General Discussion / [OSP] Explorer Guided Tours - discussion
« on: July 11, 2009, 12:21:57 pm »
First, please read the announcement here

In this thread, you can discuss the idea and make suggestions on how to make this as interesting and successful as we can.

This is part of the association with the Explorers Guild and the OSP, which brought you the Lake of Tears Outpost.

We intend on starting once a week but if we can get into the swing of things and there is enough interest, we'd like to do tours more often.  We might even entertain the idea of hiring tour guides.  Explorers aren't the only ones who know the land well.

In-Game Roleplay Events / [OSP] Lake of Tears Outpost Grand Opening
« on: May 26, 2009, 11:19:19 am »
[Overview

Date: Saturday, May 30, 2009

Time: 3PM ET  (7PM GMT)

Place to meet: Hydlaa Plaza

Destination: Lake of Tears, Bronze Door Road2]

Details
The turnout for the build was specatular!  I don't think we ever got a full count for the caravan but it was over 30 people.  When we left things, it was nice, but a little scattered and disorganized.  That was to be expected though.  [Hard for us mere players to be good decorators without the mad GM skillz!]  So I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at what you'll see at the Grand Opening!

We will all once again meet at Hydlaa Plaza and once organized (which shouldn't take nearly as long as handing out those items last week), we will have a race to the Lake of Tears.  Winners will recieve cash prizes (will be determined later in the week).  And once at the outpost, food and drinks will be available.

Also, we are looking to stock up on supplies.  So any potions, food and cooking ingredients, etc. you'd like to donate would be appreciated.

So join the big party as we celebrate the establishment of an outpost which will benefit all for a long time to come.  We will also make announcements regarding the first activities to be held at the outpost.

[Overview

Date: Saturday, May 23, 2009

Time: 4PM ET  (8PM GMT)

Place to meet: Hydlaa Plaza

Destination: Lake of Tears, Bronze Door Road2]

Details

As you may have heard, the Explorers Guild with the help of the Octarchal Society for Progress is establishing an outpost near the Lake of Tears.  Saturday will be the build and we need people to help us get the materials from Hydlaa to the Outpost.  Even if you don't move anything yourself, you can witness the groundbreaking and setup of the initial camp.  We will meet at [4PM ET (or 8PM GMT … I hope I converted that right)] and once organized, the caravan will depart for the outpost.  There will be plenty of excitement and activity for all!   Pssst…we're working on a few surprises to make it a memorable event.   ;)

Come join the fun!

[OOC]
Here's what we are thinking: several people will be designated to carry supplies from Hydlaa to the lake.  How much will depend on how many items there are (still being worked out) and how many people there are.  Everyone participating will form a group.  Once there those carrying items will drop your payload and members of Explorers will place them according to our proposed layout.  Then later, we'll tidy up and add those final touches to make the final product.  We'll continue to make enhancements/changes during the week and following week you can join us once again for the official Grand Opening!
[/OOC]

Further details about the Outpost

The Lake of Tears Outpost will be a welcoming camp which will provide a respite for weary travelers between Hydlaa and the Eagle Bronze Doors.  It won't just be purely aesthetic either.  Cooking equipment will be included enabling you to practice your cooking skills.  An anvil may be included as well for some weapons and armor crafting.  It will be particularly convenient for those working with copper since there is a mine very close by (not to mention the nearby carrot patch for the cooks).  The outpost will be open to all.

This outpost will also be the central location for numerous events.  This includes a series of fairs to be held once per month with the following themes:
-Crafting fair (weapons and armor)
-Cooking fair/bake sale (display your favorite culinary creations)
-Mage fair (discuss everything magic)
-Poetry fair (calling all poets!)
-Botany fair (discuss everything about plants and herbs)
-Weapons fair/auction (display and discuss your best crafted and looted weapons)

In addition to monthly events, there will also be wilderness/survival training with such topics as:
- how to recognize herbs, which ones are dangerous and which ones are not?
- how to avoid bandits raids
- how to avoid being attacked by creatures
- how to make a map while traveling
- which are important landmarks one can use to navigate

The Outpost will also serve as grounds for hosting tournaments and organizing group hunts.  Find out all the details at the Grand Opening.

You can witness it from the start on Saturday as the Lake of Tears Outpost gets built.

On Saturday, May 10, 2008, Explorers Guild will be celebrating our 5th anniversary.  The anniversary itself is on Sunday, but the celebration will be on Saturday.  It will be a day long event and we invite all to join us in celebrating one of the oldest guilds in the land.

Planned are a treasure hunt, a Great First Level Race (from Ojaveda to the Eagle's Head), plus a surprise or two, and maybe even a few rounds of HAGS (hide and go seek...the old Explorers tradition).

And yes, in case this sounds familiar, we attempted a 4th anniversary celebration last year but server instability and an untimely update thwarted our efforts.  But this year we are going to make it happen for sure.  As the date approaches, we'll have a few more details so stay tuned here.

Everyone is welcome to join in.

Granted or negated Wishes / NPCs glyph giving-system message
« on: March 12, 2008, 02:06:25 pm »
This is a purely asthetic thing but I thought it deserved a mention and I didn't see anything with a search.

Currently the word "glyph" is left off the system message when an NPC gives you a glyph as part of a quest.
It will say "you have received a _____"

This can lead to some pretty interesting system messages like:

You have received a Death
You have received a Hand
You have received a Mind

and my personal favorite:
You have received a Life   ;D

Perhaps it makes more sense to say ... a ____ glyph ?  Makes things a little more clear.

General Discussion / Explorers Guild Picture of the Week
« on: November 30, 2007, 11:40:08 am »
The Explorers Guild has accumulated a lot of interesting pictures over the years so we decided to start a "Picture of the Week" thread.  We take pride in getting to those hard-to-reach and you're-not-supposed-to-get-there places.  So a lot of those will be posted but it's not necessarily limited to those.  Sometimes we'll just include something interesting we've come across.

Why this section?  This thread could go any number of places, including the guild section, but since the screenshots thread is here, it seemed as good a place as any.  And I didn't want to hijack that thread as it's huge and I didn't want to bury these there.  But if the mods feel differently, I'd understand.

So here we go: this is not the prettiest picture but ................  [drumroll]

One thing we see is snow + fog + flame spire = a not so good graphic effect
But if you look closely, the poor guy passing by below is getting both scorched AND snowed on.   ;D

Wish list / Quests that start in books
« on: November 06, 2007, 11:50:53 am »
The addition of more books in the library made me come up with an idea.  How about quests that start in library books?  Not that you can actually be awarded the quest by reading a book, but rather some information in a book that will lead you to a quest.

For example, a passage in a book may read:
"Legend has it that a rare object of great value can be found in <some location>.  There is a kran merchant often on the road to the bronze doors who knows of such an object.  If you come across him, you may want to ask him about <x>."  Then you get the quest when you ask the NPC about x rather than being able to get it the traditional way of "give me a quest".

For all I know this could already be ingame or in the works...I haven't been to the library lately.   ;)   But I thought I'd mention that idea here.

On May 11, Explorers Guild will be turning 4.  On Saturday the 12th we had planned an ingame celebration for all.  But with the new client imminent and stability/bugs/availability of clients for all platforms all big questions, let alone whether the client will even be available by then, we have tentatively moved the festivities to after the new client is released.

But for now our target is TBA and festivities will include a GM sponsored RP event, a great race from the gates of Ojaveda to the Eagle's Head, and perhaps some other things we can put together, like for instance, a treasure hunt or a game of HAGS (hide-and-go-seek, an old Explorers tradition).  Specific times have not been decided yet but it will be an all-day event to celebrate Explorers four years in Yliakum, giving everyone a chance to join in the fun.

Stay tuned to this thread for further details and updates.  As the day approaches we will announce specific times and locations for you to gather.

Wish list / Sorting in the quest list
« on: April 04, 2007, 02:15:32 pm »
Now that we are going beyond 100 quests ingame, its probably time to add some sorting abilities in the quest list.  Perhaps being able to sort by quest name, order of completion, and maybe even by the NPC starting the quest.

I know inventory has been worked on recently.  Perhaps this was already taken into consideration?  Perhaps its too late to request as this time?  Certainly its more along the lines of "bells and whistles" and not a priority.  But the whole quest/events screen is in need of some work.  Things like making it resizable or changing the font so the quest names will actually fit.   ;)  If this is worked on, maybe its a good time to add some sorting capabilities as well.

Explorers Guild

Overview
The Explorers Guild is a gathering of people from all over Yliakum who love to seek out new and hidden places, to reach new heights and depths—people who desire to travel and see every detail of our world. We stand together to ensure the freedom of this journey, for each other and for all those living with a true spirit of exploration. The solitary soul can find shelter with our Guild, yet there is friendship and fun for those who seek it, and if you are ever lost or need a guide, look no further than the Explorers Guild.
In short, we’re here to see the world and have a blast doing it—together!

History
The Explorers Guild is one of the oldest active guilds in Yliakum.  It was founded on May 11, 2003 by Havena Tanuviel.  After Havena left for the ultimate exploration adventure, to reach the surface, Nilaya Kaeli led the guild until 2007 when she turned leadership over to Mordaan Thakkar.

The Explorers Guild is a true neutral guild, not only in alignment but also with regards to all other guilds in the realms of PlaneShift.

Politics
Unlike many guilds, Explorers will not be given a rank nor duties. You will take orders from no one. That's right—we have no ranks. Explorers are expected to be independent and able to take up challenges on their own—not for the sake of an artificial title, but because it's a part of who they are.

Instead of ranks, the guild is split into several Folds. A fold is a group of Explorers with shared interests, beyond the general bond and goals of all Explorers. Each fold has one or more overseers, who cast the vision for the fold's purpose, and care for its members. New Explorers are free to choose a fold immediately. However, if uncertain, we recommend the Scouts Fold: it provides a wonderful opportunity to become familiar with the land and discover exactly what your interests are. Explorers are free to change folds at any time, though most pick one and stick with that choice.

Folds
  • Wanderers - Recruits awaiting full membership
  • Scouts - Teachers and masters of terrain
  • DepthSeekers - Treasure Hunters and Archaeologists
  • Starlight Hunters - Lightfooted Hunters who live for the chase
  • StrongArm - Warriors of the true nature
  • Artisans - Skilled Craftsmen
  • Valiant Wing - Protecting and healing those in danger

Wish list / Exact change
« on: March 12, 2007, 02:52:41 pm »
Not sure if this has been discussed before but I did a search and didn't see anything...

All too often an NPC asks for x amount of tria for an item and I look in my inventory only to see all I have is circles.  It would be nice if we could make it so that either NPC's give us change when we give larger denominations or even better, if we could drop, for example, a circle on the octas slot and make 5 octas in place of the circle.  In other words we could drop any larger coin in one of the other slots and if an exact multipe, create the equivalent number of the smaller coins.

I also noticed from the cvs history that some work on stacking has been done lately.  Any chance we can soon pick up x amount from a stack rather than be forced to take the whole thing or nothing?  I recently encountered someone who dropped some ore because their magic wore off and they dropped the whole pile.  They couldn't pick it up and asked how they could just pick up what they could carry and leave the rest.  I just had to say it wasn't possible.  Seems that shouldn't really be that way.  Any plans in the works to fix that?

General Discussion / Where were you last?
« on: June 26, 2006, 03:43:56 pm »
Didn't want to get off topic so I decided to make a new one.  From the 'update is coming' post I got a good idea from one of the posts there:  to ask..  (Since the game is down and to pass time and all)
Where were you last?
That is, where was your character the last time you were in game (main character or all) and what were you doing?

For instance, I'll start...

Best I can remember Mordaan was just to the right of the Broken Door Tavern in Ojaveda, having completed all the quests that start there.  I finally started quests and have completed 10 of them so far.
