwhelming, to say the least.  I think we all know this, so I'm going to throw a long-term suggestion out there for how it ought to look, drawing some inspiration from my experience in other games.

Specifically, I'm considering a Death Realm that consists of a large handful (a dozen would make a reasonable starting point) of 'chunks' (room-sets, walkway mazes, caverns, and perhaps even some green fields for variety's sake) that are interconnected by (bidirectional) magical portals that are spawned at random (perhaps with a few rules thrown in to keep Londris from flying off the handle when trying to get around the Citadel!).  Exits from the Realm would be subject to the same random spawn system, and 'back door' entrances for Dakkruists could be included, even.  (Or perhaps you could go in the out door?!)

Obviously, these portals would have duration limits, and presumably a limit on how much stuff can be pushed through them as well.  Monsters would be present, of course, with types varying depending on the terrain (caves would have Grendols and Wrathrats, while Carkarasses would be more common in mazelike sections, and greenfields could be home to brand new monster types).

While this'd be quite a bit of art and code (we currently have the material for 3 chunks of DR, and one or two others could be added simply to demonstrate caverns and greenfields, but anything more would require lots of art assets), it'd have the advantage of being truly dynamic without disturbing the shared nature of the world in PS, and would also be expandable as PS grows, without the challenges involved in grafting maps together.

Thoughts? Questions? Ridicule?

(Since my predecessor's response was inadequate, here is my full list of roleplay likes and dislikes.)

Likes:
  • A balance of casual and intense roleplay.
  • Lucid and eloquent writing.
  • Intrigue, diplomacy, and war.
  • Heavy use of religion: it is as important, if not more, in Planeshift than in our world.
  • Earned power.
  • Customs of courteous roleplay behavior.
Dislikes:
  • Characters who roleplay skills at expert level or above in magic AND melee at the same time. It is godmodding.
  • Poor writing.
  • An excess of unearned power.
  • Incorrect roleplay of death. It is a horrific and draining experience.
  • Discourteous attendance to the rules and customs of roleplay.
My apologies for this in the thread, but I feel a couple things need clarification:
First: defined earned/unearned power.  I'm not sure if you're referring to mechanics leveling for combat/magic, or something with RP.

Second: I have never, ever been able to get any sort of consensus on the rules and customs of RP to begin with; nor have I had anyone actually sit down and talk me through what they see the rules and customs as and explain to me how they all work.  Can we start there?

(P.S. the reason I might seem so irredeemable as a godmodder is partly because nobody's ever been able to make the logic of some of of the definitions of godmodding make intuitive sense to me.  As to railroading...well, I expect people to be as stubborn about their characters accomplishing their goals as I am about mine; talk to me OOCly though, and we can usually work something out.)

Complaint Department / (Others) throwing in the towel
« on: October 30, 2013, 01:25:20 pm »
I am posting here because I am sick and tired of other RPers giving up on me and my characters (and making their characters do the same.)  The higher-level (character design/development) aspects of RP have never came particularly naturally to me, and I've had lots of conversations with lots of people that have helped me to get where I am now in that regard.  But I've started to notice a trend...even if I'm trying to step outside the box as it will and RP something different, I have to pull teeth to get others to participate, or simply won't get any interest whatsoever.  Worse yet, I feel like other players simply make their characters fold up on me in combat RP much of the time, and its to the point now where some players refuse to speak with me at all!

Where is the investment and effort from others into their character's behavior (especially in combat)? Why are people giving up on me?  Throwing in the towel doesn't help me do anything better!

In-Game Roleplay Events / [RP] Interference Patterns
« on: October 13, 2013, 12:51:14 am »
[OOC: this happened a little while ago, decided to start a thread for it now though to pull more folks in \o/]
1.  A False Start

"It is in the interplay between light and darkness, the fringes of shadow, where opportunity lies"

As the two klyros handled their introductions on the plaza, the much larger Ynnwn ranger loomed overhead with a wave and a slightly worn-out greeting, having just returned from a hunt frustrated by the rats' fever that had become a frequent nuisance in the sewers.  This quickly turned into a brief interlude as she went to fetch one of her own, self-made antidotes from where she had stashed the massive batch.

After returning a vial of potion later to a curious questioning about the arcane arts...the discussion quickly provided an opportunity for Kaerli to ask one of the Klyros to step aside afterwards.  With the self-imposed parting of the other Klyros due to his own drunken ramblings, it was not long before Kaerli and Zerxzz had staked out a small area on Highwatch for a minor conversation about the Dark Way.

The ranger opened with a simple inquiry of familiarity, "You know how the sewers have all those Toxic Grendols in them, right?" to which the Klyros responded with a nod...

In the end, the conversation proved fruitless, the Klyros dark mage's suggestion that a master alchemist be consulted having gone unheeded.  Would it come back to haunt the ranger later as she pursued how to make light out of darkness, darkness out of light?

General Discussion / Re: Ideas for Events
« on: August 31, 2013, 05:08:01 pm »
One thing with the CavernBelly event: Kaerli has been known to feed people whole Ulbers before (besides: the main character you describe exists, he's called Celrau and is a little Consumer in a fur coat!)

Is there something people with extremely flaky/touchy internet connections can do to stay connected to PS better? It seems quite intolerant of any interruption in the network.

In-Game Roleplay Events / The Darkness Rises Again...
« on: August 05, 2013, 04:48:51 pm »
A masked Dermorian uses a rusty old dagger to pin a neatly penned note to a bookcase in a hidden temple beneath Hydlaa.

It reads:
Quote
I am seeking an assistant for a takedown-and-capture operation against a difficult and high-value target.

Requirements for this job include:
* Being able to recruit strong, skilled fighters to our cause, as we will need their aid to bring our target down.
* Great physical strength, or a trusted friend with the same.
* Knowledge of the caravans that travel between Hydlaa and Ojaveda.  If you know a wagon driver, that is a major asset.
* A willingness to be the 'fall guy' if caught.  The target cannot know about my involvement if this plan fails!
* The ability to obtain supplies from the surface, as needed during later phases of the operation.  This includes enchanted artifacts and other specialized supplies.  Knowing a strong Dark or Azure mage who does not have compunctions against the use of his artifacts for our purposes is helpful in this cause, as well.
* A knowledge of torture techniques is a plus.

If you can aid me in this matter, please leave a note here, below this one.
and is signed in an illegible scrawl.   He then walks off, smirking to himself beneath his mask. "Soon, the true powers of Yliakum will be revealed..."

((OOC: This won't be for the faint of heart, or for those who can't read the note ingame, although creating an alt for the purposes of this plot is acceptable.  A posting here will be accepted if followed up with an ingame note left as per the IC instructions.  Also, a familiarity with RPing shady figures will be expected; I would not consider this plot suitable for someone's very first try at a baddie of any flavor.))
