Title: Dannae's Sketchbook
Post by: Dannae on April 03, 2011, 11:54:19 pm
I've been wanting to post some of my PS inspired sketches in here for some time now and finally got around to creating a thread for them. Love to hear what you all think!

I'll start with my most recent.

I had a huge amount of fun and surprisingly interesting RP with the events that led to the following. It stuck in my mind enough that I was inspired to create some artwork depicting a scene from near the conclusion of the RP'd relationship.

I want this thread to mainly just be pictures, so I've posted the slightly edited logs that go with this sketch here if any are interested: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1x8jKUmV04bjyvyQ24dnXdHq1lcGDECs0qfxoAVinPDw/edit?hl=en (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1x8jKUmV04bjyvyQ24dnXdHq1lcGDECs0qfxoAVinPDw/edit?hl=en)

Simply beautiful.

I hate to say it but I'm not sure who. I'm guessing Dannae and Arjaya.

The link to the logs requires an account on the Daughters of Xiosia forum, should we all become members in order to view it?

Thank you, thank you, thank you, all who've posted flattering and funny comments.  :)

@ Miomo: Sorry about the link. I didn't realize the DOX forum required membership to view, so I revised the link above and think it will work. Also, color might have helped, but it's a dermorian and a nolthrir, so your guess Arjaya is not it.  :detective:

@ Sarras: I was going for sort of a comic book epic look with the sketch, so TY for noticing and the extra smilies!!!
AIDS! You mean Yliakum isn't sterile!
And by the way, I saw this in gossip:
Sarras: dannaids  :o
Gilrond: I've got "Golden shield diagram"
Monala: Sounds like a brand of bandage.
Monala: I'm stuck on Dannaids because they are stuck on me!  ;D

@ Sangwa: Fan Art Project?  :whistling:

@ LigH and Gilrond: Perceptions are often incorrect from an outside point of view.

Um....just to set some unforeseen misconceptions straight...., the scene really has nothing to do with DoX other than that the nolthrir involved in this ritual happens to be a member. The dermorian is a member to another guild.

Heh, nice. I've just recently stumbled upon your site with artwork... no idea how I found it or where it was but everything was pretty awesome (especially the in-game map art, of course. More of those, please! :P).

And here's one more oldie, edited for the PS restrictions that don't allow nudity in art.

I remembered this. Jamona was pretty embarrassed (<- this stupid word, I can never remember how to spell it right) when Dannae showed her that painting in the tavern basement. I was kinda... surprised, too xD

No, really. Keep up the awesome work.

And certainly the most female expression a male player could wish of his character. :P

Indeed, you would be a valuable addition for the team to add some pieces of art to the world of Yliakum. Maybe you even understand UV mapping easily?

I'd consider that when I had enough free time. UV mapping? No idea what it is even.

I'm guessing that has something to do with 3D modeling? Sounds kind of boring unless maybe it's to make a character model. I'd really love to design the look of one of the missing models in the game, like the nolthrir male.

Title: Re: Dannae's Sketchbook

Concept artist would be more to your liking than texturing then.  Texturing is making the file that gets pasted onto the 3D model.

textures are the 2D "skins" applied to models

Dannae: In short UV mapping means matching a two dimensional image onto a three dimensional surface. Or thinking other way around - taking a three dimensional surface, and figuring out how to make a two dimensional image that will texture it. U and V are just names for two dimensional coordinates, to distinguish them from three dimensional case.

For you Derula, here's the complete set of all of my in-game map art that I've created so far. As you know, it wouldn't have been possible for me without all of your help and of course your script which I am so appreciative for. I've not included 2 maps, 1 of the Hydlaa sewers and a 2nd of the Laanx dungeon so as not to be spoilers.

I've included, in some cases, sketches I made to go by in the vector program.... I used Illustrator. I invariably made most too complicated and would end up having to delete and simplify many lines in order to get the drawings down to the 200 element limit maps can accept. I think it counts each end point, curve point, and corner points of every line in a drawing as an element, so they have to be kept very simple. If the number could be doubled to 400, I'd have a lot easier time. My wish list would also include fills and stroke width capabilities, but have read those would not be simple to offer.

I've put medium size pics here with links to the full sized screenies. Hope you like.  :)

This was the first map art drawing I made and is still
one of my favorites.

This is a newer one that I quite like how it came out.
Dannae was commissioned to create the poster.
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--1un2c7deBs/TZzVf56beXI/AAAAAAAABEc/Ldt09yVKI4E/s400/wanted-poster.jpg) (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/H22nEKfcdZNbh84o1gDD2gL-r-mvy05URqiN2bDnZ0U?feat=directlink)

This was drawn for a barter with Ilaro where Dannae negotiated a
portrait for a tailored dress she needed for an upcoming party.
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-S09R-n606Is/TZzVfXqiIjI/AAAAAAAABEc/drOECDx9NzY/s400/Ilaro-Portrait.jpg) (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/WyB_q4c4hRQ6ga8nN2BvJwL-r-mvy05URqiN2bDnZ0U?feat=directlink)
This one was commissioned for the Brotherhood of Talad to depict the
appearance of Talad to Lilura.
I had attempted to draw all of Lilura, but ended up having to delete most to
meet the map limits.
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-C9yteFVFqhY/TZzV0ygALxI/AAAAAAAABEc/7jWiobTkFQQ/s400/Lilura-meets-Talad.jpg) (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/RY0y5LQLkNN6sEl_IYHGEgL-r-mvy05URqiN2bDnZ0U?feat=directlink)

This one caused a problem when I changed it's name in-game
one day to Marathal. Apparently, I was told by a GM, this caused
Marathal's character information in the database to be replaced by my
map art of the same name. The character's information had to be
retrieved from backups when this was found out, and a revised naming
system designed to prevent this from happening again.

This is a certificate border originally designed for Raikana
to use with the newspaper. I will send the xml file to anyone who
might like to use this in game. You can add your own text after
importing the border to a map.

This next 4 are romance cards I was asked to make and sell at a
singles night event held at the Red Crystal Den. I also got to try my
hand at some poetry writing which may or may not have been a
good thing.  :whistling:
Dannae continues to sell these and will add a personalization line

Thank all of you again who've left encouraging comments!
/me hugs everyone and is careful to avoid giving the "priestess kiss of death"*  :-*
* ask Esalir  ;D

Illysia, Thank you... and I'm so surprised you didn't see the cards back when you played.

Also, thank you guys for explaining what that other texturing and UV stuff is. Don't know if I'll ever try it, but maybe if it can be fun or interesting to make a character or something.

As for the fan art project, I might be willing to do something for that if I have the time, but I prefer drawing PS art from things that have inspired me through RP, and the more time I spend drawing, the less time I have to play after my work is done. The drawings take time too, and not just a few hours. Well, maybe for the map art, but not painting. I can easily spend 20 hours on the more involved works. And I've still not gotten around to making Dannae's self portrait, although that is her in the first picture of the thread.

This in game art
is incredible, Dannae.

The limitations of the
maps are a great restriction,
and i am amazed how well
you could reduce the
details of your sketches
without destroying what
they capture...
dynamics,
emotions...
 life.

I think this one is my favorite.

Yes scotty, you're right, and I'm sure knowing Dannae in-game helped you figure that out. I confess,  :surrender:  even though I think most who rp with me from time to time know already, it is my visualization of Sarras in the first pic. And TY for the nice email!

Great work with the tinting, saturation and blur. That's digital art.
I like the detailed traits of the faces, the way they differ from common illustrations of elven characters that lack human flaws, traces of age... and personality.

I recall no menki at the event. Some guy with starting with a name starting with a D was the drunkard, two dwarves (one new one not) myself, and then a fenki were the only people in the bar besides 2 guildies. If you were somehow there, You didn't make a big enough of an impact to stay in my memory

A chain or cord attaches to the hands for the necklace.

Nice work as always. Out of curiosity, did you digitally paint the colors by hand or use procedural textures?
Title: Re: Dannae's Sketchbook
Post by: Dannae on November 15, 2011, 05:07:54 pm
did you digitally paint the colors by hand or use procedural textures?

Neither for this one... I don't think. Don't know what procedural texture is, and I wasn't about to take the time to actually paint textures by hand for this.
The jade and turquoise in the amulet are actual photos of the stones masked into the shape using Photoshop and then slightly altered and shaded by hand.

Thanks as always for nice comments!

I like how the X is rendered, you're inspiring as always.
I've been able to convert an svg in a sketch in planeshift lately. If I remember correctly you had problems in conversion, isn't it?
Title: Re: Dannae's Sketchbook
Post by: LigH on November 16, 2011, 04:23:44 am
A "procedural texture" is one that was calculated with formulas, taking e.g. noise, distortions, surface structure, lighting, reflection and refraction into account.

A quite famous plugin for Photoshop and compatibles would be Super BladePro by Flaming Pear (http://www.flamingpear.com/blade.html).
Title: Re: Dannae's Sketchbook
Post by: Dannae on November 16, 2011, 12:34:31 pm
@ Boeven: Thanks for the compliment. As for conversion problems, I've not had any after finding out some basic do's and don'ts way back when I started importing my illustrator files into in-game maps. The hardest part has always been keeping the design simple enough that it stays within the map's 200 elements. What I wouldn't give for at least double that limit or the ability to include fills! Often I need to redraw sections of my design just to reduce the number of bezier curve points to the minimum possible just so I won't have to delete any more detail than necessary, because I almost always end up with over 200 elements at first. Unfortunately, this reduces the amount of detail possible along with losing subtleties within lines.

@ Ligh: Yeah, that's what I was guessing... filters like some of Kai's power tools. Realistic looks are difficult to get with the one's I've tried though. I have used them before in photo composites, but never in my digital paintings. I won't use any automated texturing or photographs in my paintings because I want those to be all me.
Title: Re: Dannae's Sketchbook
Post by: LigH on November 16, 2011, 01:39:28 pm
A compliment to you - you used existing textures so well, they appear credibly in your piece.

I remember jade a little differently. But it has an incredible variety. If it was possible to add pink to green, it would still not look like it.

Ixi says: go on...
Dannae says: Is there more to say?
Ixi says: guess not ... was hoping for more suggestive humor
Aramara says: aww

/me 's jaw drops.
I...honestly don't even know what to say to that. It's fantastic. All the little detail you put in her clothing and in the light of her eyes is simply fantastic. It's pretty much exactly how I imagine her...right down to the color of her tail poking out from the table. You even got the placement of the RINGS on her fingers 100% accurate. It was so spot on I didn't even need to click the link to know who it was supposed to be.

That's serious talent. If you were an art teacher I'd take lessons from you in a heartbeat. I'm totally going to use this as my desktop background now...thank you, Dannae.

Thanks everyone for all the nice compliments here and in game on my Sacho painting! I'm extremely appreciative and always inspired to do more.

@Boni: Regarding a splash screen, this picture did get me an invitation to create one for the upcoming version, however, because of the eminent release and my work schedule, I don't have enough free time and prefer not to do something rushed. Possibly for the one after (.7). But many thanks for the recommendation.

@LigH: I'd be honored if this piece were to be included on the official fan art page.

Actually i meeted Sacho IG and the PS enki blurred, i had only your drawing in mind. It was extremly pleasant.

I know it takes time but, i hope you will make it for 0.6 !

I know this is late, but THANKS! Aramara, Jiggs, and yourcharname (stashka?)!

Below are results of a little map experimenting I was doing after I realized how those cards in the Hydlaa museum were made to try it for myself which I also mentioned under Donari's topic earlier today.

Unfortunately, they have to be small to achieve the fill like effect without running out of allowable number of lines.

Title: Re: Dannae's Sketchbook
Post by: Gilrond on March 27, 2014, 07:09:11 pm
Dannae: Very neat. Are you using just a bunch of curves to create a "fill" effect?
Title: Re: Dannae's Sketchbook
Post by: Dannae on March 27, 2014, 10:57:38 pm
@Gilrond: Yes, basically... no rocket science!  :D   Just a lot of lines close enough together to look like a fill. I experimented with just how far apart I could draw them and still have it look like a solid color so to use as few as possible of the limited amount available to maps.

Even so, I'm not sure how they might look on screens set to different resolutions. Maybe the space between lines might become more or less apparent.

I strongly recommend to do so, especially the amazing level of detail around the eyes should really be enjoyed at full resolution. But first make your guess who that character might be  ;)

So many flattering comments... I thank you all! You make me feel very appreciated for my fan art projects. I'm astonished at times and very grateful for those who leave me comments like Boni's, Eonwind's, and of course all my other old and new PS friends, that encourage me to do more when my time allows.

It seems I spend more time on each one and so they tend to be far between, especially when I'm busy with my other work, and there still seems to be an ever growing list of other's characters that I wish to portray, or am requested to. I regret that I was unable to do the  splash screen for most recent PS update, but I didn't want to rush and produce anything I thought inferior to my capabilities.

I never get tired of your compliments or critique and thank you all again!

Ooops, I almost forgot... the enki is Anysu :)

I draw 'em as I see 'em!  Of course, before I get corrected, I know the character is really smart once others got to know her, but she was also played as incredibly naive and so could give a first impression of simple mindedness which is the fun aspect I was attempting to portray.

Okay, in order to produce some none-spam as well... the reason I keep checking this thread is not to malevolently derail it constantly, but because you're the only one I know who has used or is using my SVG converter tool sometimes, and it's quite amazing what things you can come up with despite the 200 objects limitation. I always love to see when something I made is being used, and even better if it yields awesome results.
