Forum and Website Discussions / No link from forum to main page?
« on: April 17, 2015, 11:45:58 am »
The main page links to the forum. But it does not go the other way. At least not that I can find. Would be nice if people who find PS through the forums are also pointed to the other site.

The Hydlaa Plaza / free student's version for autodesk products
« on: March 10, 2013, 05:07:00 am »
Hi all,

a collegue alerted me to this:
http://students.autodesk.com/?nd=download_center&tagent=try-web-LV-10-15-2012

I didn't try myself, but according to him, a student's ID is not required, only a registration by email. I also don't know how the licensing works for the "results" you produce.

But in any case, I thought that Maya and 3ds Max for free might interest some of you.  :)

Best,
Minks

The Raid

08.12.2011
I blame this dream I had last night on the persistent withdrawal from PlaneShift, it's been more then one year since I haven't been able to really play.
Fast-forward the world of PS a few thousand years. And things have not been going so well. (The concept of the closed indoors-city was stolen from Isaac Asimov.)

Despite the week-long preparations and planning, it took us three days and nights to pass the outer security zones undetected. In Zone 3, we were able to find the forgotten tunnel that the scouts had reported and that would lead us hidden underground to the hull of the City. The door at the end of the tunnel was unguarded and surprisingly easy to open. When we finally entered the City, we were almost drunken with excitation and pride. We did it! We would be the first to turn the tables and raid them for a change! Of course we knew that three half-starved figures, dressed in dirty rags with bags on their shoulders could hardly be called a raid. But it was a start.

The Inside wasn't what we expected. Instead of the bright warm and luxurious protected spaces that we had dreamed of, we found cold, dark, and dirty metal hallways. But it was protected from the Outside, which was already a big improvement. The halls and rooms were big and high, way bigger than necessary for people. Maybe they didn't actually live down here and just used the space to move their big machines around. We could hear the constant humming and thumping from somewhere else in the complex. With the silent grace inborn to our race, we crept forward, communicating only with signs.  Luckily, the area seemed to be deserted, but not since long. My pack mates, Shurrim and Haraun, paid little attention to the small items left behind by the previous owners that I pilfered here and there and stowed in my sack. As Protectors, they had their eyes on the bigger things. Enemies in the area, building material, wood or coal, large prey, maybe even a safe place to hide during the next ash storm. Me, the Gatherer, I was responsible for the details. A pawful of half-eaten food, a ragged shirt, small pieces of wire and plastic, every little thing could make the difference between life and death for the pack in these days.

After a while, the air became warmer,  moister and smelled more alive. Shurrim was getting more and more nervous. “Smell danger.” A few minutes later, we all could smell it. Something big. Something we had never smelled before. But all those city smells were so different from what we knew, how could we even begin to guess what it was? And at the same time, also the good smells became stronger and we really needed to find some food. And who knew if we would ever again make it this far into the City unnoticed, so we carefully moved forward.  We entered one of the side rooms that emitted a particularly inviting smell of warm, clean earth. The room was divided by a glass wall. Behind it was a brightly lit space, filled with all sorts of plants. Food. Not meat, but edible. Shurrim picked the lock and we closed the door silently behind us after entering. She was now constantly growling quietly; I could feel the vibrations in my naked paws on the metal floor. Danger was close, so we hurried to scan the plant room. I was just about to grab some half-ripe turnips when we heard a loud crash. Something was on the other side of the glass! It was big, really big and dark. Giant claws scratched along what we now realized was not glass after all. Real glass would have broken instantly, not just cracked. The thing threw itself against the not-glass. It had smelled prey – us. Haraun ordered me to hide in the back of the room in the bushes and then went to stand on Shurrim's side, facing the beast. The next crash broke a hole in the door and a long, brown-furred arm stretched inside. The stench was now almost unbearable. I tried to think positive, of the massive amount of meat that we would bring home. But seeing the three claws on the arm, each of them almost as long as one of my legs, I knew it would not happen this way. We were the prey today, not the hunters. I stayed in my hiding place as ordered, but I gripped my knife tightly. The beast would have a scar to remember me, I vowed. By now, the upper half of the door was out of the way, the moment we would join our ancestors in the Old World was close.

...

And then, the beast was gone. Just like that. The stench was still there, but the Hunter wasn't. Then, footsteps. Boots. And a voice. “Who's there?”. It was an unforgivable mistake. But in our surprise about still being alive, we hadn't heard the man until he was standing right in front of the broken door. Shurrim and Haraun barely had time to move into the shadows on the next wall. But it was not a good hiding place.

The man hit on the shards in the door frame with his weapon until they fell down. “Bloody thieves, show yourselves!” He stepped over the rubble and became fully visible. He stood almost two heads taller than Haraun and looked as if he weighted at least three times as much. His clothes were different from those people who would regularly raid our territory in the Wastelands and hunt us like animals. But around him was the same tell-tale shimmer of the magical shields that stunned or even killed everyone trying to touch them. Without it, we could have easily overpowered him. But with the shield, we  knew it was useless to even try. All we could do was to hold our breath and pray. With my bright red fur out of sight, we maybe stood a tiny chance. Shurrim and Haraun held themselves as straight as possible. In black fur and grey robes, they could be mistaken as dark-skinned elves or humans, at least if they stayed in the shadow. Just a few seconds of confusion would be enough for us to escape. But the gods were not with us. The man held his portable flame-less light right into Haraun's face. He stumbled back and lifted his rifle. “What in Laanx's name are you?!”

The End for now. Don't ask me how it how happened that the Enkidukai live outside in the Wastelands and the other races in the City. Or why the Humans don't know them anymore. Or what happened to Yliakum that they are all now on the surface of the planet or why it is apparently very uncomfortable out there. Or if there are still Klyros and Kran somewhere. I don't know. But I have some ideas about what will happen after our three raiders were detected. Maybe I'll write some other snippets down one day.

A little birdy twittered me this:

Sorry. no idea if or in which binary releases the spellchecker is included...but in case it works with the new version here a short instruction how to use it:

First you will need a dictionary. You can use the openOffice.org dicts for that. Either get one here or just use the en_US one. Now go in your PlaneShift installation directory to the "data" directory and create a new "dict" folder. In that new folder unzip the dictionary (spellchecker looks for planeshift/data/dict/<dict>.dic and planeshift/data/dict/<dict>.aff).

Now you only have to enable the spellchecker in the PS config. To do this go to your configuration directory (linux: "~/.PlaneShift", Windows: "%AppData%\PlaneShift", MacOs: "~/Library/Application Support/PlaneShift") and change there to the "options"-folder. Now open chat.xml in your favorite text editor and edit the "<spellChecker value="0" r="255" g="0" b="0" />" line. Change it to "<spellChecker value="1" r="255" g="0" b="0" />" and the spellchecker should be enabled. With r, g, b values you can define in which color typos are displayed..standard is red but might be useful to change that on non-default skins. After saving the files and restarting PS you should get all typos you make in the input line printed in a different color.

A bit more about the way PS loads dictionaries. PS will look for all available dictionaries in the "data/dict" path and load them...and then use all of them. Meaning if you put an English and a German dictionary there only words that are not recognized by either of them will be shown as errors. So be careful with this as some typos in English might get ignored because there is a matching German word. But this allows something else. You can create a simple dictionary on your own containing some words only known in PS. For that just create a text file like "PSwords.dict" in the "data/dict" folder. Put all words you want the spellchecker to recognize in a separate line of that file...and afterwards count how many words you put in the file, go to the first line and put that number there. Make sure that your dictionary is sorted alphabetically.
Example:
Code: [Select]
4
Gugrontid
Hydlaa
Octarch
Ojaveda
Now it's also important to create a empty "PSwords.aff" file. Afterwards restart PS and this newly created dictionary will be used also.

Oh..and just because I mentioned it before...If you use non-default skins those have to be updated in order to work with the spellchecker (at least if they alter the appearance of the chat window). The type of the Inputline changed from "pawsEditTextBox" to "pawsSpellCheckedEditBox". If the skin is not updated PS won't start. This applies for everyone even if the spellchecker is not enabled.

Forum and Website Discussions / Spam bots

Hi, there.
What's with the spam bot attacks here lately? Did some forum configuration get changed or did they just get smarter?

Forum and Website Discussions / Stalking function
« on: August 27, 2010, 08:05:55 am »
Hi guys, girls and  gemmas.

Currently, the forum allows me to check who of the logged-in users is reading which topic. I don't think that's any of my
business.   ::|
It once happened to (years ago) me that I got a rather creepy PM about "having read my story, how did you like it, lets be friends."
To my shame I must admit that I just recently learned, how they knew I was on that topic, even it it was just for a few
seconds (I didn't read it, I mis-clicked.)

I'd really like to see that function being turned off.  :)

Best,
Minks

Good Morning / Midday / Night!

I have set the min and max transparencies in my chat window both to zero. In planeshift. cfg, I find
Code: [Select]
PlaneShift.GUI.ChatWindow.MinTransparency = 0
PlaneShift.GUI.ChatWindow.MaxTransparency = 0

But still, my chat window is more than a little transparent which makes reading the text pretty hard.

Any bright ideas?  :)

General Discussion / Hydlaa Costume Party
« on: November 01, 2009, 03:09:14 am »
It seems the powers that be heard about a custom celebrated occasionaly in strange lands
and decided to adapt it.
Yesterday, Vejah Dukai gave out free custom made constumes to everyone who wished.
Soon, the plaza was a colorful zoo filled with clackers, ulbernauts, pets and many
other races. Most popular were carcasses and tlokes. But also a few kormi and even
a grendol were spottedl. Thankfully, this costume ony copied the look and not the smell.

And me? I got to play with my new friends.  :woot:

Thank you, Vejah!

Wish list / Avoid accidental pickup of items.
« on: May 10, 2008, 12:05:42 pm »
Hey folks,

I'd like to be able to *lock* an item on the ground, i.e. prohibiting accidental pickup. (Of
course, un-locking should then also be possible.) This could maybe be implemented with
a simple dialogue bow: "Do you really want to pickup $target?"

Why? Because I just picked up my fully stocked kitchen shelves...again  X-/.

Hi there,

The update apparently caused me to loose my eyesight  X-/
Maps that were fine on a private test server or Laanx: NPCroom/NPCroom2, ojaroad1, guildlaw.
Garbled maps so far: hydlaa_plaza, akkaio
(didn't test the rest yet)

Here is what I see of Hydlaa_plaza, quite romantic, but not very informative  :P

My system specs: WinXP pro on Intel Pentium 1.73GHz, 1GB RAM, Graphicscard ATI Radeon Mobile X700 with 128 MB.

What I did so far: Updated Graphics driver, re-downloaded and installed client (clean) and lowered resolution to decrease RAM usage. -fullbright on/of, relight hydlaa_plaza

Any ideas?

Best, Minks

*** edit ***

Thanks for all your help. For some reasons I had to uninstall all graphics drivers down to plain vga before installing the new one.

General Discussion / Question for the team: Is this a spoiler?
« on: June 30, 2007, 06:39:35 am »
Dear PlaneShift team,

The Scholar's order of the Felines Lair and  our library are finally active again. As a member of said order,
I would like to post a library index on our (public) guild forum. It would contain the titles and authors of
books that can be found ingame, no contents or where they can be found (This information will be available
only for guild members via pm).

I don't know how far the books are involved in quests, hence my question: Would such a list be acceptable
or considered as violation of the spoiler policy?

Best,
Minks

Edit: Hmm, seems noone cares...allright, I'll take that as a green light then. Forum of the Felines Lair: http://flare.slyip.com/forums/

I don't want to be a pain, as this is really a minor bug.
But has anyone also noticed that all Fenkis now have Rabani arms and feet?
I figured out that all three textures are in my "art/character/enkif" folder, but I don't
know how to "activate" them.

General Discussion / Tail armor?
« on: November 18, 2006, 10:33:42 am »
You all know the rat plague in Ojaveda. When I go hunting them, I often encounter more than one. While I have good control of the rat in front of me, the second one behind me keeps biting my tail, ouch!

What do you think, do Enkis curl up their tail inside their armor or are they too proud to do so and prefer to take the risk?

In-Game Roleplay Events / Ojaveda Message Board
« on: November 09, 2006, 03:25:56 pm »
Edited by Cha0s: Yea, I should have put this up myself... well, thanks to Minks! :) Now, I hope you don't mind, but I'm hijacking your post for a rules explanation. ;)

[Any in-character messages may be put up here. This message board is in Ojaveda, so if your character visits Ojaveda, it is safe to assume that he/she saw these messages. Note that authorities may remove out-dated messages (about a month in real-time) or ones they find offensive (so don't be surprised if a message disappears). When a message you have posted becomes irrelevant or outdated, please remove it (i.e. edit it and replace it with "[Removed]" ). This is a good place to post announcements about tournaments, wanted criminals, meetings, and anything else you might think of. Just keep it in-character (out-of-character announcements will be deleted). If you need to announce out-of-character information as well as in-character information, I suggest you post the in-character here and make a new thread in this forum for the out-of-character. If your message is not anonymous, remember to include your character's name. Now, go ahead, post those messages!]

[This thread is not for character-to-character interaction, unless you are posting public notices that are directed at a specific individual, and that individual is replying with another notice. This is a strange thing to do, but boards are free until someone cleans them up. Do not do your roleplaying in this thread. ]
