Expressing Emotions
« on: March 25, 2003, 09:52:46 pm »
Aside from certain gestures like sit and bow... what do you think of characters being able to express emotions?

In certain anime-ish mmorpg, players are able to express themselves using those comic bubbles (question mark, angry cloud, love heart, smiley face,.....)

For planeshift, we can instead have specific race animations...

For example,
Tiger:
Anger = Show teeth
Happiness = smile
Funny = Grabs chest, laughing
Love: red face (blush)

Giant:
Anger = Steam coming from ears
Happiness = smile
Funny = Laugh, stomping on ground
Love = red face (blush)

I\'m just giving crappy examples... but wouldn\'t it be really cool if the emotion-animations were well implemented?

Have you ever played Project Entropia? Despite all that game\'s faults, it has amazing animations and character design.  You can dance (8 different ways) scratch your butt, smile, bow, propose marriage. It\'s pretty awesome. If stuff like that could be implemented (not now, obviously, as it would take time from important things), it would be cool.

You will never be there.
Although you may strive to get there,
upon reaching there you will realize you are really here.
And there is everywhere else.

absolutely, I was playing last night, and I was thinking that would be cool as well. Like you could sit and meditate (or just rest). Or if your hight enough in magic and you learn the art, you could float/sit... that would rock... and while you float/sit, you character sings like some westminister abby monk like song.  Ya that would be cool.

The animation i would love to see implemented would be the ability to lean against the wall and equip a pipe and tip your hat or whatever you are wearing on your head to cover your eyes and your character blows smoke rings 8)

Yes, it\'s details like that I want to see  :)
How about a mini-game where you can challenge another player for a smoke-ring contest? (or not) ;)

I used to play one game called Graal Online and to display the emoticon in a bubble above your head, you\'d just press a key on the keyboard, like so:

Z: snore
D:  :D
W:  ;)
T:  ;(
Ect.

We could also try something like Phantasy Star Online...

imagine, custom animations, where you can have an editor program, where you can animate a skeleton of the character, and create custom movements, so you can have \"give someone the finger\" or do a nice double take :D custom animations would be so cool...

we jumped waaaaaaaay far ahead of ourselves

it would be awesome to have these, but.. we cant have it all, just a few primitive animations would be fine for a long timer :P

as you said

steming ears
red face
teeth showing
smiles

its things like that, just a few primitive things, sitting, lieing down (in the inn) and so on, just a few things like that :D

Yeah, what would a game be without obscene gestures?
