The Hydlaa Plaza / knock knock
« on: July 13, 2019, 01:47:02 pm »
Usually I'd stop at the tavern first. I knocked at the door but the place was apparently closed, it's been for ... yikes! so long? Hm.
So I walked past it and went straight here instead, hopefully there are a few familiar faces. There are definitely friendly faces, I'm sure, it's always worth stopping by.

And yet, so many travels, such long journeys. So, yeah, time has passed since I last stopped by. Again. But I do recognize the place, even if bits have changed here and there. New buildings, missing crystals.

So glad to see Hydlaa Plaza is still there, so relieved there's still a home to come back to!

Now let's see if the ale still tastes the same...

Hey friends, how are y'all doing?  ;)

Hello!

I have some troubles finding my way back to Hydlaa, hopefully a good soul can help me ;)

Running the last updated version (32-bit PlaneShift Azure Spirit (0.6.1)), on a Win7 x64 desktop PC, with the latest nVidia drivers (340.52) on a GTX 780. The character screen loads and runs correctly, but when I click on 'Join' and as soon as the world is rendered, the client crashes. When it does, the world and my character seem correctly rendered.

This is a new account, new character, and a fresh install of the client. Apparently my old character is "in reserved database", so ... :D It's been a while, so I have no point of reference with this hardware or a recent client regarding Planeshift (other games have run without trouble).

Here is a pastebin of the errorlog.txt, and a dump of the stdout/stderr - I ran it from MinGW to get it, but the same error occurs when it's launched from the menu.

The options are the default ones (no weather and so on). I tried a few things without any success:
- disabling the audio
- using OpenAL for the audio (saw an old post about it)
- using the software renderer, but that didn't go very far, perhaps I didn't do it correctly (System.Plugins.iGraphics3D = crystalspace.graphics3d.software in psclient.cfg)
- full screen / windowed mode

Any clues?

Thanks for any help you can provide! :)

Since I didn't see any report in the bug tracker about this, I wonder if that happened to anyone else.

I did an update using 1.1.0.0, and since the new client crashed I had a look at this, and promptly updated the updater ;)

However, I got this:

I suppose that a fresh installation will do the trick, it's been a while anyway.

PS: Nice new forums, congrats on the move!

Guilds Forum / Ordo Illuminatis
« on: October 15, 2005, 09:54:20 am »
Cad threw a last glance at the building and its surroundings, it was that time of the day when the light of the crystal was quickly losing strength, colours were beginning to fade and mix into each other. A little bit like on postcards, one could wonder whether this place ever existed at all or if it was only a picture. Finally, he pushed the gates shut and turned the key to lock them. It made a reassuring clanging sound that reverberated in the heavy metallic structure, as if to say \"I\'ll keep that secured until someone returns.\"

The guild members had progressively found themselves scattered across several levels, several societies, where they were now using the built up knowledge to help others and transmit it to them. The purpose of the guild was achieved, though not quite the way they originally expected. \"Who knows? Maybe once they are not needed there anymore, they will gather again and go on,\" he thought.

But until then, Ordo Illuminatis would be no more.

[OOC] The guild has been pretty much inactive for months now, some people just vanished, some got too busy to the point they could only pay short and irregular visits, and others simply lost interest in Planeshift.

It\'s life and there is nothing wrong with it, but pretending to still exist wasn\'t making sense anymore for the guild. No one else was ready to take over, and for my part I\'m too busy and not motivated by being part of this world anymore, let alone putting life back into a dormant guild. At least not currently, we\'ll see what the future is made of.

For those who wonder who the hell we are, the website is still up for a while here ;)

If any former member desperately needs to have a last look at the forums, you know how to get in touch with me.

It has been a fun and exciting experience, thanks to all for that! Farewell, and take care in your travels :)

Guilds Forum / Kada-El's Tavern: Call for Guilds
« on: July 27, 2005, 03:06:56 pm »
As a first move to make sure it was up to date, we have recently checked the guilds that were on the list of Kada-El\'s tavern. A few of them were gently shown the gate to the graveyard, a place of oblivion or eternal memory depending on your point of view. Unfortunate but death is the only sure promise of life, isn\'t it?

Now we move on to the fun part, and are looking for the worthy guilds of the realm that could be added to the list.

It is no simple task, and to help us in our quest we have set a few basic requirements that will allow us to sort out the candidates. While we will be somewhat flexible, we will try to stick to them as much as possible in order to get a meaningful result. They are nothing more than what you would expect from a guild, should you want to join one - which is indeed the main purpose of this list.

These conditions are necessary but not sufficient. We will inspect more carefully the guilds which passed the test before adding them, using all sorts of torture devices: subjective and objective opinions, evil polls, bribe demands (note to self: remove this before posting), spell checkers, spoon detectors and many, many others.

  • Basic Requirements

    • A website and guild forums.
People in a guild need to communicate, other than in the game only. The era of oral tradition is over even in the setting of Planeshift, you can blame timezones (for want of a better excuse).
    • At least 10 members.
10 different players to be precise. This is nothing more than the Planeshift requirement for an official guild.
    • Two months of activity in Planeshift.
This is part of the test, a minimum amount of active time is a little guarantee that you can survive. Besides, you will need this delay to earn a reputation, as we will to handle the paperwork ;)
  • Qualitative Requirements

    • The website must contain enough information about the guild, like its setting and purpose, the structure, the rules, the members. If part of this information is secret, we will adapt to the situation.
    • The guild background has to fit the Planeshift setting.
This game is about roleplaying, it is an important factor for us (OOC comments and sections are of course not a problem). This also means decent names, for the guild and its members.
    • The website should be reasonably well-done.
We are not maniacs, but be assured that unreadable scribbling, racial slang (especially enkidukai idioms), or ramshackle guild halls are doomed to a certain rejection from our part.
    • The guild should reach a respectful level of activity in the game, in their forums, and have enough presence in the official Planeshift forums.
There are advertised guilds, and guilds of hermits. But there is no such thing as an advertised guild of hermits.
The purpose is not organising a \"Top 10 Guilds of Yliakum\" chart, but encouraging the guild founders to respect an appropriate level of quality, as well as offering an useful list to everyone who needs it.

To all guild leaders: if you think your guild meet those requirements and would like to see it added to the list, I invite you to post this information in the Guild Arena forum of the tavern (you need to register):
  • The guild name
  • The leader\'s IC name (there can be several leaders)
  • The website URL
  • The guild alignment (it can be non-aligned, just say so)
  • The date of creation
  • a justification as to why you think your guild should be added. This is an important part, we want to hear your own opinion, don\'t just say \"because it meets the requirements\", or \"because it\'s the best\".
The following information is also desired but not mandatory, you can still send me this later. You can use the following addy: kada.tavern[ad]gmail.com:
  • A 70x70 icon (usual graphics formats like gif, png, jpg). It doesn\'t necessarily need to be square.
  • A short summary (100 words max)
  • Whether you\'re part of an alliance, and if so, the other guilds
Besides guilds, we also have organisations in the list. In that case, some of the requirements may be disregarded, like: the number of members and the kind of information related to the background. We do expect a background of some sort, though, or a purpose useful to the community. For example, a simple forum that just sits there for you to have a chat doesn\'t fit in the plot.

Religions are also welcome, of course. They should be considered as guilds as far as the requirements are concerned. So yes, you need enough members, no shelter for puny tortoises ;)

Thanks! :)

Guilds Forum / Save the Guilds!
« on: June 24, 2005, 04:22:36 pm »
As guilds come and go, it seems the Guild List of Kada-El\'s Tavern badly needs to be sorted out. It was about time I had a look, and as you can see on the front page of the site, we came up with a few names...  about which we are not sure anymore. In some cases, we have a pretty good idea, in some others, it would be good to have a confirmation.

So if you see your guild below, please drop me a PM here, or at the tavern, or simply reply in this thread. The guilds and organisations which fail to respond before July 16th will be buried in the Graveyard - that\'s not a place you want your guild to end up in ;)

Then later, in a more constructive move, it will be time to consider adding guilds instead of removing them!

Thanks :)

Guilds of the Realm:
New Guilds to our World:
  • CHAMPIONS OF YLIAKUM: Forums are apparently dead
  • KNIGHTS TEMPLAR: Forums inexistent
  • BROTHERS OF THE SHADOWS: Forums are closed, with what seems to be a farewell message. Fken, maybe you know something?
  • OVATES: Forums are apparently dead
  • FOREST GUARDIANS: No site, Draklar has left Planeshift
  • MOONLIT COUNCIL: Site has never been finished, forums are apparently dead
  • SENTINELS OF THE RAGNAROK: No site
Other Organisations:
  • MONKETH\'S TAVERN AND MERCHANT ASSOCIATION: Monketh, is that definitively closed?
  • THE FOLLOWERS OF ALIATHI: Kiva, don\'t tell me you gave up on this?
  • COTERIE OF DERNIER CRI: Same question as above
  • TEMPLARS OF STEEL: Forums are apparently dead
Guild Politics:
Heh, time flies, maybe it\'s time to change those category names, too.

Thanks to Phinehas for helping out!

Those who want to buy a Claymore will see Trokin\'s Very Fine Shop-o-Stuff is not working for that weapon. It has happened before, and is probably due to the recent moves on the fragnetics site (backup restored ?). Here is the faulty line :

Here is a link to a temporary fix : merchant page

I have been told it was working well ;)

Wish list / Teaching someone a skill
« on: November 26, 2003, 07:15:31 pm »
A few thoughts about learning and teaching. I\'m not sure I have seen anything like this in an RPG, only the usual NPC giving you skill points, or selling them. I\'ve not seen this discussed here either, but I may have missed it.

How do you think characters could teach ?

To give an initial idea, let\'s say every increase in skill level, or every period of time (or a combination of both), the teacher would be given an amount of learning points (LP) that could be used to help someone increasing the same skill level more easily. Like if he was teaching that skill to a pupil, or a disciple.

The more appropriate is probably to give a constant amount of LP regularly, i.e. every n hours the character has been online, once the skill is higher than a minimum value.

The way the LP are given are up to the teacher : freely or at a price. Of course, once given, the disciple can\'t do anything else but to use them to learn the skill (they cannot be given to another disciple).

The LP makes the learning faster and more efficient. If the disciple learns from a book (sorry Wedge ;) ) or from actually doing an action linked to the skill, its level would increase more quickly and further than without LP. The skill level of the teacher is tagged on the LP, so that the gain is proportional to the difference of skills between the teacher and the disciple. Also, it would prevent a lower skilled character to sell LP to a higher skilled one. Once they are used, LP disappear.

Then why not using those LP to write a book ? The teacher could decide to use them this way instead. The problem with books is that they can quickly increase the skills of many people, which is not fair if used within a guild for instance. Ideally they should only be used once for every character, and writing them should use enough LP from the teacher to avoid abuse.

All that could be pondered by a teaching skill, of course, that would affect the efficiency of learning.

Any idea, opinion and feedback is welcome !

The new server appears to be up and running !

I would advise anyone who has a permanent-like connection (dsl, ...) to close his/her network connection to the ISP, then to open it again before checking the server status and before trying to log in PS.

I\'m no network expert, maybe it is due to the fact that the IP is changed (203.81.47.74 instead of 203.81.47.27 ?) whereas the name is the same. Anyway, it worked for me and a few others.

Maybe someone could enlighten us on that topic ?

Have fun on the new server  :)
