Roleplaying (Communitive Storywriting) / Arka's Return 3: The Reckoning
« on: September 10, 2007, 05:33:34 pm »
Dear Reader,

After a long absence from this board I have decided to pick up my quill again. It's time to lay this particular story to rest.

For those of you too young to remember, or those of you too old not to have forgotten, you may wish to visit the previous volumes in this Trilogy (Yes this really is the final episode). They can be found at

 Arka's Return
and
Arka's Return 2: The Tower

For those of you of just the right age to remember or too curious to spend time revising, here is a taster. I hope you enjoy reading as much as I have enjoyed living it.

Arka

The Reckoning

Part 1: Prologue
Many months have passed since Arka’s encounter with the evil Dermorian, Sudisir. Nothing more was seen of him since his fall from the Tower and in time he slipped from memory. But Arka still had an uneasy feeling; he was never far from her thoughts, and this tormented her secretly. She could not explain it but she knew he would be back one day and that she had her greatest challenge ahead of her.

Not long after the tower-top battle, Drahlian had led the Dwarvesbane against Hammerwielders and Stonebreakers alike, in what had become to be known as the ‘Dwarven Wars’. Because of her position at the University, Arka had played no part in the wars, although she itched to fight alongside her Dwarven brothers and grieved to see so many of them fall. One by one, her students left the University to join the Dwarven Star and fight against Drahlian’s evil hordes. Many of them did not return.

Eventually, the Dwarvesbane were defeated and Dwarven Star was disbanded. Peace reigned again, but the episode had left Arka deeply troubled. She was sure that the wars had been stirred up by Sudisir and that he had intended to use the slaughter of her brethren to draw Arka into another direct confrontation. She had resisted, but not without deep feelings of guilt and responsibility. She was convinced that this was Sudisir’s revenge for being almost destroyed by her.

After the wars, nothing more was heard of Dwarvesbane, nor Sudisir. Arka became more and more involved in her teaching duties at the University, spreading knowledge of the Stonebreaker language and culture to anyone who was interested. She spent her evenings poring over her mother’s notebooks, gradually piecing together the history of the Stonebreakers, as related by the elders of her clan.

Then the day came when Lordbug retired as Director of the University, and Arka took his place. She continued to teach Stonebreaker, but more and more of her time was taken up with University business. As time went by she felt more confident with her position at the University and to her students and colleagues appeared calm and relaxed. But hardly a week went by without the dreams that had tortured her since that day on the Tower top, each one ending with the disappearance of Sudisir’s body. And each time, Arka woke, sweating and afraid. Very afraid…

In-Game Roleplay Events / A Student disappears [RP]
« on: December 10, 2006, 04:30:16 am »
Arka was about to turn in for the night when she saw the light burning in the Faculty of Great Sciences and Craftings. Dean Hius Mius was away on business, she was sure he wouldn't have returned so early. A student must have left a lantern lit.

Tutting to herself, she climbed the steps to the Faculty library. She would have to have a word with Hius. His students were not the best behaved, but to leave a flame burning in the Library, of all places! The University had only just recovered from the last fire.

The heavy oaken door opened with a creak. Arka spotted the figure of a dwarf hunched over a great tome at the far end of the room. He glanced up, and Arka saw the flash of fear in his eyes. It was Einnol! But what would her language student be doing in this Faculty?

Quick as a flash, Einnol slammed the great book shut. Clouds of dust rose from its leather bindings. Then he was on his feet, sprinting for the door.

"Einnol?"

He was running straight for her. She put up her hands in a gesture for him to stop but instead, he cannoned into her, sending her reeling back against the wall. Then he disappeared into the darkness.

Arka picked herself up and made her way to the light at the end of the room. She lifted the light to look at the book Einnol had been poring over. She read the embossed words on the cover: "Greate Glyphes of the Worlde: Good and Evil"

What would Einnol want with a book about Glyphs? And why was he in such a hurry to leave? It was so out of character - what had possessed him? Arka wished her Dean was here to explain the significance of the book. That would have to wait. There was no point running after Einnol now - he could be almost anywhere. Taking the lantern with her, she left the library, locking the doors behind her. She would need to take more care about who was allowed in here, she decided.

She would make some enquiries in the morning. For now she just needed to sleep...

Arka walks up to the notice board, a little nervously. She doesn't often post public notices, but this one is special.

From her satchel she takes a sheet of parchment and four small nails. Using the flat of her axe-blade, she nails the notice to the board. Stepping back she takes a final look to make sure the notice is straight, smiles and heads off back to the University.

Single Author Stories / Arka's Return 2: The Tower
« on: April 14, 2006, 04:48:06 pm »
Part 1: Prologue

The story so far: Arka Garam, only daughter of Embra and Golthart Garam, returns to Yliakum after many years wandering the Stalagtite, to find her parents dead and her childhood home destroyed by Ulbernauts. She resolves to find out who was responsible but is set upon by robbers. Befriended by the menkie, Lordbug, she tracks down the evil dermorian, Sudisir, who had led the robbers and also (Arka believes) was behind the destruction of her village and the death of her clansfolk.
After an epic battle, Sudusir is subdued and captured and handed over to the Vigesimi. He is tried and found guilty of robbery and conspiracy to murder and sentenced to death.

Arka is invited to join the Guild of Knowledge Seekers, where she can continue her mother?s work; translating the epics and sagas of her people, the Stonebreakers and creating a dictionary so that the ancient language of Stonebreaker, Pel Perrakithor might not be lost.

Finally, Arka feels her journey is over and she settles into a life of academia at the University of Yliakum. But fate has a way of upsetting the balance, and Arka?s troubles were far from over. In fact, they were just beginning?

Roleplaying (Communitive Storywriting) / Arka's Return
« on: December 02, 2005, 02:58:03 pm »
Part One: Awakening

Arka woke to a cold, wet dawn. The tree she had crawled under last night offered no shelter from the rain. She was wet to the skin and cold to the bone. Worse still was the humiliation. She had travelled the whole stalactite over during her long life, and survived almost intact. She had encountered Rogues, thieves and vagabonds, but had always managed to defend herself. But last night?

And to happen within sight of the place of her youth, Hydlaa! She tried to move but her legs were stiff and painful. Rolling up the leg of her breeches she saw the bruises, blue and yellow, on her shins. Her ribs ached. She had taken a bad beating. She should have stayed in Akkaio, should have taken a room at the night in th? Broken Door. She had the money for it, but not now. She looked around. Her possessions were scattered around where the Robbers had left them. Clothes, books, trinkets, all trodden into the mud. She checked her satchel. Inside was the tight wad of papers, wrapped in Tefusang skin. She sighed. At least she still had that. All was not lost.

She painfully massaged her legs back to life. Nothing broken, except maybe a rib or two. The leather armour had helped, until they had taken it off her. Then the tall one had come back and kicked her in the ribs. That was when she blacked out.

She crawled about gathering together what was left. There was a shawl, big enough to use as a makeshift backpack. Some of her mother?s jewellery, her clothes, a pair of boots (obviously too small for the Robbers) a belt, and her precious package. That was all she had left in the world. The Great Axes that she had worked on so diligently as an apprentice, they were gone. She fought back a tear, remembering her father?s pride when she had shown them to him. He?d kept them all that time. All the years she had been wandering over the Stalactite....

Wish list / Town Cryer
« on: September 28, 2005, 01:57:33 pm »
OK. This is kind of a new idea and an old one rolled into one:

1. An NPC that responds to simple requests like \'Where do I find rats?\' With simple answers like, \'Have you tried the sewers? There are lots down there, I\'m told.\'

For more complex questions he/she would answer \"Have you tried the Help channel? There are lots of people more qualified than I that can help you.\"

This would save us from newbies wandering around asking \"What do I do here?\" \"How do I make money?\" \"Where did you get your sword from?\" and more annoyingly, \"Can I have yours?\"

2. Occasionally the NPC can make random announcements using the shout channel. This can also be used when devs are about to close the server to make more fiitting announcements than the current \"The  Server is about to shut down\" type. How about, \"Hear Ye! Hear Ye! A great misfortune is about to descend on our land. This will cause darkeness and confusion to all who do not log off now. Come back in 10 minutes!\" People could occasionally petition GMs to allow guild announcements to be made or announce forthcoming festivals at regular intervals. I realise this could get annoying but you could experiment with the number of such announcements so gamers only heard three or four per log in.

3. (And here\'s the old idea) The Town Cryer can also be asked to store messages for individual players. You could say, \"Take a message for xxxx\". The NPC checks that xxxx is a) a real player and b) offline, giving suitable error messages like \"Never heard of xxxx - are you sure that\'s the real name? or \"Tell xxxx yourself!\". Then when xxxx logs on the Town Cryer /tells xxxx the message or alternatively stores the message untill xxxx approaches him/her and asks \"Any messages?\" (Whichever is easiest to implement - but my preference is the former)

Messages can auto delete after a certain number of days - The Town Cryer does forget things like the rest of us.

This would help those of us who desperately need to get a message to someone but don\'t have any other way of contacting them. It could be used to arrange rendez-vous times and places. And it would be in keeping with the gameplay.

What d\'ye all think?

:)

Wish list / A level playing (fighting) field
« on: May 10, 2005, 06:01:20 pm »
As you progress in axe or sword or melee skill you become able to fight the more \'challenging\' monsters. However it becomes ridiculously easy to kill lesser monsters. This means that new players with less skill get crowded out of the easy areas (like the Tef arena) by more able players.

My idea is this. Make the less strong monters sensitive to the power of the attacker. This means that instead of attacking they run away. The threshold could be set to different levels for different monsters so that (for example) everything but the most powerful monsters run away from a player fighting at level 70.

Hitting a moving target takes more skill so more experienced players would have more difficulty attacking an easy target than a new player. This would encourage them to take on creatures of a higher power, leaving the easier ones to newer players.

In a group, the monster would react to the player with the highest skill so run away from him/her. This could make for interesting tactics when fighting in groups!
