Can't launch the game or the launcher

Here goes, i tried searching all over the net for this, but can't seem to find any answer to my problem. So i'm hoping someone here can help with this. I can't launch the launcher nor the client. I am running Archlinux 64-bit with XFCE desktop on an intel i5 4gb of ram and Nvidia 275 gtx.
When i try to start the launcher i get this:

Anyone know a solution to this?

Welcome to the PlaneShift forum.

Did you install a full-featured OpenGL (ICD) driver? A current "nouveau" should be sufficient, still a proprietary Nvidia driver (nvidia-3*) is recommendable.

I have the drivers directly from nvidia, not the opensource one. That OpenGL driver you mention, is that part of the nvidia driver? If so, it should be installed...

Packages installed: nvidia-340xx, nvidia-340xx-utils, nvidia-340xx-libgl

Been searching around a bit and found some openCL drivers. Are those the one you mention?

The nvidia-340* drivers should be matching. They should provide the APIs (application programming interfaces) PlaneShift needs, OpenGL being the most important. But there may be differences in the support of either 32 bit or 64 bit applications. Which client did you install? On an AMD64 system, either should work, but you would probably prefer the 64 bit game client.

Maybe you can get a bit more help in a dedicated Archlinux forum too: This distro requires more manual tuning, so there may be experienced people knowing which libraries in 32 and 64 bit are required.

A little glossary:
  • OpenGL is the 3D graphics interface PlaneShift uses for portability (it is available on Windows and MacOS X too, in contrast to Direct3D which is Windows-only).
  • OpenAL is a common audio interface, not provided by Nvidia but by audio systems as compatibility layer.
  • OpenCL is a different topic, it helps using modern graphic chips for massively parallelized computations; PlaneShift doesn't need that.

You might have better luck hopping onto IRC and grabbing one of the PS developers there.  I don't think they read the forums regularly, so you aren't likely to get an answer here. Try going to Freenode and then hopping on channel #planeshift-build, #planeshift-gmtalk or #planeshift.  For convenience, you can hop on without installing an irc client via this link:  http://webchat.freenode.net/

Ok, update.... I found out that thru someone having the same errors, but with a different program, that apparently my locale setting was conflicting with xorg-server (i think). Anyhow, i changed locale to en_US and i could now start the launcher and create my avatar. It loaded the world, but i didn't even get to finish reading the introduction before the game crashed with another Segmentation Fault... :/

Correction to prior post:

After further testing, I found that on my my computer, the character generation screen crashes randomly if VBO is turned "OFF". By default, on a fresh install, VBO is turned off. Turning VBO on fixes the problem for me.

I think this is a bug, so I'll make a post to flyspray.

For users who are experiencing a crash in the character creation screen, try this:
- close the application
- start it again
- go into settings
- change the graphics settings level to MEDIUM
  ( or, look for the option to switch vertex buffer objects ON )
- exit out and try creating a new character.

Talk about that in #planeshift-gmtalk and let a GM relocate your char (even though it is just newly created); maybe the spawn location is the only reason? Worth a try, at least.

It might help to lower your settings and make sure that sound is turned on and set to OpenAL. After you are ingame you can up your settings with each log-in.

Ok, i tried looking at the sound and set it to openAL, the i enabled VBO in graphics and it works!  \\o// I am now ingame talking to NPC's :) Thx all for the pointers.  :thumbup:

So if anyone else runs into a simular problem, lets list here...
It seems the engine/xorg or something in that line has an issue with certain locale's i was using en_DK utf8, which is apparently conflicting. So what i did was, change the locale to en_US utf8 and that stopped the launcher from crashing at startup. Then i set the sound to openAL and enabled VBO, which stopped the game from crashing with a segmentation fault, when i entered the world. Hope this can help someone in the future and maybe the Dev's can figure out a way to get the launcher to handle the "strange" locale's... :)
