Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game /
« on: July 22, 2005, 11:29:13 pm »
The server was down due to a faulty CPU fan. This caused the machine to shut down automatically 3 times in the past week.

On the first occasion we were notified about 1 day after the server stopped responding. We do not actively keep tabs on the server but I check my e-mail very frequently and we did not hear anything until about 24 hours after the shutdown.

The second time the server went down was about 3 days after the first instance. We sent in a restart request a few hours after I noticed the server went down.

However, the server went down again 1 hour after the 2nd reboot. I went to the data centre a few hours later to look at what went wrong. The problem was identified soon after and I swapped out the faulty CPU fan.

Granted we ought to keep tabs on the server, some of the comments here make it seem that our server shuts itself down on a weekly basis. You\'d notice that our uptime is actually pretty decent based on statistics at http://gandalf.fragnetics.com/status/system/proc.html

We had intended to swap out the CPU fan sometime last year but decided against it then. This problem is likely to surface again in about 1 year but I think we know what to do should something similar happen again. The fan gets spoilt more easily when the server is heavily utilized, and the recent increase in CPU usage by the PS server accelerated this process. My bad for not realizing it might have been due to this problem earlier - we have some experience with faulty CPU fans.

Not Christmas please? Cuz if anything goes wrong with the server I wouldn\'t want any of our guys to be popping by the data centre to do any maintenance. Even if we have to we won\'t. Also, there is a maintenance window at the data centre on 26 Dec, so I\'m hoping any release would avoid these 2 days like the plague.

Could I suggest a feature? That is a flag such as --verifyall so that the updater can download missing critical files? I just tried an update that broke the updater and the zip I found on the server couldn\'t save it - it\'s still broke. :(

Would it be possible in the near future to have the updater as a standalone executable that does not depend on other libraries? My opinion is that something along the lines of the Valve Steam updater executable (just 1 file) is actually a good thing.

It\'s reasonable for the game to require many libraries during startup but for an updater to depend on libraries that could end up breaking the updater itself is a little queer. A suggestion would be that the updater should keep a backup of itself just in case the newly downloaded updater fails to work.

Seeing that this updater problem has happened to others as well, could this be a design issue since I\'ve not seen updaters break themselves before? If it can\'t be done then could the updater be released as a separate download on the main website once CB is released? ?(

I\'m pretty sure there will be mirrors. So don\'t worry about it.

We don\'t have exact numbers at the moment but I estimate we should be able to easily handle a few hundred users at the same time. Maybe more.

Just FYI the server is:
Pentium 4 2.66GHz (B)
1GB ECC PC-2100 DDR-SDRAM
2x 80GB IDE HDDs

Not a particularly strong machine - I\'m sure a lot of you have better systems at home, but I think it should hold up fairly well. The harddisks are not mirrored so it should be possible to keep an archive of the database and other crucial files.

A1: To begin with, it\'ll be hosted on the same server as MB is now, but if it takes too much traffic, they will move it to a more powerful, independant server.

A2: It\'s gone.

Some corrections:

The CB server is weaker than the original MB server in terms of hardware. However, the entire machine is dedicated to CB, which will mean no contention of system resources. CB is run on a dedicated server.

As for the MB server, Fragnetics will continue to use it for its web hosting operations. Right now both servers are connected to the same uplink, so there should be no difference in terms of connectivity between the MB and CB servers.

If CB gets really big, there is a chance that a provider in another geographical region will host an additional instance of CB.

I like --auto... For the uninitiated you wouldn\'t know how many times the graphical client has crashed on me. *nudges blueCommand*

While the file mentioned looks like a pre-release version, that copy of PS isn\'t going to be very useful because it\'s probably outdated. I say... With the MB server being taken down and a proper CB release along on the way there is truly no need to get overly enthusiastic. It\'ll be released when it\'s done! And the official website will be the most reliable place to get it.

Really creative stuff...
Perhaps you should make a branch of PlaneShift that does this  :D

Based on the first round of testing (which I was involved in), my personal recommendation is that CB should slip for the time being. I haven\'t tried the latest version though, so I don\'t claim to know the current situation, but I think that getting a better quality demo out would be preferable since there is no financial pressure or deadlines that the team has to meet.

You know, just to ruffle some features, I do vaguely recall this bandwidth discussion on IRC which Grono and myself were engaged in, but the only thing I can really agree with is the part of her statement which goes \"people have seriously misunderstood something\".

Broadband is about using multiple frequencies to send signals. A DSL line typically has a number of channels. One of them is assigned to voice (telephone), while the rest is divided among upstream and downstream so you get these multiple channels, hence the term \"broad\"+\"band\"...

But I think Wikipedia explains this better
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadband
if we really want to be very nitpicky about this.

If there is such a thing, it wont exactly be easy to find, simply because the asian culture is based around the idea of practicing what you want to be good at, day after day after day, in a drone-like fashion, so of course their games reflect this style of play. However, should you find a real MMORPG, that is asian, you had better tell me where it is, or else...! :)

Interestingly the PlaneShift server you\'re connected to is hosted in Asia. Well I don\'t know about you, but branding \"Asian\" MMORPGs as \'boring\' seems like prejudice itself! While I\'m not an intensive MMORPG gamer, I do agree that a lot of MMORPGs I see are centred around levelling etc. They need not be Asian of course, since the first thing that comes to mind when I think of powerlevelling is Diablo. I feel that there is an ingrained culture here (in Asia) where intense diligence and  hardwork, which you casually label as \'drone-like\', seems to be the order of the day at least in East Asian countries such as China, Korea, Japan. This results in gameplay you don\'t like, but conversely, I am sure that lots of Asians who play this way wouldn\'t give 2 hoots about someone who\'s widely loved by the community and yet doesn\'t put 24 hrs into the game. The dislike works both ways.

While I would love to embrace all-encompassing statements about Asian MMORPGs such as how they can be \'boring\' and duplicates of each other, I think that the international reach of a number of MMORPGs and their inherent popularity speak for themselves - FFXI for instance. East Asia is the centre for MMORPG development. The most avid gamers, and those who play other games professionally, put an immense number of hours into training. I don\'t see why it would be deplorable for someone to do the same for PS, although I think a balance of mingling with other players should be required for someone to have more influence in-game.

I\'d like to suggest that your gripe is not entirely about being afraid of powerlevelling, but more that you\'d like to see a PlaneShift that is centred around the community, or politics ;) . Because of your bias against powerlevellers, which you rightly pinpoint come mostly from Asia, you need to feel comfortable entrenched in the mindset that PlaneShift is *only* about how you get around in the community.

We haven\'t got CB out of the door yet, but it\'s amazing the amount of speculation that I\'m seeing about how some people prefer PlaneShift run. Frankly speaking, I doubt any of us have a clue how it would turn out, although it is good to have aspirations and be involved in its development to influence what it becomes for everyone.

It\'s likely to be a problem with the DNS server you\'re using or your ISP.
