Unreal Engine / Re: High resolution pictures of the current game
« on: May 01, 2020, 10:31:27 am »
The imagery of the path and trees to the magic shop looks outstanding. The landscape is a really huge improvement. Thats becoming very realistic.

Its hard to see much detail from all those high vantage point screenshots. It doesnt really show much of the details imo.

You guys seem to be focused on porting everything over, which I dont downplay would be an enormous task of itself. I would imagine just getting the lighting right would be an effort in itself.

You guys seem to be doing a good job at taking full advantage of all these wonderful light sources. I can understand why as its the quickest way to see big impact for minimal effort. Those light sources do make or break the imagery. One of the things thats been bugging me, when I look at these images is that the materials look wrong. When I look at the materials on certain buildings, they look dense, badly stretched and with the wrong reflectivity settings in some cases. Understandably, materials bloat game size so I can understand why you guys choose to keep them as small as possible. In some areas, it does seem to work and you can get away with it but in other areas, it just looks completely artificial and fake. Light sources are definitely the bigger problem ( and getting it functional ) but time permitting, I think some of those materials could do with some work.

Yeah, that image of the magic shop looks really amazing. That arboretum looks pretty good as well.

Without a doubt, Lighting will have the biggest impacts... my second criticism would be Materials in certain places seems a bit artificial and un-natural looking.

Examples of bad material usage... Ojaveda Tents ( reflectivity is good, just what kind of material is that? Looks odd ).
It might be the distance but Gugrontid looks very dense. The mountains and greenery look awesome. Far screenshots might not do it justice but the rocks look very dense.

Its probably something you guys already know.

I got to admit, Im not a huge fan of the Lava and the Water in the Waterfall. That looks pretty crap to me. Blocky, un-natural and just visually wrong, but it might just be the distance of the screenshot.

Very gothic and amazing use of light source. The lighting is definitely an improvement, for sure. While it takes a huge amount of work just to do the simple things, my only comments on the images I see are the Material Surfacing in some areas looks a bit off. Not only are the materials very stretched and fake looking ( like for the magic shops roof but I suspect your trying to keep game size down ) but there are also materials with high reflectivity in odd areas while other sections you'd think should have reflectivity dont have any at all. The material and shades need some work, I think. In some areas they seem to work just fine but in other areas they come across as really fake.

I actually like the low lighting. Its very dark, atmospheric and medieval looking.

If I was to complain, I'd say that cave image looks off. The floor and the beams look pretty good but those walls are just totally wrong. The colouring of the walls isnt terrible. The thing thats off putting is the blocky / straight lined / artificial nature of those walls... and the fact you have a colour transition from an orange floor directly into dark brown wall seperated by a line. The lack of a decent colour transition between floor and wall just seems really blocky.

The floor needs to transition its colouring into the walls, rather then be so blocky.

Its crude but effective, I guess ;p

The image of Ojaveda is bizarre. You have a nice reflective and shiny dirt floor, while the walls dont reflect anything at all. The walls are less reflective then the dirt floor. What the? That just seems un-natural. It should be the other way around. The walls should be highly reflective while the floor shouldnt be. If the intention is for Ojaveda to have that special reflective flooring, that at the very least, the walls should be a lot more reflective then they are at present.

Amdeneir at night looks really good.

The Amdeneir Tavern, again, I'd turn up Reflection. Low Light Source bouncing reflection off stone walls would look very atmospheric. Those walls currently look very dull and uninteresting. The light needs to bounce off the walls more to give it that euphoric look.

I cant imagine how much time has gone into all these. It would have taken forever.

Nice reflections on those images. Im sure some fun stuff could be done with that later.

The games pretty much dead until you guys get all this sorted. Its not going anywhere in a hurry.

Hello fellow Planeshifters...

A friend has accidentally moved the Ingame Toolbar off the screen and is unable to get it back (Windows XP).

Anyone got any advice as to what I can do to get it back? ( Delete a config then which one? )

Help appreciated

Could someone post the logs of the second "Meet the devs" please ?

I second that...

Unfortunately, due to timezone differences, ' Meet the devs ' occurred at 2am Australian time. Too late for me... ;p

From what I understand, the LAST time sombody from the non-rp server complained about 0.5.0 being tested on EZ, the Laanx server soon got switched to skylab or somthing, whereas Laanx was made the developer server, skylab was switched for zeroping, i think its funny though, zeroping for me generally has around 400 ping XD

*laughs* Someone named their server ZeroPing? Isnt that like naming a Poodle ' Killer ' or something ( or a pet goat named Jihad ).

and for me development server is where the game is being developed and that server is not public. All the other servers get the updates streamed from that server.

Ah, sounds like setting that up would have been more interesting than playing Planeshift itself (Server farms are cool - Electricity is cool). Its totally awesome that Talads doing ingame meetings with 'The Dev Team' now. I can see that building a developer community. I'd imagine there being people on the sidelines who dont have the time to learn all this stuff but wouldnt mind helping out in some odd way if assistance was provided. This game will probably end up taking off like a rocket.

Planeshift sorta reminds me of CircleMUD with GUI.

Anyway... I cant really think of anything to complain about today.  ;D I've tried and failed... time to play...

I just get annoyed at the constant harrassing from GM's which just ruins the fun...If I ended up on the main server then the GM's would be harrassing me every five minutes which drives me crazy. When I sit down to relax and play a comfortable game, the last thing I expect is to be abused for trivial things by GMs.

When I was last on the role play server, I got into trouble for my description. I had said something like, ' I am dark way. As I walk, my shadow drains the life out of the grass beneath me. ' or something like that. I recall that it was a fairly casual description, if possibly, a bit non-planeshiftish. Nothing terrible.

Now, I had this Dwarf guy racing around me like a strange person. He was saying, ' Im crystal way. I hate dark way. ' and challenging me for a dual every five minutes. I refused. It wasnt anything personal, I just couldnt be bothered at the time ( I was waiting for somebody ). I basically told him in a nice way to, ' go away '. He proceeded to say, ' If you dont dual me, I'll go off and tell a GM. '. I thought, who cares?

What happened next totally surprised me. I get a message from a GM out of nowhere telling me that my description was ' Out of Character '. I was like huh? Actually, it wasnt the fact that he said it but more how he said it. He was extremely offensive. He'd constantly be interjecting with, ' Are you there? I know your there... Have you changed it you? Im going to kick you / ban you etc '. So, I decided to logoff.

Next time I logged in ( few days later ), I ended up with another GM pouncing on me. It was almost like there had been an auto-responder or something which black flagged me. Quite politely, a GM with a different name said something like, ' Ive heard you need to change your description. ' or something. This harassment continued two more times until eventually, I just quit.

Since moving to the non-roleplay server, I couldnt be happier. My only gripe has been in the server downtime, reboots six times a day yadda yadda. I totally concur, that there have definitely been GM's abusing their power on the role play server. At least, back then there was. Im not sure about today. Not having played on the role play server for over a year, I really cant say.

I dont mind which server I play on really so long as Im not forced to foreplay, and Im not being harrassed by GM's that just wont leave me alone to do my own thing. Now, which server is that? Thats ultimately the question. The non-roleplay server which is effectively a development server ( rebooting all the time ) or the roleplay one where Im told you gotta foreplay or GMs boot you?

Its very confusing this game... ;p

Complaint Department / Downtime regarding Role Play vs Non-Roleplay Servers
« on: December 29, 2010, 12:36:53 am »
I have a Complaint.

( *puts frown face on* )

When I played Planeshift a while ago, as I had routinely every month or so out of enjoyment, I was told I had to ' Go to the other Server '. I was told of the new rules and that there's a Role Play Server and a Non-Role Play server. Well, even though it was a bit frustrating having to move across to the other server and start all over again, I understood the rules and thought sure. For my gaming pleasure, I really just wanted to play and do my own thing rather than end up being hastled all the time.

Now that Im playing on what appears to be an Official Non-Role-Play server, its constantly going down all the time. I've lost track over how many times I've dropped something on the ground or put it into a Furnace only to relogin and have it all vanished again. Usually, I just login the next day and everythings fine.

In this instance, the servers been down for at least 12 hours and according to the Stats on the ezpcusa page, its not the only time. There is a fair bit of downtime on this server ( not to mention the reboots and such ). Its a tad frustrating to sit down over Christmas to play a game only to find out your ping says, ' Failed '.

The thing is, I understand developers need a test box. The problem is one of thus...

1. IF this is a development / test machine thats designed for constant rebooting, downtime and such then is it wise to call it an 'official non-roleplay server'. Its almost like those who dont want to role play have been relegated to the 'bronx'. Thats discrimination. Its not that I dont like the atmosphere but when I play, I just get annoyed at the constant harrassing from GM's which just ruins the fun. Not to mention, Im not really a foreplay type of guy... personally, I'd rather just get into it.

2. IF the 'official non-roleplay server' is deemed to be unstable and Im told that I should play on the other server, then fine. I then attack the notion that everybody needs to foreplay. I dont want to foreplay. If I ended up on the main server then the GM's would be harrassing me every five minutes which drives me crazy. When I sit down to relax and play a comfortable game, the last thing I expect is to be abused for trivial things by GMs.

Now, to let you know how serious I am, Im going to do a frownie... here ---->    :@#\

Okay, there's my frownie. Now you know I mean business.

So take that... all you... people... yeah... and another... here ---> :@#\

Anyway... just something for consideration I suppose...

We're all gonna diiieeeee... its all over... everythings gonna turn to anarchy... white flashes are gonna fall from the sky and we're all gonna get sucked into spaceships and have our brains sucked out by aliens... *running around while waving hands frantically in the air*

The girls have raised there voices an Octave and are yelling, " What are we going to do? I cant handle the excitement... Save us... Oh save us our hero... "

General Discussion / Any Christmas surprises?
« on: November 15, 2010, 12:06:47 am »
Ooh Christmas so soon... Do us lowly game players get a PS Christmas present? Do we? Huh?

Like a PS Christmas release of new features? Abominable Santas to kill or Sleigh mounts to run to Oja?

Perhaps it decides to snow in Hydlaa or even an unexpectant encounter with the Grinch from the Winch (Oooerr...) ...

Perhaps Perhaps...

Once again: In-game information shall stay in game. Ask such questions to characters in game who are probably educated enough to teach your character (miners, crafters, 'Knowledge Seekers', 'Explorers' ...).

Agreeably a true statement. Nevertheless, can it be answered as to whether those 'features' are actually implemented or not? I personally, think its a fair question to know if they do something ... yet.

Sorry, my mistake. I thought the question referred to the 'flowers' and things found. I'll RTFP next time lol.

Im running Fedora 13 and was wondering if at any point, Planeshift will run its own Planeshift Repository so it becomes installable through the Add / Remove Packages section of the operating system (PackageKit) ?

General Discussion / Re: Your thoughts on death and the death realm.
« on: August 06, 2009, 10:41:27 am »
My 2 cents worth...

The Death Realm should be evil for followers of the Dark way.

It should allow Player vs Player killing. While you cant effectively die, you will have to start again if somebody catches you. This is quite annoying and will make it harder to escape. It will also act as a very strong deterrent to not end up there in the first place.

Those who choose the Dark path should be allowed to make the Death Realm there home. Such creatures have few friends and live isolated lives, hiding in the darkness and scavenging on whatever comes there way. The Realm should be very large, a labyrinth of mazes with lots of places where you can hide from other people. There should also be lots of trainers and shops so you have little need to go to the surface. You could effectively live out your days in the Darkness and never surface unless you needed to.

Dark Way spells should be more effective in the Dark region as White/Crystal Way should be weaker. The Death Realm should not be a place for those following any of the  righteous paths.

A characters eating habits should change as they become more evolved in the Dark path. Common food should become poisonous to an evil creature as they inevidably only feast on the the corpses of those fallen. It is quite possible that a student of the darkness may never regenerate health unless having eaten of his victims in the dark realm. While walking about on the surface may seem like a good idea for a while, never regenerating health could pose a problem for one evolved in the Dark path forcing them to return back to their realm should they need a fresh supply of corpses. Inevidably, regeneration may need a spell draining the health from someone already living.

The Dark path should never be advertised... it should only ever be found by those who have ever stumbled upon it by chance.

I imagine a labyrinth of dark walls (in other words, no open spaces or predictable walkways)... lots of corners making things unpredictable and hard to see. People can hide and instantly jump out to start attacking you at any moment. Its the realm of fear where all most people want to do is escape as quickly as possible.

You could require that the fallen reposses a new body in order to rejoin into the land of the living again. They may need to sacrifice a corpse to enter back into the real world or kill a creature (npc? player?) in the death realm to acquire one. For the pacifists among them, there could exist a quest that takes ages to complete. This would then ensure their return back to the living without having to fight. People would be running around the realm like scavengers trying to get back their once held life again. This would also imply that certain people wouldnt have the skill to make it back and would need to train simply to make it out of the Death Realm with their soul.

There should be an economy built on corpses from the living. Characters can establish Dark Guilds and head to the surface in order to acquire corpses from the slain. These corpses could be offered to their guild, used to improve a characters power or as an offering to the almighty to strengthen the Dark ways. The higher the level of corpse, the more potent its effects can be. Should the white/crystal way have a favourite animal (unicorn?) then bringing back the corpse of a pure animal could serve as a great achievement (or a devil if your a scholar of crystal way).

Naturally, those serving the path of good, have the right to defend the innocent from the evil and to stop them from coming to the surface to take peoples corpses.

Anyway... dont know if any of these ideas spark food for thought...
