Game freezes up my computer.

Several months ago, I tried playing PlaneShift, but it made my computer freeze up, so I uninstalled it and forgot about it. I recently remembered it and decided to give it another try. I downloaded the new version of PlaneShift (0.3.018) and installed it. I never ran the updater.(I didn't run the updater because I saw a post that said you shouldn't run the updater for the new version yet) It loads up fine and runs fine for at least 15 minutes and then my computer freezes up and the only thing I can do is hit the reset button on my computer. I had quit most of the programs that run in the background on my computer. I monitored the CPU usage while I was playing and it was at 100% some of the time, but not all of the time and it wasn't at 100% when my computer froze. This problem has baffled me and I have no clue what's causing it.

Here are my specs:

Windows XP
512 MB RAM
Radeon 9600 series video card
1.3 GHz processor
Charter High-Speed internet

While not maybe the final cause, that 100% cpu usage that is reached, might be related to your issue.

For those cases, I always recommend the following:

"When in game go to options->graphics->details: see fps cap; lower its value.
Put it at 25 or so, just a number around it that you like but not as big as the one you'll see as default."

That should drop the cpu usage while you not percieving any noticeable difference in your gameplay. Just give it a try.

and dont forget the "vortex buffering" on "on" in the settup

Let me get this straight.  Lowering the graphics setting would fix the cpu problem.  Look at this:



Are the developers sure there isn't a memory leak somewhere.

Not fully worried though.  Planeshift is a work in progress after all.  I will do as suggested.  I have never seen a program eat that much CPU and RAM though.

@Okim  You might want to try shuting down all the extra stuff running on your system. You dont need a lot of that stuff running while playing any game.

i have 70 somthing proccesses running most the time but i dont know what most of them are so i tend to leave them alone.

Narure, a simple but time consuming and borring fix for that is to search each proccess. write down what each one is, then you can shut them down when desired without the fear of messing with your OS.
