This also seems to be happening on my linux64 install, the reverting caused massive hard drive access slowing computer response noticeably.
After making pslaunch.bin executable program ran. The update did not go through, the application reports 0.5.8.1.
the update was not offered again and it seems the reversion wiped out all user files in ~/.PlaneShift/ or at least the saved user/name password.

The binaries are still version 0.5.8.1; version 0.5.8.2 is related to the data.

Make sure pslaunch, pslaunch.bin, psclient and psclient.bin are executable.
The updater seems to like removing the executable flag happens almost every update for me.

chmod +x pslaunch pslaunch.bin psclient psclient.bin

Did the trick, didn't need special permissions to do that, so I wonder why updater didn't make it.
