Wish list / Re: Resurrect the PVP Zones
« on: March 13, 2016, 02:05:13 pm »
To integrate role play with PvP fighting, one needs to consider the motivation of characters who fight. In my (admittedly limited) experience with PlaneShift, there are four basic character motivations:
1) Characters are evil, demented or perverse (eg: Kisoji)
2) Characters have some kind of grudge against each other, not resolvable diplomatically, so they have to fight.
3) Characters are gladiator types, either forced into an arena or who enter voluntarily for glory and fame.
4) In Character political, financial or social machinations lead one character to feel the need to eliminate another character.

In addition to considering motivation, I would also like to remind everyone that PS does only have dozens of players, rather than hundreds, and producing areas attractive to veterans that are obscure, distant or hidden from new players only adds to the sense that Hydlaa is a ghost town.

I suggest considering the plaza up by Amidison Stronghand's house as a PVP area, if one is implemented in Hydlaa. I'd suggest boundaries in the center of the plaza, leaving a strip near the buildings where it is safe, so access to guild houses and NPCs is maintained, and so people could come to watch any fighting from relative safety. This plaza seems to be where the local old families live, and over time old families develop grudges with each other (think Montagues and Capulets). Also, the Boralises work nearby but outside the plaza, and could warn people that it is a dangerous area, as could Amidison herself, as she progresses around town. In addition, the statue of Yllian/Enkiduki amity in the plaza is a nice ironic touch.

In-Game Roleplay Events / Re: First opening of The Whispering Emerald
« on: February 13, 2016, 06:09:32 pm »
We decided, talking between ourselves, to open the new location on Friday. I told two or three people about it. With no other advertising, almost half of the players on-line showed up for our first opening on Friday. I think it was a great success, and it will only get better in the future.

To those people who lobbied the Otarchy to take the Red Crystal Den away from Damola so they could 'tend bar'... well, the opportunity was there all along. Am I bitter about that? Yes I am. Am I moving on? Yes, that too.

See you at the Whispering Crystal next time.

I did not intend to belittle the efforts of people to get the Octarchy to do something for the folks of Ylliakum, like establishing the hospital in Amdenier. My point in bringing it up was this: while those eight characters were role-playing in the hospital in Amdenier last night, they were unavailable to play with any new players who happened to enter the city at the North Gate.

I have not talked to many new players, but I have talked to a few. None of them mentioned the graphics. Most of them wondered if there is anyone around to play with. If 90% of arrivals leave because the graphics are unsatisfactory, that still leaves 350 new characters per year, according to statistics published on the teamix page. Even if 2/3s of them are alts for existing players, that still leaves over 100 new players that did not stick around for reasons other than graphics quality. Since we can't really do anything about the quality of the graphics (been 'rough' for a decade...) then we might want to think about why the 10% are also bailing.

Would it be worthwhile to get even 1/2 of those 100+ looky-loos to turn into regular players over the course of a year? If they come here for role-play, which is, after all, how the game is advertised, then wouldn't it make sense to offer them some role play right away?

Hydlaa is a ghost town because players who are on-line are somewhere else in Ylliakum.

I should say the Hospital in Amdenier is 'working well' if the goal is to provide a few active characters a venue well away from the rest of Ylliakum to play in.

However, as more and more of these new venues are developed and attract veteran players into isolated penny-packets, the more Hydlaa and Hydlaa East become a ghost town.

Plane Shift tries to present itself as a role-playing game, but with no one to role-play with, new comers are often left to wander aimlessly looking for some non-NPC character to talk to. The only characters around are a smith or two grinding at Harnquist's, a couple of characters grinding away at the training dummies, and the occasional streaker running across the plaza in pursuit of finishing some quest. Crafters, stat grinders and characters running around on quests are not known for stopping their activities to role-play with passers by.

I know this post is suppose to be about the 'Future of the RCD' but quite frankly, the future of PS is connected. Is the Octarchy about encouraging player participation and attracting new players to stay, or is it about desperately attempting to keep veterans happy so they don't leave?

By the way, this wasn't an eviction of the RCD. This was an eviction of Damola, Waesed, Sulaika and other characters who cooked or tended bar or entertained at the Den. An eviction of people who put their thought and effort and time into developing the venue and hosting events. You don't evict property, you evict tenants. Trying to frame this action as something done against the building seems an attempt to sweep under the rug the real damage done to those characters and their players.

Guides and Tutorials / Importing music into PlaneShift music scrolls
« on: October 22, 2015, 12:20:47 pm »
Hello, I'm new here. I read the other thread on "How to use an external music editor" and followed it as best I could, but when the time came to load my converted file into PlaneShift, the music scroll came up blank, and then PlaneShift crashed.

If there is anyone who has some experience successfully importing XML music files into PlaneShift music scrolls, I'd like to talk to them. If you need any technical details, please let me know, and I'll provide them.

I created an XML file using Finale Note Pad, key of C, 4/4 time, acoustic guitar, 90 bpm, 24 measures, of some public domain renaissance music. I converted the exported XML file using firiban's converter.

I pasted the converted file into a PlaneShift music scroll XML file.

Then I went into PlaneShift, opened the music scroll (it was blank) and attempted to LOAD the XML file. The scroll remained blank. Then I crashed.
