I BET if I made a game with no way to know where you are, you'd be the first to complain, and if the npc's didn't understand YOU, you'd be ticked off too.  Just cause you wrote it that way doesn't make it the right way.

Ahh, you really do seem to be missing something, I didnt write it, I just play it OK? I joined, found all the same game mechanics you found, and adapted my play style to suit. Yes I wandered off into the wilderness my second time, umm, there are roads! I walked all the way to BD from Hydlaa without getting seriously lost, having a map or getting directions from anybody.

The NPC's were irritating, but I do understand this is a beta and not a polished release, I eventually learned how to communicate by putting in a bit of time and effort.

At least in runescape I can set out to do something and do it.

If a game is to easy to play it loses all attraction pretty quickly unless you have a very short attention span, PS is not a game to jump into and become an uber mage/warrior etc in a  few days, in fact it does take a lot of work to gain levels, and more imprtantly, to gain the respect of other players, those people you seem to regard so highly but would never be seen dead or alive in Runescape. Aren't they enough of an attraction to keep you in PS? If not then I expect you are placing to much emphasis on wrong aspects of the game.

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: Ehm...where is my tutorial??? O_o

if you make more then one char the second and after chars dont go though the tutorial.

Yes, a very good idea, however if it's a problem you can always start again by creating another login and from a blank sheet as it were.

Okay, actually the worst thing is there is no map! zip! nada!
[...]
the creator pretty much flatly refuses! "There will be no maps, because they ruin roleplaying!  Exploring is fun!"

It seems to me that this gets repeated quite a bit, but really, there are maps.
I'll admit there's not too many, they're not always helpful, they can be hard to find and the sketching system can use some more improvements. It's being worked on.
But using the tools available in-game right now, it is possible to create a good, detailed and accurate map. If you can't find one, make one.

I supect the OP has a different concept of "map" than what you are discussing, AKA the traditional "reveal" map that appears under the tab key of many other exploration games that unshadows territory as you traverse it to reveal the landscape details and remains forever once you have it revealed, rather than the traditional paper map, whch as you say do exist even in public from places like Jayose's. thisis the type of map the OP wants and the Devs are determined not to have, I agree with them, I can just see every new player walking around in a grid pattern revealing all the maps so they no longer have to think.

I used PPs on learning things and when server went down I was reset outside Hydlaa, things Id learnt were "unlearnt but PPs still gone. Hmm, not happy 28 PPs lost!

Yes it seems a tragic loss, I would give you some of mine but they don't appear to be tradable, I have over 6,000 pp. It does seem to be a balance issue, PP are so hard to come by at the beginners level that it becomes a burden just to gather enough to advance another level, but once past a certain level gathering pp becomes so easy it is a trivial excercise, so keep going and one day you will find yourself wondering why you were ever concerned over the loss of 28pp.

I suspect there was a small rollback when the game crashed to fix a database problem and siince the two things are probably recorded in seperate databases they weren't kept the same. But I can assure you this is not a comon occurance, probably more likely just now because of the release of Steel Blue, bt it has never happened to me once while I have been playing.

So until the Death Realm dies, maps appear (or at least a compass, and npc's can understand SOMETHING I say to them, I am affraid I will be found on Runescape!

Well that's the entire point isn't it? if you want to play Runescape, play Runescape, if youwant ot play Planeshift play Planeshift.

I agree wih Jeraphon here, because it doesn't conform to your idea of what a RPG should be like (Runescape), you think it should be changed to a 3D clone of Runescape. It's a different game, with different gameplay dynamics.

What is odd, is that it has many really tall rock spires scattered around the landscape, but they all look similar enough that they do not help with direction.

Which just goes to show that you never really understood the game at all. Saying the rock spires (actually stalagmites!) all look the same fits into the same category as saying all pine trees look the same, they are supposed to look the same, they are the same thing. And it's not at all odd to have stalgmites and stalactites in a cave. Planeshift is designed and aimed at poeple who want to explore and find things out for themselves just as they would have to do if they were a real person suddenly transported to a different realm.

Have fun in Runescape, I tried it once, it just seemed utterly pointless and completley full of flaws and after a few minutes I simply couldnt stand it, they should change to be just like Planeshift, only 2D, then I would have stayed longer LOL

Simply because there's so many looted items, and not enough need.  It would put us in nearly the same situation as having infinite weapons available.  If someone goes off and farms the rogues in Oja, they'll get more weapons than they know what to do with, and with the near constant farming of those rogues, would lead to a massive glutton on the market.

Well that's exactly how it should work. If there is a massive glut on the market the prices would drop so low as to make farming the rogues not worth it. People could then go off and hunt animals for body parts and furs.

In addition, would the 'special' weapons (like Broadsword of Seduction, or an Icy Dagger) be available for purchase if one was sold to an NPC?  That could get complicated and hairy, if one has to scroll down several pages worth of Copper, Bronze, Stone, etc. weapons to find the one they may want (not to mention keeping tract of everything).

Should special and magical weapons be in the same category as standard weapons anyway? Also wouldn't it be more likely that a blacksmith wouldn't stock these sorts of weapons, they would only be sold by a specialist arms dealer not an ordinary blacksmith.

However all arguments of balancing aside, the economy of Yliakum us simply not large and diverse enough to support most of these ideas, for an economy to naturally balance itself there has to be enough range of money earning trades and spending opportunites to provide a good feedback system, trying to create a feedback loop on a system with only one or two inputs will naturally result in wild oscillations. Again it's just another sign of a game in Beta development, give the devs a chance to implement a few more strands to the economy before worrying to much about balance

I have previously tried to install the game, but couldn't get it to work. So today I completely uninstalle and reinstalled the game and followed on site directions.

I ran the updater fine (using Run as Administrator), but when I go to run the psclient it gives me this error message:

Something unexpected happened in PlaneShift: Blue Steel
Details: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION at 0388A4C0 (though the number isn't always the same)

Would you like to save the diagnostic file?

I am running Windows Vista with 1918Ram, AMD Athlon 64x2 processor.

I have searched through the forums and the technical FAQ on the main site and can't seem to figure it out. Please help!

Rizin is correctr, but there are two ways to get it to run on Vista, given that you have a vidcard capable, you didn't mention what vid card you had.

As already suggested, right click on the planeshift icon and click advanced, then "run as administrator"

However you can also get around this by changing the install path to C:\ instead of C:\program files during the install  process.

Oh He has Windows XP and he dosent know the rest... srry

Then we can't help, there are to many variables to try and guess his problem.

Now do this, click start->run enter the word "dxdiag" (without the quotes) this will start the windows xp diagnostic program. The first page will have his basic hardware, Motherboard, CPU, memory etc, post that here, also go to the display tab and read what it says under device, post that here with the rest.

General Discussion / Re: I need directions (Read First)

I liked a map function that I have seen in several games that works like this: there is a map that sections are uncovered by having your chr travel trough them.  Important sites are either marked by the game designer (easiest for both of us) or the player can make a mark on the map and label it themselves.  Some games even allow sharing of map areas, so if I meet someone and they want to share their map with me, the program mutually uncovers areas on both our maps that we have been to (including labels).

Hmmm, no, don't like at all. Seriously, this is about roleplaying, not uncovering maps.

Yes I have played thiose games also, Diablo 2, Dungeon Seige and etc, and the map idea fitted in because the game is about exploring and killing everthing in sight that looks nasty, there was no roleplay. PS is more about the players and how they interact. At the moment it's relatively easy to find your way between the major towns and locations in PS so I don't see a need for a map.

Having a map system like you suggest would, in fact, end up with everybody having a god like lnowledge of the entire world of PS, that sort of knowledge should be reserved for people who put in the time to explore and either draw their own maps or remember it themselves.

General Discussion / Re: Alchemist as career

This is something that is yet to be brought out into the open as yet. I have found nearly a dozen ingredients but no information as to what to do with them. I haven't looked very hard and it is uncertain whether they are alchemical, herbalistic, brewing or cooking ingredients or any combination of the above.

The descriptions on some of the new plants certainly claim they are of use in potions and other possibky alchemical processes.

Same issue here, on XP SP2.  I tried walking anyways and am now stuck for fear of my character dying.

Same here in Vista, however don't worry about dying, falling through the hole near the entrance will drop you straight into the BD fortress, a very quick trip    Unfortunately at the time I dropped through it I was heading back to Hydlaa, and had to do the trip all the way from the fortress again.  ???

You should be able to just restore your computer's memory to a checkpoint made a few days ago. You'd have to redownload the SB client, but you should have CB back, along with your screenies.

No you wouldn't, unfortunately system restore doesn't store user data, only windows data so CB woluldn't be back.

Where are the "logs" in version 0.4.00? i don't find them...

They have been moved from the game folder to the user folder, in Vista look in c:\documents and settings\your user name\application data\planeshift. A similar location should be found for XP, and oh yes "application data" is a hidden folder so you will need to turn on "show hidden files and folders" to see it.
