I tried various reddy pinky veiny effects, most of them made her look stoned like she had been up for 3 days.

heh, yeah it did. I cleaned up the iris image as the edges were being refracted by the cornea and giving the impression of a contact lens. If you are interested, the eye model is composed of 2 parts: an eyeball (containing the iris) and a cornea. The cornea covers the eyeball. It is transparent and refracts the light, it also produces the shine. You can see the bump on the un-rendered model:
