Planeshift is a free MMORPG under open source developement.
No doubt you have seen this writen somewhere around. At least you might have seen a part of this sentence when searching the web for "free MMORPG". The sentence does not cover all the aspects of Planeshift (PS) but to a minimum, it is has many implications that deserve some attention when you play it. Forgeting one of the words will make it harder to fully enjoy it. Let me then explain all the parts of this sentence one by one before juming into the whole game. Understanding each part of the sentence will help you to guess what you can and what you can't do.

Planeshift: This describe the computer program but also its settings and the world you will enter. Planeshift is a server, a client, art, maps, texts, ... When you  run PS, your client connects you to a server that will display the PS world according to its settings and the art. When you are in the client, you are in PS. If PS (client) can't connect to PS (server) look for a solution here. If the problem happens after that or is specific to you operating system, an answer might exist in the other Support sub-sections.

Free: Free means that you will not be asked for money in order to use the application. Do not confuse free of charge and freedom of doing anything you like. Like anywhere else, your freedom to do what you want will be limited to what you can do. There are things that are not allowed. It is a good idea to look at Planeshift rules and notifications.

MMORPG: Due to this acronym to be overused in various ways, I will describe the do/dont implications of each part.
MMO: Massively Multiplayer=You will not play alone. You will have to share the use of the server with a great number of people from all over the world. Do do so, you willl have to accept their differences, you won't be welcomed to claim any aspect of the game is more yours than theirs. In order to interact with them, you are asked to use a common language (it is english in PS). Once again some of the rules and guidelines are here to guide you. Online=you might know the general etiquette of the internet, also known as netiquette.
RP: Role playing. If you are not used to the concepts of roleplaying, you can start by reading how to roleplay in the mainsite. The terms of role playing are used in acting. They are also used in many scripted games with a fixed scenario. You have to extend those definitions to improvisation to fully catch the role playing in a game like PS. There is no fixed scenario. Only the physical aspect of the role is managed by the system. You are in command of the thoughts and decisions of the character you play. The consequences of your decisions in this role are determined by the world. In a pen and paper role playing game, the world is composed by a game master and the characters played by players. In a computer game, the program is the game master, other online people are in charge of other characters. When you are not used to it, it can look schyzophrenic. You have to separate the knowledge of your character and your own.
Consider this scheme:
Reality > Player // {game world > character}. When in you role, only the parts enclosed with {} are considered as "In Character" (IC) the rest, you in the real world, is "Out Of Character" (OOC) and does not make sense in the lower parts.
As you have to conform to reality, your character has to conform to the game world. That's why it is called a virtual reality.
G: Game; tha last part of the MMORPG acronym is as important as others. It is a game. It can mean that you play it for enjoyment or training. The training part is to confront you to different challenges. You can win or lose by playing. However frustrating it might be to lose, you have the oportunity to play again to start a different solution. Losing and having difficulties is part of the process. Therefore giving away easy solutions will be considered as spoiling the game. You shall not give away spoilers nor expect to recieve them. Doing so it a renouncement to the game. Like every game, it is easier to start after reading the game guide.
open source: PS is made by volonteers on their free time. It means that if you have the needed skills and time, you can join them. It also means that you have to be patient when it comes to delays or bugs. The positive aspect is that the project might never stop evolving in the future, along with new technologies and future ideas, there will always be a possible next step. But unlike some other open source projects, Planeshift uses its own licence that you might read.
under developement: This can be the most frustrating aspect of PS. Indeed it means that unexpexted changes can occur due to new features added, changed or removed. Bugs can affect the gameplay, the server can go down, your client  might crash, ... But you can also see that as an enthousiastic part of it. Your bug reports, suggestions and whishes can become part of the next releases. Making you not only a tester but a contributor. Look for the wishes of others in the Wish list, give your opinion or maybe make your own suggestion.

Planeshift is all of these; a roleplaying game where you interact with many people and contribute to create a virtual experience. If you keep all that in mind, then you will be able to discover something else. Something that is not said in the title of this post: Planeshift is an online community that you will be part of.

Wish list / Aging Monsters
« on: May 05, 2006, 05:39:20 am »
A few comments about monsters spawning. in a way might remember something to people who knew the spawning of crystals and those who read the wishlist regularly
How it is now and --drawbacks if any--:
1-monster M spawns at specified pos. M has defined amount of HP, atack, defence,...fixed stats --always the same--
2-waits to be attacked or attacks the closest player (the closest moving one right now) --same same--
3-killed, gives X xp, loot chance is fixed. -- the player with the final hit gets the loot even if he waited watching the info until he could finish him--
4-disapears after S seconds.
5-wait S' seconds --fixed=always the same--
6-goto 1 --loop on something that never changes--

suggestions:
1) more possible spawn positions for the same monster
this to prevent spawn camping. defining an area of spawning places would be great but on an irregular ground might represent a lot of ground surfaces. An area overing ground with spawn made within it and the mob falling before being showed...
2)variations in spawning monster stats, loot, strength
to make it less predictable. Looking at the monster before attacking  could help or an indicator about target in info window (the range of possible values could be linked to 3), see below
3)ageing monsters
a monster is born more or less young and grows over time until it is killed. Newbies could kill recently spawned monsters but a more trained one would prefer to wait for it to grow for more XP. this would allow heterogen parties where trained players can hunt with less skilled ones depending on where they venture and the age of monsters they meet. size could change, skin color, ... anything to determine visualy the relative strength of the creature.
4)less monsters when less hunters. At some hours of the day there are less online players. This gives an advantage to players of some timezones. Like lemmings monsters should reproduce less when there are less ressources for them (i.e when many are spawned) and more could spawn when many are killed...unless monsters souls have to go to a death realm as well. In this case those souls might come to life attracted by the number of players/hunters in their living area.
5)dieing monsters
when too aged, monsters can cease to grow and to prevent an area to be fillled with only strong ones.
6)swapping monsters.
An area can be defined as a place where rats are found, but another creature could live in the same environment. No hurry for this point since it would require more meshes, stats

To make it short for lazy readers: more randomness in ;pos, stats, loot, strength of monsters

The Hydlaa Plaza / An address to Moogie
« on: December 29, 2005, 08:09:53 am »
Dear Moogie,
I saw your signature. Even if I understand your feelings, knwoing that there is nothing I can do to make you change your decision. I still wanted to write this thread that you will or not lock or delete...
I am not from your PS generation. I was a n00b translating \"Mogura\'s 40 MB questions and answers\" when you were already well known as Moogie.
I found a family too, and since that time I saw them going away...
But even if we did not meet often ingame I was always happy to know that someone could stay a long time enjoying PS and keeping a community alive.
I discovered later that there was no unique PS Community but a set of PS communities.
In each of this groups you could bring moderation, sometimes derision but everytime it seemed that you were the one with the just decision. I think that is why you became moderator, op, ...
Your judgement and spirit will be missed. I do not feel like being part of the family you found when you arrived in PS, but I feel like one of the many you could consider as children of this family. Without you, we would not have decided to settle down in PS looking for open discussions and avoiding useless flames.
You helped so much that some forgot that it was not due to them. They should be thanksful, and I bet that many are.
This should have been a PM, but I prefer to thank you openly and let everyone willing to, join me in this thread.

Thank you Moogie

The Hydlaa Plaza / Hunting technics
« on: March 06, 2005, 04:08:28 am »
In the northen hemisphere days are getting longer...The season is starting...

You must be ready. I will share with you the latest technics used by the world champs. You will need to invest in some basic gear but it\'s very effective.
Before all you need two differents decoys. One for distant calls and another when your ground-game comes closer.
Instead of a theorical explanation. I invite you to witness a good hunter in action.

He looks for the best spot...an open space is needed for better sight. A plaza will do the trick.
To attract them from the distance he starts using the first decoy: \"itsfreee!!! itsfreeee!!!!\"
It doesn\'t take long before the first ones are approaching unsuspecting.
The accuracy of the hunter allows him to use the second decoy right at the desired distance: \"level up up up!!!\"
Look at them...they begin to look around with wide eyes and a slobber mouth...
It\'s the moment for the hunter to shoot his deadly weapon: *PAW* a bug right between the eyes.

Some may say it\'s a cruel sport. But it\'s the traditional way to hunt n00bs.

Guilds Forum / The Defenders of Yliakum
« on: June 21, 2004, 12:36:52 pm »
The Defenders of Yliakum
In the age of Molecular Blue (also called MB) Yliakum lived in peace. People used to live peacefuly and spent theyr days in speaking, exploring and collecting the crystals for fun.
Quote
This days are told in the Rangers history by Monketh like this :
... a ynnwn by the name of Enraged arrived in the town of hydlaa. He had aspirations of greater glory, and gathered all those who would come to him as the guild of The Legendary Warriors. Those who stayed over time would, in fact achieve that goal, to become legendary. However, many who came did not stay, and the roster was filled with hollow names, no longer important to anyone.
Some of the ones destined to that greater glory were Monketh, Grakrim, Seperot, Draklar, Ravna, Arbraz, Tranor, and Druke. Shadowx still lingers on occassion. Several guilds have formed from it\'s ruins. Well, anyway, for a time \'twas good. The Legendary Warriors prospered, \'twas said \"The Sun never sets on the Legendary Warriors\". They were common, and they were generally respected throughout these parts. Their post-forum thrived, their ruby packs were full, and they were happy.
Their leader was more rude than his members, however. He caused disputes between himself and other guilds. One member in particular, Draklar, got so annoyed that he left with a good complement of the guild and founded The Defenders Brotherhood.
Among the guilds of Yliakum, only a few were devoted to be Lawful and Good. So the Defenders accepted among them most of the people ready to risk theyr lives to protect the citizens of Yliakum.
After a long period of peace, some warriors where tempted to become more Neutral or even Evil. So was Draklar. He became a warlord of the Dark empire and the guild was left for a short time without leader. Many members of this days, maybe feeling orphans, decided to join other guilds or armies .

Showing a great devotion to the guild and a strong sense of honor, Silenthero was nominated as a new leader.
With the help of the members, the Guild organised as a real brotherhood. Each Member having a rank to describe his vocation and not any particular authority. To ensure the recruiting and listen to the will of the brothers and sisters, Aineko the Mindcrafter helped  Silenthero to evaluate new members and recruit them.

But then, Aineko had to leave Yliakum for an important mission. Until the day she will come back, some believed that the brotherhood was lost without leaders. But from the spirit of honor and courage of the brothers, alives or deads, emerged a powerful being. Named from the brotherhood name, \"defenders\" is the leading spirit. Some brothers and sisters are able to summon him in the form of an Ylian.

If you are not looking for fights but are ready to protect the others and face Evil, try to contact one of us.

Possible vocations
The brotherhood does not use ranks to define a hierarchical structure. All brothers are equal with various vocations.

Hero: Powerful adventurer that dedicated his life to help those that are in need. He\'s not looking for fame nor wealth and money have low value for him. Spreading good is his way of life and he won\'t ever dishonor himself by making any evil deed.

Mindcrafter: Mage that is following Azure Way. Mindcrafter has ablity to influence his surroundings. He not only can move various objects with his will, but also hack into minds of his foes.

Guardian: Warrior among Defenders. Guardians will be hired to do various protection jobs.

Cleric: Mage that is concantrating on Crystal and Blue Way. Cleric has power to heal wounds and cure from poison. He will use them to help those that are suffering from pain. The most powerful Clerics are able to bring others back to life.

Knight: Most honorary of all warriors. Knights use their strenght to destroy evil and protect people in distress. Their skills in using armour and weapons make them great soldiers that won\'t ever retreat from battlefield. Mainly Knights will be sent as military aid for our allies.

Battle Mage: He\'s concentrating on destructive power of fire. By folowing the Red Way, he can cast various spells that will inflict massive damage to his foes. He\'s very valuable on battlefield and can bring fear into minds of enemy warriors. Battle Mages will be sent as military aid for our allies.

Paladin: The holy warrior. Besides fighting with weapons, Paladin can also cast various spells, mostly based on Crystal and Blue Way. Usually Paladins have blessed armour and weapons. They use their might and wisdom to hunt and destroy evil.

Invoker: Mage of the Brown Way. His spells are concantrating mostly on protection. He not only can cast defensive spells, but also summon various creatures. His powers make invoker great guard and defender.

Champion: Powerful warrior with great skill in weapon fighting. This adventurer is travelling across the land, helping those that are in distress. His brave deeds made him famous and nothing will move him from his way of champion.

With all this weddings, I think the temple has a magic effect.

What about a forum about weddings
for banns and a picture of the bride and groom near the gazebo.

if someone wants to edit wedding dresses skins.

May we avoid the need for a divorce forum

The Hydlaa Plaza / PS community?
« on: March 18, 2004, 01:58:19 am »
Hello there. I am a n00b.
I enjoyed the idea of joining a community of role players.
I started role playing in 1980 or so.
In France, we were only a few to play such silly games. D&D was only avaliable in english.
Years passed and I had to find a job and had no more time and no more friends ready to role play.
Then I finally had dsl in 2003.
I searched the web, tried a few \"so called mmorpg\".
There I learned the word \"n00b\". Most were mmofps or places for power levelers to loot low-levels.
Then I took a look at the PS website, the newbie help.
What? A community? Role Playing? no PvP? sounded good.

And it was good: Various guilds, characters with history, help for newcomers, ...
No monsters, not much to buy but parties at the tavern, hide and seek games, exploration and role play chat.

But today came the question : Why am I playing PS?
- playerID used to decide who is n00b and who must be respected. (I am n00b my pID is 72222)
- looting crystals and calling that \"crystal hunt\"
- using /shout to throw insults and ooc and off topic endless discussions (concerning 0 and sometimes 1 or 2 players), dirty jokes.
- ignoring or lying to newcomers
- no more role playing.
- no more serious guilds.

So, not to feel n00b, I did my best to enter top10 in the crystal hunt (the PS leveling).
Well it\'s done (at least today). So I have nothing more to do here.
I might come back when-CB-is-out or later.

more than 130,000 accounts?
--------------------------
Thanks to the ones who helped a n00b.
Nilaya  Karyuu  Fenrison  Dinawyn

Goodbye and thank you to the few role players I have seen.
Aineko  Bora  Draklar  Darktanian  Sydin  Agara  Sangwa  Monketh  Aendar  Zabeal

something is getting wrong today.

While playing the delay between actions and server response increased to 20 seconds. Then I was dropped.

Since that. I can\'t connect. It just says \"you are already connected...\"

(Maybe I\'m not the only : Clients:2).
