ligh, i don't know how to communicate to the forum software well enough to ask it to only display a thumbnail, or any smaller size version. I can shrink the original linked image on the hosting site, but that would only result in jpeg artifacts, which are already visible because i've already done that once. Any help you can offer is appreciated.

Many image hosters may have generated a thumbnail already after uploading the image. The trick is to use the links of both images: Use the URL of the thumbnail in the IMG tag, and wrap the URL of the full size image around it.

Code: [Select]
[url=http://imagehoster.com/original.jpg][img]http://imagehoster.com/thumbnail.jpg[/img][/url]
If they don't offer a thumbnail on their own, or you believe the thumbnail is too small to see anything, you may have to upload two images: The original and a smaller copy, resized and possibly tighter compressed.

Here an example: (Quote this reply to see my used code)

I am not yet that old, and neither that desperate. It's Woody Allen. Dynamically Auto-Painted.

That's one reason why I find http://psps.psde.de/ so convenient to use... when you upload a picture, it displays a line of text for you to copy-paste in a forum, which will do exactly what LigH explained.
