General Discussion / Improved group/guild system
« on: April 22, 2011, 01:00:59 pm »
I got a request from a player to put this question on the forum: (and thus, here it is  ;) )
-----
I understand that multiple guilds access has been discussed before, and I do not completely agree with it.  However, I was wondereing if there would be any room for secretive groups, for example - Blackflame.  Blackflame is supposed to be a secretive group that works with each other, but without knowing who others are, it is very difficult to learn.  Also, followers are supposed to lead their own lives in public (IC), with have a secret life, so followers do not want to leave their present guild to create/join a new one; Which would also raise awareness to why certain members were leaving.  So I ask, Would it be considered to implement groups along side of guilds?

Complaint Department / In-game paper issues
« on: December 11, 2010, 03:56:33 pm »
I have always respected the sentiments of everyone. The one who asked me not to appear in the newspaper, has seen fulfilled his desire. Who asked me to write in the paper anonymously, has got what he asked. The newspaper does not want the absolute right to write whatever, tyrannizing indiscriminately! It only asks to not have to throw away good articles, or even worst, to risk the BAN because of the whims of a single player.

This sounds already quite different from what impression I had from our talk. But I still think we don't fully speak about the same thing yet.
You write that you anonymized an article in agreement with another player. That's, in this case, pretty much exactly what we asked you to do. Basically to respect the feelings of others (again, players, not chars) with your own gameplay. I didn't know about this case in particular, but Im happy to hear about it.

Let me ask about a hypothetical case: If the same person could be easily identified in your article, so that anonymizing him doesn't mean anything. What would you do in such a case? To make it worse, the player would stop to play, because his char's story and possibilities to act would be destroyed.

What we tried to ask of you is, to take his (in this case theoretical) complaint into consideration. And, if it's not possible to work the issue out with another, ask gms for moderation. Simply that.

I think there's the difference in what we speak about. You seem to be concerned that your newspaper will be censored and things, that your char actually sees, can't be written. Im concerned that someone's hopefully good playing experience can get destroyed. Unnecessarily, because most things can be worked out.

As a side note, the thread reads for me like "The evil gms ban someone, because someone else made an unproven statement". Actually, I read about the ban threat even before a gm said a single word. I would also ask to tone that kind of negativity down.

Im quite unhappy about the consequences you drew, because, despite your view on gms, did my player char read the newspapers he got. I have a slight impression of how much work you put into it.
It's very good that you want to work constructively on a change of the harrasment rule. I can't say anything about it yet (not even if and to what extend it has to be changed), but if there are constructive suggestions they will be taken into consideration.

and the GMs lacking common sense to do a proper investigation on whether the information published is IC or OOC. IC can be information obtained from any other character in game, that has obtained the "generally" OOC information via IC encounters. Simply declaring that the information is OOC is not enough, proof needs to be provided to show that the OOC information has not become IC information along the way with other characters.
As Sarva said, was the discussion not if something was ooc or ic.
We came across some complaint (of course an ooc complaint) about published information.  We offered repeatedly, that both sides of this and any ooc-dispute with another are welcome to come to us, so that we can talk to both sides and calm the issue down.
This offer was never accepted. Instead, only the own opinion counted. While that's a valid decision for a player, gms can't just give a "do whatever you want"-permission to a player without considering what this could mean to another player.
We never got to the point to talk to both sides to decide if it was ok or not ok to publish it.

First, thanks for the detailed and reasoned post. My personal opinion:

A bot client also known as botting is a complex program that is designed to perform one or more tasks with 0 user input. and more often than not utalizes a non authorized client to directly communicate with the server.
[...]
Now because a macro program directly inputs the mouse movements and keystrokes it in no way alters the game or effects the game play its self. So a macro does not fall under the category of a tool that destroys the creation of the developers.

If I read your post right, is a keyboard macro valid, because it doesn't alter the program in order to perform tasks. The same time would a hacked client, that does the same task, be illegal.
I don't think it is important how you change the gaming experience, it is important that you do.

A bot client breaks balance because it advances your character to a skill level that you did not take the time and effort to reach
BOTS ARE CHEATS
[...]
This involves a player who is actively engaged in the game but who through use of the program has taken a long tedious process of clicking and keystrokes and turned them into a single button.
[...]
So the only thing a macro does is cut down on the sheer number of mouse clicks.

Again, I don't see a big difference. The thing you want to achieve is using an automated process to work around drawbacks of the current ui and make the game easier just for yourself. This is something that gives you an advantage over others in a multiplayer game.

But as stated a properly assembled keyboard macro does not give players any sort of advantage

Why do you create a script if it has no advantage? It of course gives an advantage, the question is rather how big it is compared to no script on the one side and more complex scripts and bots on the other side.

With that I see two big problems with the request. First, the problem with cheating is not how you do it, the problem is what is done to get the desired advantage. Second, the scripting gives you an advantage over others.

Edit: Fixed wording

Complaint Department / Re: haters gonna hate

I didn't see this thread before today, and as I see are most things already said. But I want to add and repeat a few things.
I made clear before, that I simply don't accept that some players willingly hurt others to have fun, and this is what happened here. Xoel made already clear somewhere else that he doesn't agree with my attitude, that I want all players to enjoy the game, and not just some on costs of others. So no need to repeat that here.
The main problem is, that one player had fun by hurting other players. To make it clear: Not the chars, the players.
The other problem is, that there was no rp involved in the matter that lead to the ban. To make it clear beforehand: If you roleplay just with yourself, or with people not involved in the matter in question, it also doesn't count for that matter.

Let me just make a quick and dirty summarization (For the flamers: please note that it's not intended to be comprehensive) how this robbery was done or could have been done:
1) You, as player, see a open guild house. You could do a few things: You can inform the guild about it, because you know some would (ab)use it. You can decide to rob them.
2) You decided to rob them, so you can again decide between a few things: You tell them beforehand and agree on an interesting rp. Or you can just do that without agreement and knowing it'll cause grief on the players behind the chars.
3) So, you rob the house without agreement. You can rob a few valuable items, or, you can decide to (almost) completely clean the house out.
4) Ok, you decided to rob the house without agreement, thus cause some grief and also to clean it out. You can now decide to inform the players after this was done to force this action as rp on them. They'll probably be angry with you, but this can be solved with a talk, maybe with the help of a gm to moderate before it gets bad. Or, you can decide to keep the items and not tell them. Not in day, not in weeks, never.
5) You decided to
   - just keep the items(also items of just personal value)
   - Not tell the players in any way so they have a clue what actually happened (it's not their task to be god and know everything)
   - Not leave any trace
   - Make no attemt to start a rp that involves the robbed people and leave them any chance.
6)You repeat that with more guild houses. You never do anything to start a roleplay that goes past the lonely, not agreed cleaning out of several houses.
And finally, you declare it as task of the victims to start a rp with you and declare everything as their guilt.

You didn't separate ic and ooc here and you show not the least will to even consider that something went wrong (not until that sentence in your last post).

General Discussion / Re: Using magic against NPCs
« on: April 15, 2010, 02:38:19 am »
You may not EXPLOIT the game, however I think it is fair to use terrain to your advantage.

If I stand behind an obstacle that an npc SHOULD be able to get around/past and attack him until he dies, then I am exploiting the game. The only reason why the NPC could not fight back in this case is because of some limitation to the game mechanics.

If I stand up on a high wall and shoot down at a creature and I am well out of reach then that might be a little different.

However.. Think about it from the enemy's perspective.
If you were a dlyao and you saw your brothers getting pelted to death by a weak magic user on a wall, what would you do ?
Would you stand there and wait to die or would you run out the the arena, go up the stairs, and destroy him ?

At some point you need to be reasonable.

That is exactly the point. It is not really allowed to just cast magic from up a wall at Dlayos, who are intelligent enough to run to you and attack. It is right now tolerated though, because the NPCs cheat, too ( Kill by lag ;) )
This is of course an unofficial statement.

PvP,PK and Thieving / Re: Adding Crime into PS

GMs who are moderating don't RP, but stay invisible. However, there are times when there is no work waiting and there are several GMs ingame. This could be one situation when GMs decide to leave the moderating work for a little and go on patrol as guard. Or try to catch someone who is wanted.
So, you should distinguish between guarding and moderating - and also distinguish doing events from those two. These tasks don't get mixed.
