Theory Behind Recent Server "Yo-Yo"
« on: September 21, 2008, 06:25:53 pm »
I have come to the conclusion [through some experimenting and trials] that the cause of the recent server crashes (the ones that happened this evening and were only down for a minute or so, but were frequent) are because someone somewhere is opening a wooden crate. The server happened to crash every time I open my wooden crate, exactly when I tried. I tried this two or three times to confirm and then realized it was me who was crashing the server (sorry about that :P) But I am letting everyone know that wooden crates crash the server and should not be opened!

Is it honestly crashing? I've noticed that even the smallest bit of server lag will kick everyone off. It could just be an occasional hiccup.

Edit: Actually, I believe you, since I just saw you in the plaza near a box. Try submitting a bug report on it if there isn't one already.

Yes it has been crashing a bit tonight. On and off. It usually back up within a minute, but I believe if someone opens a wooden crate it crashes.

There is a line "Planeshift.Client.User.Connecttimeout = 10" in the psclient.cfg file. Increasing this value should help with short server lags. But I'm not sure if we are allowed to increase that value (No idea if any side effects). Maybe somebody who knows can state the official opinion on that. Of course this doesn't help with a server crash, but maybe it helps Shamen with "server hiccups" ;)

Bit more information:

Opening a wooden crate still crashes the server. However if you open it in your inventory then you will be able to retrieve your things as normal without crashing the server. But as soon as anyone opens a crate that is on the ground or a player dropped one, then it will crash the server.

Perhaps that wooden crate is actually pandora's box, and laanx only crashes to keep you from unleashing the horrors within.  Think twice before you question laanx's authority next time.
Censorship FTW.

Tomball: Please make a report in the bugtracker, including exact steps on how to reproduce this. We can then make sure that this problem gets the attention it needs.

Looks like someone's trying to open a crate again.

Sorry.
I suggest the statue of Laanx gets turned into a statue of Parallo <3. An NPC could never replace the huge hole he left in my heart when he died  :'(

Typical.

Perhaps I've been saying this a little often.

I once had a ping of 10,000 ms...

Only 10 000? Wow, you must feel bad about yourself. One day I had over 50 000 ms of lag!

Now I found the real reason why Laanx uses to crash just in the most inconvenient moments:

 The PlaneShift developers did a stress test.
