Title: Magic Fair - event announcment
Post by: Mordaan on June 21, 2011, 11:07:21 am
Overview:

When: [Sunday, July 10, 2011 - 1PM ET or 17:00 GMT (events will be ongoing for a few hours probably so join any time).]

Where: Lake of Tears Outpost - Bronze Door Road2

Details:
Advanced mages, wizards in training, novices, or those just curious about magic: All are invited to gather at the Magic Fair to discuss all things magic.  From rare glyphs to interesting spells discovered, from advice on how best to practice your craft to where to get training, whatever questions you have about magic, this will be the place to be.  An educational gathering to share our collected knowledge!

We are inviting at least one master of each way to make a short presentation about that way, discussing its benefits and importance.

OOC:
Inevitably discussion of this type of topic eventually becomes highly OOC.  There are a lot of questions that involve game mechanics, what is implemented, what is not, and plans for what is yet to be implemented.  So we are going to dedicate a segment of the event to all things OOC.  Therefore we can enjoy the event ICly and have a time allotted to discuss all those OOC questions without the need to [] everything.  We also hope to have dev representation to answer some questions (where permitted of course) and listen to feedback.  That is pending approval.

One other OOC note, the outpost is quite the lagfest for many so I hope to be meeting soon to see if we can remove some unnecessary items to improve things a bit.

A discussion thread (http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=39533.0) has been set up for ideas on additional activities.  Comments and suggestions are welcome.

An itinerary of the day's events will be made available here as further details are worked out.

Here is an itinerary of events for the fair.  I thought about putting times, but these things rarely stay on schedule for one reason or another.  But things will start around 1700GMT.

- Opening Remarks
- Introduction of the Masters of the Ways
-- Some words from the masters
-- Q & A for the masters
- Discussion about trainers, glyphs, and spells
- General Q & A
- [OOC Discussion & feedback about the state of magic in game (what you like, what you don't like, what needs attention...)]
- Glyph and magic item auction (market area)
- Fireworks at the lake [aka, how many people can we lag into oblivion?   ;D ]

Also, if you haven't seen yet, click here (http://www.youtube.com/planeshiftofficial#p/a/u/0/Sw5cH7XB5yU) to see what Tuux is working on.   :)

Hope to see you there!

I work that morning, so I may be an hour or two late. But your Red Way Master will be there indefinitely!

Hrm, maybe we should get the OOC discussion out of the way first.  That will give time for all our masters to arrive.  I'll think on it.   :)

If Suno agrees, we could work out a kind of replacement until he arrives, with Mishka and maybe Mariana too answering whatever they could, and leaving the most difficult answers for his char. If he wants.

I hope to be present too, and I can help with Q&A in case any other RW master representative will be missing.

Sure, that'd be cool. If we get a chance to discuss it ICly, Orvine would surely agree, and fill in the blanks where needed.

Thanks for the wonderful event, Diggah enjoyed himself immensely. Much informative discussion, both IC and later OOC. A great variety of spell effects were demonstrated, they are very good quality now. The auction held a few surprises, fireworks display was awesome....... and nobody died.  \\o//  \\o//  \\o//

Uh, wrong ... someone suicided. Completely unnecessarily.

A pity we had no Crystal Way master. But even he would not have been able to resurrect him instantly, I fear.

I was a great event, thanks for organising Mordaan, and thanks to everyone for their participation, it was a great turnout!  \\o//

I was sorry to have to leave before the OOC discussion as I would really have liked to know what was planned next, and before the auction. Alas, I had a pub quiz to give. Looks like I missed out on some great items...

Thanks!

Thanks Mordaan for the hard work. I'm glad I attended the auctions at least.
Thanks Erelenga for the notes.

all OOC remarks here:

i am sorry that i could not make it to the fair as i had IRL things going on at the time :(

i read the logs and i disagree with Gilrond that crystal and dark are not elements

all magic is derived from the crystal, see? crystal way would be the purest form of energy, all other ways are simply spectrums of that same energy, including dark, hence all ways are elements.

it is also said, and not having been discussed that the shadowcaster school will have an opposed school too eventually, same requirements for this school: adept in all ways, master in none. This school (i have been told) will be the most powerfull school and will have spell combinations of supposedly 4 glyphs .

(i have been told so by Rlydontknow)

those are just my 2 coins

It depends from what is for you an "element".
I think you should start a new thread about it.

It's similar to what I meant, but not exactly. Elements by definition mean division. I.e. something whole consisting of its elements. Crystal denotes the collective nature of magic, thus it intrinsically includes them all (all elements). While other 4 are refractions, like you said. You can consider the metaphor of light - pure white includes all colors (which represent its elements). If you are to speak in alchemy terms, there are 4 elements (which denote 4 states of matter), and there is proto element, which produces them, implicitly including them all. So, Azure Crystal represent the inclusive nature, transmitting the magical flow through the elements into the Dark Crystal. Transmitting and receiving paradigms (male and female aspects) are fundamental, so they can be found in any element interactions too. In that sense I called AW and DW special.

not really, the 4 you mention are the elements defined by the Greek, namely Plato....

but in magic there are 5 elements, spirit is also an element :)

why do you think the pentagram is a 5 pointed star.. :)

4 elements are quite universal, not limited to Greek (they are actually found in a whole number of alchemical and mystical schools). They aren't accidental, as I said they correspond to 4 states of matter - solid, liquid, gas and plasma. "Spirit" element is what I meant by protoelement, which is also called "yuli". It stands apart from other 4, because it actually produces them.
