Mac OSX Specific Issues / Re: Catalina Mac OS 10.15 A caution and a question
« on: September 03, 2022, 06:40:08 am »
Hi, its been such a long time since I visited Planeshift, only to discover I can no longer install the game. Any news on updating the MAC version to 64bits?

Thanks,
Ithwaynn

You could try disabling GLSL.

Tried this and it crashed the client before it could finish loading. Deleted the line and reopened the client...may have made it worse?

it may be a good idea to clear the shadercache after changing that setting - from my experience not doing so and changing that setting may cause crashes/corrupt the cached shaders

This actually did the trick with me here! I manually deleted the file Shadercache (not with the updater) after adding the GLSL disabling line into the planeshift.cfg
Such a simple thing! I knew it! Thank you RlyDontKnow!  \\o//

PS has never run smoother than now! Perhaps you can add an option to the updater in the graphics section to disable GLSL in the future?

Unfortunately PS crashes as soon as I enter

          Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_ARB_shader_objects = false

into the .cfg file, even if I uncheck VBO.

Well, i also think this might be the problem. However if I add "Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_ARB_shader_objects = false" to the planeshift.cfg
File, PS does not even start up. Is ther any other way to revert back to openGL?

If already the "podium" turns in a slideshow speed, I doubt the RAM is the reason.

I am glad you say so, I was a bit worried. But since 0.5.8 runs normal without any lag, or only a little near Harnquist, I don't think that RAM is the poblem, also.

I copied the 0.5.8 zip's to 0.5.9 with no change.

What you mean by "no change" there? I assume you mean the same performance problems arise. If this is the case means it's not the new art itself to give you problems, but potentially other changes to Planeshift client (example shaders definitions) or CS itself.

Now keeping 0.5.8 art into 0.5.9 :

1) Check how much free ram you  have when PS is running. I see you have 4Gb total, but I need to know how much is free.
2) Check if the lag happens only on large maps, or also on small ones (like a guildhouse). Or try to find any other recurring pattern, example: lag only when many chars are on screen, or many objects, or large maps, or reflections, ...
3) try to copy data/shaders and/or data/shader-snippets from 0.5.8 to 0.5.9 . If it doesn't crash (may be completely incompatible) check which perfs you have with that, and we may be able to identify what's the problem.

I copied the 0.5.8 zip's to 0.5.9 with no change, meaning same bad performance when copying the art.

RAM:
Currently PS 0.5.9 takes between 1,7 GB and 2 GB of RAM depending where on the Map I am. Meaning that when in Hydlaa, I have about 1 GB of free RAM left. The rest is taken by 760 GB other active system usage and 240 GB of wired and inactive.
Hydlaa is the worst to go to - meaning greatest lag besides Ojaveda.
All this makes me wonder how v 0.5.8 was running quite smooth on my initial 2 GB RAM before I upgraded to 4 GB. Btw. v0.5.8 is taking the same amount of RAM when I measured it just now, only that it has less lag.

Copy data/shaders and/or data/shader-snippets from 0.5.8 to 0.5.9:
0.5.8 shaders are not compatible with 0.5.9 since PS crashes without even starting.

Oh, Talad has given me another idea! Beside the free ram amount check also, in your activity monitor, if psclient process seems to freeze when you experience the issue.
A frozen process appears in red in your activity monitor.

No, PS does not freeze, it just eats RAM!   :o

If you have 0.5.8 and 0.5.9 installed, you may try to copy the art/meshes.zip , mataerials.zip world.zip from your 0.5.9 to your 0.5.8 install, and run 0.5.8 to see if that is better or not. Then try viceversa with 0.5.9. This can tell you if it's the new psclient application to be the problem or if it's the new art.

I copied the 0.5.8 zip's to 0.5.9 with no change.
Doing so vica versa crashes 0.5.8
The problem might be in the client then? Or shaders? Haven't they been changed from one version to the other?

@ Jawir: No problem, now I know where you come from ;-)

Don't give up on all of us. There are people willing to help. Just maybe not with a Mac...

I know some of you are trusted friends and this is much appreciated, believe me. I would hate leaving the community after such a long time.

@ Jawir: Thank you for your suggestion which I have tried. Unfortunately with no success though (besides having all in italien  ::) ) It was worth a try however and I am very patient in testing different settings and suggestions. I did that for Trymm a long time ago also.

What ever idea you might have, I can try it out in the hope and believe that we get PS working on the Mac - to get those, who suffer by the same problem as I, back into Yliakum.

This might also help: I have set my current graphics to the following:

Color Depth 16
Anti-Aliasing 0x
Anisotropic Filtering 1x
Texture Quality High (can be Medium also - does not make a difference)
Shaders Lowest (setting this to any higher makes it worse)
No Shadows Bloom, Grass, HDR and Weather enabled
VBO enabled
Background loading: World
Particles Medium

As mentioned before, the lag is already experienced just after the log in screen where I can choose my character to play. Above setting runs smooth on that screen but in game this setting allows me to wander around the country side with lower lag, but when getting near any city - especially Hydlaa and Oja, lag gets very bad.

No more responses or help?

That is very sad indeed. I guess its not important then!

One less Mac tester, I believe, due to incompatibility or ignorance!

Hello,

Delete you shader cash, put color to 16 bit, medium texture, medium shader, 2x AntiAliasing and Anisotropic
I have the same issue with light computation.

Tuux

Thanks, done all you suggested. However no luck. Still moving in slow motion beyond believe.
By the way, Anti-Aliasing always jumps back to 2Q instead of 2, which is strange and has been reported in Bug tracker PS#3716 - Graphic Settings on startup.
I guess it has something to do with the GSLS but disabling that as mentioned in another discussion crashes my PS right at start-up.

Version 0.5.8.1 runs normal however has strange graphics, being white and very bright. Not sure how to tweak this.

I cannot believe that the problem lies within the OSX Lion. I am sure that it may be only a slight tweak but me not knowing much of programming would rely on the knowledge of developers.
Anyone?  :(

« on: April 28, 2012, 08:58:54 am »
I am having enormous problems in getting PS to play even nearly normal. Currently the trouble already starts in the character choosing screen - lag is unimaginable. When finally entering Yliakum it took me 65 minutes to get from the Forrest exit to Gugrontid.
I have tried various settings (disabling grass, turning all to the utmost minimum in different combinations) and also disabled GLSL. The latter however crashes PS right at the beginning. I reinstalled v 0.5.8.1 which runs smoothly - however graphics are bright and white which is not bearable too.
Deleting shaders etc. does no difference either.

I am running iMac 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB RAM on OSX 10.7.3

Does anyone have an idea how to solve this problem?

Mac OSX Specific Issues / Re: Black World of Yliakum in Version 0.5.9
« on: April 27, 2012, 01:22:21 pm »
Yes, I did a cupple of times already. Strangely I was able to walk normally for a very short time. Then all went back to getting stuck!  :(
The problem already starts when choosing the character. That means even before entering the world of Yliakum.
