Name taken?!?

As you can see, the forum name I use is Ariel Arilon.

So when I created my first character I was going to use the same name.

When I typed in the first name, it said it was already taken.

"No problem," I thought, "Ariel is a fairly common name, but the last name 'Arilon' I am sure won't be since it is from an obscure game, defunct now for some 6 or 7 years, and holds a special place in my heart."

I typed in "Arilon" for the last name.

"Name Taken"

What?!? How?

Could it be that when I registered for a forums account, that name became a "taken" name on the game server?

Or did someone use actually use 'Ariel Arilon' some time ago?

I honestly don't know how all this stuff works. I just poke at my keyboard until something breaks. ^_^

I think forum accounts are independent, and player characters must have unique first names. That's because some commands (chat, grouping, moderation) use only the first name to define the target.

Maybe some admin could look up for how many years the already registered"Ariel" character has been inactive.

Probably the easiest solution will be to try a different way to spell your name, though, it is well possible that quite a few of these variations will be taken already as well.

Happened to me as well. I even met this dwarf once who "stole" my nick... okay, he was first. But I bet this character is inactive for much more than 3 years already.

Sometimes the database is cleared of characters not used for a long time, to free up unused names and other space. But very, very rarely. The last time that happened is already several years ago.
