I've been away from PlaneShift for almost a year now, how's the game coming along?

Here's what I've been doing the past half year XD

Ok, so I just got my brand new ultra-powerful gaming PC set up, spend some time playing HL2 and gmod, then decided I should go put some work into Planeshift because I've been absent quite a while due to not having a PC capable of running the game. I found my old 0.4.03 installer, seems fine, then when I try to start updater, client, or setup, I get:

"This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."

So I reinstalled once from that same old installer, same problem. I downloaded a brand new one from the PS website, same problem.

Here are my new specs, just in case it matters.

Guilds Forum / The College of Mages
« on: January 23, 2009, 10:29:12 pm »
 :sorcerer:

*found on a poster in Jayose's Library*

My name is Nhil Sould. As a part of my sales pitch to the Octarchal Society for Progress, I am looking for people to form the running staff of what, with the Octarchy's go-ahead, will become the official College of Mages in Yliakum. Imagine, a centralized institute of magical learning, that would put an end to the shoddy freelance training that is all we have at the moment, a grand repository of all magical knowledge, areas for training and practice, and shops full of magical merchandise.

If we win the Society's competition, we will be able to acquire funding and premises to form the most grand College under the dome. But alas, I cannot do it alone. I need active community members, skilled mages, and [dedicated RPers] to aid in planning and in the final presentation to the Jury - if we make it that far.

If you are interested, leave a note addressed to me with our dear Allelia, with a time and place to contact you. [aka just send me a /tell]

[As far as game mechanics are concerned, this is not a 'guild' and there is no requirement that you leave your current guild in order to join. I myself have no intention of leaving the 'mongers for this ;) ]

General Discussion / Death of an Atheist
« on: January 04, 2009, 08:02:44 pm »
Ok, in another thread which was later locked for an unrelated reason, I mentioned that when an Atheist dies, it is permadeath, though this is not reflected in-game yet because there is no effects of religion programming.

I got replies along the lines of "This is complete nonsense. Seriously dude."

For my next trick, I would like to bring your attention to a rather nice book - "The Four Revelations of Dakkru" by Londris Kolaim. You can find this book, along with a few others, in your local hell.

And I quote - 'Three. We gods shall no longer spare the faithless; you who do not revere a deity or follow a sacred path, you shall have no succor, and you will be folded into Me as your spirit shrivels. All who die the true death are Yliakum's gifts to Me.'

The books also details the nature of Dakkru's curse - that a small part of you is taken away in order to power the black crystal.

I had previously assumed that Revelation 3. meant that when an atheist dies, they are taken entirely into Dakkru / the black crystal and are thus denied resurrection or probably not even capable of it when the entirety of their 'life essence' has been taken away.

We will now open this to discussion, and hopefully some input from the settings team :)

General Discussion / Planeshift FFFFFrUUUUUUUstration thread
« on: December 05, 2008, 02:09:46 pm »
It occured to me that this would be win just now on IRC when a possible reason for the server being down was discussed.

Think of your own, draw em and post em  \\o//  ;D

In case you're not familiar with how this works, you think up the first 3 frames but always use the exact same 4th frame

Wish list / need huge capacity storage
« on: December 03, 2008, 12:15:39 am »
Ok, I realize the idea behind this is to avoid having tiny sacks that contain 20 claymores, and it works well on that level.

The problem is that objects such as closets and chests that only have around 50 capacity. I think, spatially, I could easily fit 30-40 sabres into one of those closets, but because of the low capacity limit the number is 5.

Because of this, the Dark Warmongers guildhouse has 100+ items lying around in it, and most of them are sacks/boxes/cabinets containing the hundreds upon hundreds of good items we find. I don't need to tell you how much the framerate drops just by entering the house. What we really need are (in the guildhouses at least) some way of efficiently storing all our things. Moving items into sacks, while resulting in a 1/3 drop in number of objects, doesn't really manage to help. If we had about 10 cabinets with a quite realistic 300 or 500 capacity, life would be so much better.

Ok, I just tried to log in to PS for the first time in a week (been busy, heh) and I get the client out of date - run updater message, so I thought "Woo, 4.03, go devs." Yet my updater says I'm up to date.

I looked in psupdater.cfg and the only thing it says is

"
Update.Clean = true

"

And here is a copy of my updaterinfo.xml

Complaint Department / mana regen is far too slow
« on: October 29, 2008, 08:03:42 am »
Ok, statistics to back it up. I have all maxed stats, so my mana bar is maxed at 222 points (oddly low I've always thought, seeing as HP max is 800 and both stam max is 1000) and I'd always thought the mana bar filled up far too slowly, but this time I went and depleted my mana down to 2% and timed the regen back up to 100%

It took 18 minutes.

Some of you may think "Ok, 18 minutes isn't THAT long" but now I challenge you to go get a stopwatch, and sit in a chair and do nothing but stare at the stopwatch as it counts down those 18 minutes. See how bored you get.

Wish list / flat stairs/ladders
« on: October 20, 2008, 08:47:33 pm »
The problem with stairs and ladders is that you have individually created each step, with gaps in between. It would not only be easier, but also a lot more convenient, if you changed it so that the actual thing the character runs up is a completely flat surface that is just rendered with see-through parts for gaps between stairs. In BD, the ladders to get to the mine area cause you to have to switch run mode on and try an jump from rung to rung. Replace it with a steep, flat surface with coded to allow players to walk on it despite the steep incline, paint the texture with invisible parts and there you go, problem solved

General Discussion / Interesting weapon

Behold my power as I bash you with my..... helm

Interesting bug with the "Mercenary Helm" which is the one without any horns.

On a side note, are there any light armor helms in PS? I went after this one thinking it would be light armor but no, medium like the rest.

Wish list / Parties: necessary & worthwhile
« on: October 08, 2008, 04:07:43 pm »
It seems to me that in just about every mmorpg I;ve played, the party system was horribly underused. Why? Because the simple equation of "less xp per kill + more people kill more mobs faster = good xp" rarely, if ever, results in getting more by the end of the day.

Now it seems to me that if we had a party system that gave a significant + to everyone in the group, it would promote two things.

1. People spamming with "LFG! LFG!"

2. The real RPers having a good reason to spend more time hanging around in the tavern RPing and waiting for people to show up and form a hunting pary

I used to play in a NWN server that was heavily focused on D&D RP, and the thing was that a) it was literally impossible for a lowbie to survive even the weakest goblin and b) the death penalty was so severe, no one dared go out alone. This led to one of the best RP communities I have ever seen, brought out by the necessity of team play.

Now I am not suggesting make it that severe, but just make it a much better option to work as a group in all things and it'll do wonders for the in-game community

General Discussion / Realism
« on: September 29, 2008, 04:04:29 am »
Ok, seeing as neko locked my other thread in wish list, and the thread he linked to was ALSO locked, and thus there was no open place to discuss it, I had to make a new thread just to raise this one little thing. I figure it's more a comment then an actual request so it should go in general rather then wish list.

One of our favorite words in an RP MMO is 'realistic' and this was in issue raised in that 'Jump skill" thread, so I thought I'd show you the real life equivalent of some people who have leveled their jump skill to 100. ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEeqHj3Nj2c

Note that every one of these is done without special effects, ropes, or harnesses.

Now you can't say that people flying up walls and leaping from building to building would be unrealistic ;P

Wish list / Event Calendar
« on: September 23, 2008, 02:20:46 am »
What I would really like to see for this game is an event calendar.

Much like this one here http://lastchaos.aeriagames.com/events/cosponsorshipEvents

Because the fact is, GM-led events seem to be rare in this game, such so that I have never been in one, and only twice actually met a GM in game. So it would really help people to know when to show up for the RP fests if we have a little flash code or whatever is suitable calendar that shows where you are now, what's happened in the last week or so, and what's planned to happen. It would kick even more ass if you could make it automatically convert to local time from your computer clock.
