General Discussion / New engine yet?
« on: May 16, 2018, 06:34:17 am »
Every so often, I remember Planeshift, my first Morpg, and I check in. There was talk once about transferring to a new engine, but it looks like that has not happened yet. I would be interested in checking it out, if that happens. If and when that happens, Can someone poke me on twitter (@glompzilla) and let me know?  Each time I check I get less hopeful.  But the glimmer still glows. Happy Hunting either way!

General Discussion / Re: Guidelines to play an "evil" character
« on: March 27, 2011, 10:38:20 am »
I had to skip ahead some in this discussion since it turned into a flame war... Look up at the subject people.  Why you dislike someone is not the topic.

My contribution to this thread is http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StupidEvil.  It is short and gives you a bit to think about.

Quote
These are the people who seem to think having an evil alignment means doing nothing but evil every waking moment, even out in broad daylight. Like, say, stabbing a peasant while several high-level town guards are watching for no reason other than you were bored.

So I believe that a character who is evil should probably try to appear to be good-ish, unless they are playing a stupid evil person, who tends to cut of their nose to spite their face and end up in prison, an asylum, or some other consequence.  That is my opinion on it anyway.

In the really old days, people used die rolls to add combat.  Then the Devs made actual mechanics to make it work.  One can debate if it is fair, or fun, but fact is, it is ingame already.  Sure, Some magic is weaker in Duels, and that may (or may not) be addresses someday, but fact is, if you train for a month IRL on being a juggler, you will probably not be able to defeat Someone who can bench press a truck and knows how to fight a little IRL either.  So if you can not wipe the mat with someone, I suggest not fighting them.  RP someone whose attitude matches their skills, or get used to losing a lot.  I have a low level alt who acts like he is tough, but is easily defeated, and that is RP also.

We do not all have to be Gandalf meets Zeus.  Not to many years ago we would Duel each other and see how we compare.  Some may have higher numbers, but others would be better at the actual fighting.

I do not think we should toss out the mechanics for die rolls.  You can do that in an IRC room and not even need a gui.

If you find a group that likes to do that, more power to you, but I will Duel if RP makes sense to do so, and win or lose based on skills, my own and my character's.

Btw, there used to be rules for playing card games and such in the tavern... People still doing that?

Ok, I finally understand, I hope.

"If you want it fixed now, compile your own client... or wait until a new client is available as update."

(Or reinstall a previous version... ugh.. no thanks)

Since I am not willing to compile or mess with my installation, since it took me almost a year to get it working last time I messed with that, I will just wait until I can do it with a newer client, when it comes.

Thank you.

ah, thanks.. but reading them....

http://hydlaaplaza.com/flyspray/index.php?do=details&task_id=5017 says it is fixed, but if you read the comments it does not look like it is fixed.

That's fixed. The character is actually deleted (confirmed by the server) and doesn't appear anymore after restarting the client.
Now, right after confirming deletion (before restarting the client), the deleted character remains in the charcater list (though trying to log it in doesn't do anything). This is not what used to be and it's rather odd.

Comment by Franta (-stf-) - Sunday, 27 February 2011, 12:00 UTC-5:00
I just tested that on zeroping server between 17:45 and 18:00 after upgrading to 0.5.6.2 version. I created new character and uploaded it to server. After I was seeing Harnquist's smithy, I disconnected. Then I tried to delete this character. Here is what I tested:

1) I clicked on Delete Selected Character, then I pressed ENTER. Result: Client crashed.

2) I clicked on Delete Selected Character, then I clicked Yes, then Logout. Result: After restarting client, character is still on server.

3) I clicked on Delete Selected Character, then I clicked Yes, then Quit. Result: After restarting client, character is still on server.

4) I Clicked on Delete Selected Character, then I clicked Yes, then Join. Result: I see deleted character standing near Harnquist's smithy. After restarting client, character is still in the list.

I read that as first person tested and their character was deleted, so they called it fixed.  No mention of any change made, no planned update to server or client... just fixed by not being broken.

Then next person explains what I am still seeing.

EITHER first person was in a hurry and did not mention what they changed, or they did not fix anything.

They might of been in a hurry, but that is how comments read.... DO you see where they actually did some change to warrent the assumption that "so it will soon be released, probably)."?  Maybe I am reading it wrong...

Ok.  So client is either perm-broke, or you are just trying to max your post counts by trolling.

My slots are full.  Besides, starting a new Character does not address the issue of this thread.

So, Anyone who actually knows?

I tried a search, so pardon me if this is posted somewhere and I missed it somehow.

I have a character that I no longer want, and I would like to try PS again with a fresh character.  However when I tried deleting the character (Glompz Illa, yeah, stupid name) it would not delete.  I asked ingame and I was told I would have to downgrade, delete, and upgrade back up, somehow.  It looks like I would have to uninstall PS, get a 5.5 torrent, install, HOPING that it works there... and if not, keep trying random actions.  Somehow that makes the thought of coming back here less exciting and I am HOPING there is an easier solution.

Any way I can delete the character without spending hours on it?

and you miss the point.  well done.  You had to work hard to miss it.  Gratz!

So are you claiming that all names that are similar to any names that can be found in any RL source should be banned?  Because that is A counter argument...

I do not even understand the point of your post, other than "I disagree"

thanks for that though, I guess that adds to the discussion, eh?

btw, I could find a RL reference to just about all names ingame, either intentional, or accidental.  Even Bamko, when I searched the domain, turns out to be a oil exploration company in texas.   That was years after I made the name, but still, point stands.

Of course you will find some way to disagree with that as well, and still not add to the disccuion.  Here is a hint, it is nice to take a position (mine is names should be quite liberally allowed, with few exeptions) and then argue YOUR position, not simply troll and snipe.

But hey, whatever you like, serves me right for once again trying to become a part of this community... [back to /ignore PS forums ]

General Discussion / Re: Why I don't roleplay more
« on: November 27, 2009, 04:59:40 am »
Breifly, IMO, The best way to RP is to get to the point where  your ingame toon/avatar/person makes ingame freinds, without even asking for, or knowing, any RL information about their "owner".

Many RPs will be monologing, acting as actor, director and writer.  I have seen quite a few go to IRC to explore their RP, and ends up being several, if not all, talking without listening to the others.  Kind of funny, in a sad way.

Whether you are letting a kikiri chase you, or playing hide and seek in the Laanx Dungeon (good times) or just talking with your Yliakum freinds, as your avatar, not as you, I think it makes better RP.  Note, I do not believe every RP needs to be epic.  In fact, how many times can you save the realm?

Case in point, how many times has someone taken the time to help lolitria (sp?) with her clan symbol?  Nice epic quest, but can not be played ingame RP, because just about everyone has done it.  And if you rant about how she must have enough clan symbols to build a house, and all of a sudden people think you are NOT RPing it "right"

I find, the more they try to regulate RP, and the more epic people expect it to be, the harder it is to do it.  When I was at the height of my RP, I would log in, chat with Bamko's freinds, and make swords and mine ore... and have a good time.  Then I was told I do not "really" rp...

Really?  Let me ask you this... how do you RP your real life, IRL?  If you behaved the way you are expected to here, you would be carted off to a padded room.  But ingame, unless you are a brain damged Emo sociopath, you just are not trying hard enough?  Yeah... No thanks.

(note, If you enjoy that kind of RP, good for you.  Or if you are willing to keep being the director of epic RPs, even better.  But remember, Good RP CAN be just being a normal citizen.

I read somewhere (can not find it again, but expect it is in Mu's game design site somewhere, but maybe not...) that in any game world, the larger it becomes, the likelyhood there will be a placename = "crossroads" will approach 100%.

Point is, only so many letter combinations, even fewer if you want to make it pronouncable.

Re: Fedro.  Clicked on link, and it came up in another language, Italian maybe?  Click English, and it changed to Phaedrus, seached for "fedro" and while there were pages with that name mentioned in it, bit ot told me: "You may create the page "Fedro", but consider checking the search results below to see whether it is already covered. "  Maybe Talad or some other "god" liked it, and assumed it was a RL name being used ingame?  In a game I was in breifly (closed beta), the very first npc was named "babama" would that be considered too close to "BArack oBAMA"?

Even Weltall (no offense, just for illistration) could be searched and found to be instrumental in another game : http://xenosaga.wikia.com/wiki/Weltall  You can see that this way leads madness.  Personally, I think that unless you are acting the namesake, it should not be an issue, with few exceptions.  We would not want to encourage people naming their toons after religious figures, and such getting Jihads decreed against PS, but besides that, I think it should be fine.  Note, I am not a DEV or a GM, so my opinion is like a janet jackson song, it "doesn't really matter" ( Belaboring the points, but http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4SOnBDe7qs note the name has been used for other songs as well.)

Back to original post... Welcome, and just do your best.  Most players and GMs will be understanding.  The fact you are trying should count for points, to most...

No, not going to wipe the characters, only going to wipe our RP skills.  A inverted wipe!

<everyone logs in and wanders around, saying "is this a fun game?" "give me gold plz" and "how du u win this game NE how?"  >

Man... all those years building my backstory... and personas... all gone.....

General Discussion / Re: Wipe y/n?
« on: November 16, 2009, 09:34:06 pm »
If there has to be a wipe, I just hope the devs carefully prepare for it so they take maximum advantage of it. I especially hope that, before they wipe, they have clear plans on how to balance the game and accordingly redesign or tweak the main systems: leveling, questing, crafting, and money influx through looting and mining  This may sound obvious, but so far 'balancing' has been rather ad hoc.

I think that the devteam has more than enough smarts to ave already realised this, without needing every second players suggestion as to how they should monitor the database to prevent further wipes.

Remember, the wipe is out of necessity, the devteam don't like pulling wipes out.

Ok, Let's take a breath, shall we?

Xillix created a thread asking for input, from the community.  After OVER 20 pages of discussion Hitancrias suggests that, since a wipe appears to be likely, that the most benefit be gotten, if a wipe is done.   No one is insulting the "smarts" of the dev team, and anyone can get so swept into an emotional debate that they fail to take aspects into consideration.  and if the wipe was truly necessary, why the poll?  Useful?  advantageous? probably.  But if it was needed, there would not be a need for this thread at all.  Let's assume that, unless someone is obviously trolling for trouble, that we are all decent individuals who may have a useful contribution.

It is likely there may be many years before 1.0 is released, and as such, I believe Hitancrias sage advice should be heeded, even if it is no more than stating the obvious.  Remember, you can not assume the community knows how on top of things everyone is, when everything is treated as a state secret.   We have to assume, because we are kept in the dark and fed BS.  (insert mushroom joke here)

Finally, I will not quote everyone, but in other posts, as in this one (other authors), people tend to get annoyed and react without consideration.  I am sad to see that this is still rampant in this forum.  You DO know you have permission to disagree with someone, even if you are unable to change their mind. without being insulting or dismissive?  To see this being forgotten by moderators is especially discouraging.  But we all have bad days.   But we are all want PS to succeed, so lets debate, discuss, but let's dial back the emotion a bit, please?  When a player goes on the attack, it is embarrassing, but when a Devs or Moderators do it, it is just inappropriate.

Let's suffice it to say that the question of the wipe may of been better to be "now or in a few months" with the discussion being more centered on that.  And yes, some will very much not like the prospect, while some, including it appears, most of the Devs, just want to do it without delay.

Makes Hitancria's advice even more valid, doesn't it?

I hope this post is taken as it is given, as an honest attempt to contribute positively.

Complaint Department / Re: Crafting or the 'New Realism'
« on: June 08, 2009, 10:39:14 am »
in real life, Magic does not exist, people DIE if they can not eat enough, and many people lead lives of quiet desperation.  We come here to get away from some of that.

Also, In Real Life, I like doing work.  A hobby I play with sometimes is ropemaking.  Twine, cordage.  Whatever.  Sure, would be BORING to make a clickable process out of it, but nice to keep hands moving, cordage twisting, interlocking.

Point is, PS seems to be moving away from being fun.  Add in a 1/3 second (seems longer lately) lag due to ping times, and the process is more like this:

Click on blade, wait for it to realize you clicked on it, move it and place in forge.  opps, you dropped it, due to lag or something... man this thing is clunky... ok.. pick it up again.... ok.. in forge... ok, there is the message finally, pick it up.. quick.... dont want to over-heat it... whew... got it... now place it in inventory... ok.. now put it in hand....

yes, it is still easier than making swords in real life, but understand, you get to REALLY see the metal glow, you get to pound on REAL steel, and you get a REAL blade when you are done.  And unless you are drinking a case of beer before you try to craft, you wont be as clumsy and as "shaky" as we are ingame.

Realism is nice, to a point.  I am known as being a grinder who thinks it should take MORE effort to level up EVERYTHING, but, my dear fellows, Can we try to make it a little fun along the way?

I want to make swords for my guild.  I have the dull blades, and I had time to make them over the weekend, and could not FORCE myself to log in to craft them.  I watched re-runs and actually did some dirty jobs I was neglecting instead.  I will finish those blades, but looking forward to it as I would look forward to a home lobotomy.  And no way in heck will I spend the time to work and rework the blades to tweak a bit more quality into them.

So, until it is FUN, I will probably not be playing as much.  But that has been my position for a while.  Just commenting here as a desparate pleading

Want to make it harder to level, no problem, but please, place a higher priority on making it FUN-er?  Sure not everyone like Desktop tower defense, but hey, a lot of people do, for example.

or you can keep making it more realistic, (realisiticly less fun) and you will find many will find other things to do with their time to escape from THIS reality.  heck, Tonight options? finish up those blades, or pick up dog poop and trim my Old English sheepdog's butt.   Tough call.   Doubt I will be on tonight....   Seriously.

General Discussion / Re: A Short Letter
« on: April 09, 2009, 05:38:44 am »
Re: making an alt; Huzzah!  Well said.  I often had an alt to do certain kinds of activities, including certain kinds of rollplay.  Gerta was the "govt. kiss-up" for example, would aften refer to the Octarchal Decree, and be there for such RP (remember the riverlings?). Bamko would help those learning a trade, or needing to find new areas.. and some, not to be named characters would do the less than savory tasks needed to keep things balanced.  I think I enjoyed gerta the best, Played Bamko the most, but sometimes too many do-gooders and I thought that maybe the other side would need a few more lowish level guys ...

well, I digress... you get the idea.

I also agree with Zanzibar's point.  I believe that PS should not (and is not) trying to be a massively populated leetspeak server, but rather is trying to remain a RP centered game.  While I am taking a break from it, due to many reasons, I am watching and cheering you guys on.  I look forward to where this project will go in the next few years.

oh, But I also think one should not force their character to go OOC (do something they would not do) for the sake of making it fun for someone else, though again.. that is what alternate characters are for.. but meh, people call their "main" their MAIN for a reason.  That is the one they MAINLY play.  So I guess we should conversely not expect someone to log out and back in and run accros the world, just so your RP can have more participants in it, eh?

Even though, I have been known to do just that... On occasion.

There are semi-private bedrooms above the Kada-El Tavern where parts of a marriage ritual could be conducted.
um.. for the sake of us who do not do the "creepy rp" option... and those who may have tender ears, please be sure to be doing that part of the "RP" in tells or group (if more than 2 of you) and not in the main tab..

I am just saying...  ::|
