Single Author Stories / PlaneShift ? Quest of Lineage
« on: February 11, 2003, 04:48:32 pm »
As promised long ago, here is an edited version of the short story that I posted in the \"famous \" thread of the PS General Discussion forum:

http://www.tritek.com/dev/planeshift/ps_story_01.pdf

I figured that I better post this before my mind gets corrupted by NDA material and I am tempted to change the story with non-public info.  I\'m not sure if many people read it the first time (only two responded), but I would appreciate it if any of you guys interested in PS fiction would give me your thoughts/criticisms.

The Hydlaa Plaza / Best Linux Games Ever!
« on: February 11, 2003, 03:19:42 pm »
With the recent rash of posts concerning \"Who plays ...\" and the fact that PS won the 2003 most promising Linux Game award, I thought I would post about the best free Linux games IMO (that are not \"tech demos\"  ;) ):

Frozen Bubble : An excellent puzzle game that will keep you addicted for years on end.

Jump n\' Bump : Has the hottest multiplay gaming out there.  Who can resist the urge to rend your fellow gamers when they look cute little bunnys!  Be warned, the gore can be too intense for the younger audiences.

General Discussion / Big website settings descrepency.
« on: January 12, 2003, 03:51:30 pm »
Setting Question, for anyone who knows the answer:

From the PS website settings section, the light of the Azure Sun is described as follows:

The Crystal draws its light from the surface and thus Yliakum is subjected to times of \"day\" and \"night\". However even while at night, it is not completely dark.

But, the \"intro\" Flash city tour says this:

The light shed by the Crystal is almost constant, so there are no subdivisions such as \"night\" or \"day\", made totally unsusful because the energy irradiated allows the citizens not to have to sleep.

So, which is correct?  I\'ve been writing a little fiction for the PS universe and this a pretty big discrepency.  Also, if the surface is ever \"rediscovered\", will you have to sleep up there?  What about if you stay a while in the Stone Labyrinths (not in the crystal\'s light)?

I appologize if this question has been asked/answered before, but if it has it should be corrected on the site.

General Discussion / The Planeshift Trademark
« on: January 09, 2003, 03:11:07 pm »
I have question about the Plainshift name.  I know that Plainshift is an international \"entity\", but how does this effect the copyright and trademarking issues?  The name Planeshift is Tradmarked in the US by Wizards of the Coast (owners of DND and Magic the Gathering).  This is not a software package granted (more of a book and card series), but they are both fantasy oriented and legal troubles may arise latter if the game actually gets big.  It would not be very hard for them to cite confusing terms and start grabbing fan domains, etc.

Wish list / customizable spell effects
« on: December 18, 2002, 01:26:59 pm »
I just had a random idea.  How about customizable spell visual effects?  Nothing big, just a few simple parameters allowing characters to change the color or patern of the particle effects in select spells.  Allows characters to role play a liitle more and customize their char.  An example would be a wizard named Flame who\'s spells take more of a red hue. Or a wizard named Chaos who\'s particles tend toward multi-color and have a greater threshhold factor for the particle path.  Obviously, not all spells would be able to be changed and magic paths would have to be taken into consideration.  What do you guys think?

General Discussion / Hacking & Cheating
« on: December 16, 2002, 07:23:54 pm »
With all the stuff that MMOGs are going through now-a-days, I was just wondering how (or if) the dev team is combating cheating in a OSS environment.  Beyond a \'trust you players\' system, do you just make the client as light as possible (i.e. just key-frame interpolation, etc.)?  How do you keep out Bots?
