the forgotten city
« on: June 01, 2003, 05:45:22 am »
started in this thread...

this is an idea or a quest that i would like to be really long ...think of years (IRL!) before you solve it!!!

for now i\'ll just quote that idea i posted in that other thread, because i don\'t have time to write it in details ...i\'ll post some details probably after thursday

Quote

finding quests:
who said that you\'d find that isle/forest/den/etc so quick? ...i mean, there could be tons of bends and angles on the path to finding it ...first you\'d have to find out where it is ...which i doubt would say POS 2032,-23,-235 or level2, at the end of the Western road ...i\'m thinking of really long quests ...i\'d like to have a quest that would take me years (IRL!!!) to complete ...finding a fogotten city wouldn\'t/shouldn\'t be that easy ...we mustn\'t forget the fact that PS will evolve and evolve and would probably last for quite some years or even decades ...i really mean it!!! ...those little quests like \"get the vial\", \"save the daughter\" \"slay the beasts\" \"help a player on his quest\" etc. would (for me) only be some quests by the way this is how i imagine it: someday you hear a rumour that there was a fogotten city where the enkidukkai met a native unknown race and they lived together in peace and built a great magical city in the middle of a eons-old forest ...this you would have to find out slowly and using much effort ...asking different people all over the World and reading many books, until you finally found out where it could be ...but you\'re getting two very different locations where it could be ...you\'ll still have to find them, since their locations aren\'t known anymore ...they\'re just remembered by name and in stories (where you get the descriptions how they look like) ...that\'s a quest for me

p.s. i\'m already obsessed with this quest, so please implement it ...i think i\'ll make this quest my main quest in PS!!! :]

um... how do you expect to make this such a long quest to solve?  A: lots of frustrating smaller quests that seem to spiral in the right direction to the end but never seem to get there (and a dev\'s nightmare) or B: by simply placing the NPCs who give the quests at completely odd places (like behind a rock in the middle of nowhere several leagues from anything)...  or maybe even C: monsters with such horrendously high hitpoints (like say 39 * 10 ^ 18 hp) that it would take you years to kill them... how and WHY would you ever want such a quest????

Haven\'t checked out the original thread yet but off the cuff it would seem as if Drilixer has a point. Would it not make more sense to have an overall quest made up of several smaller quests that logically follow each other, even though they may branch off in several directions?

For example if the overall quest is to find the lost city (and there probably has to be a good reason for finding it other than mere curiosity - maybe great wealth, magic, magical weapons, knowledge etc.) Possible sub-quests could be:

Finding several small maps that together form a puzzle of a greater map.  (these quests could be undertaken as part of the overall quest or seperately by someone who wants to become wealthy by acquiring and then selling the smaller maps to \"great map\" collectors.
Acuiring a specific animal with specific skills in order to reach the location or even vicinity of the Lost City. (In other words first find the maps, make the puzzle so the big map is formed, find the clues as to the location and the necessary means of transport to reach it, plus get such a means of transport!)
Learn specific lore about the history of a given race (example Enkidukai) (Without this knowledge you will not know that once you\'ve reached the lost city you would require knowledge of a specific strain of magic to be able to enter the area at all.)
Find a willing and able teacher/mage of that strain of magic (in a very specialised field) to teach you the required magical skills. Go through the training of that school of magic, master the basics as well as the specialised skills required.
    [/list]

Now THAT will take a hell of a lot of time to complete! 8o  But it still is a larger quest made up of several smaller quests. Each smaller quest could be undertaken for its own sake or as part of the greater quest.

Hope I\'m making some sense here  ?(

I like the thought of a lost city  a very big city thats hard to find but i dont think it should be a quest to find it because alot of people wont even be doing quests they\'ll just be exploring and leveling. Lost City-good idea ...... making a huge quest out of it-bad idea

What you don\'t even like my watered down multi-quest-in-a-huge-quest-super-brainwave?  8o

Sheez Drilixer, I was just starting to like you and now you go and pi*s on my battery like that!  X(

Shangrala I might never even get to like you:evil:

:P Now we\'ve got that settled

At least we all agree that the lost city idea is great.

exactly I like seeing new cities you should describe the city in this thread:

    http://planeshift.oodlz.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=4825&boardid=11&styleid=3&sid=f7ba1667287e9fd6bfce34c4d67d5813

    - I\'ve seen *and liked* some of your stories though Wolf - maybe if you refine the concept some more for us we will like it but most times when developers start trying to \'link long and arduous quests\', the end result is more frustrating than anything else

Thanks for the nice comment on my stories/ideas Drilixer, I\'m liking you more all the time 8)

I first want to develop the idea of an underwater city for Aquatic Elves (Nolthrindir I think they are called). Would be accesible to other races as well in a trance state accompanied by an inhabitant, something like that but I\'ll do it in the right forum.
