Dev Q&A August 25th 2019
« on: August 26, 2019, 03:25:42 am »
Uadjet says: Hello and welcome to the Developer's Q&A! Here you can hear about the development of the game and ask the Dev and GM teams any questions you might have.
Uadjet says: If you have a question, please line up at the podium just in front of the stage.
Gonger says: Most welcome, Waesed. It has been some time.
Gonger says: To your health, brodr.
Uadjet says: You have a question?
Damola nods
Uadjet says: We're all ears. :
Uadjet says: :)
Zweitholou cups hands around where his ears should be.
Damola says: Damola was fighting training dummies with a quarterstaff and I found that even with a bloody stance she could go on like this forever (or well until the dummy is demolished), Physical Stamina regenerating quicker than it is used.
Uadjet says: Actually, two thirds of us don't have ears. Awkward.
Damola says: Is that intentional?
Uadjet says: Does that vary by weapon?
Damola says: I'd think that after some time of handling the staff even a good fighter would be exhausted by some time.
Damola says: I only used the Quarterstaff so far.
Uadjet says: That's certainly the case with most weapons. I know bloody stance usually drains stamina rather quickly.
Waesed says: I think it would depend on your stats
Damola can go on like this for a long time which is obviously good for leveling
Damola says: Well, Damola has endurance almost maxed, but, still. After a longer time I'd expect her to be exhausted.
Damola says: Instead I watch her hitting the training dummy until its demolished.
Damola says: Still having full P. Stamina afterwards
Uadjet says: Yes, you'd get the benefit of faster attacking speed with no limit. Still, I seem to recall it has the 2-Handed flag applied so it still won't be faster training than most other weapons.
Mordaan says: Probably something that could use a balance tweak.
Damola says: well it justs gives 2 or 3 practice points per hit
Damola says: Just mentioning. Of course I like it that way, makes leveling a bit easy not having to cast relaxing sleep in between
Damola says: Well, that was Q1. Anyone a Q?
Uadjet says: Waesed?
Waesed says: I don't seem to be getting anything for music training.
Damola says: After stopping playing music after you played for a longer time?
Damola says: Checking.
Waesed says: Yup, nothing at all, even with different music
Damola says: Hmm, strange. Works for me. 6 PP and 24 practice points in musical instruments
Uadjet says: That's unusual. Are you using a renamed instrument, by chance? I don't think they even work, but I thought I should ask.
Waesed says: what level are you? I'm 92 and 116 with buffs
Damola says: just 55
Uadjet says: You should get training just after the music stops, either on its own or when you hit the stop button.
Damola says: What instrument did you use?
Uadjet says: Are you moving while playing? Closing the music window?
Damola says: Is it possible to move while playing? I thought it was not.
Waesed says: standard lute- I did have that trouble before with a renamed one not working
Damola says: hm
Gonger says: Let somebody else try your instrument and your sheet
Damola nods "That may be an idea."
Gonger says: Damola, for example, for she is gaining through music.
Damola says: Would help to find whether its something with your char
Uadjet says: Yes, we can try and find out if one of those is somehow broken. I'd also suggest trying different scores and a different instrument, just in case.
Damola will play this very slowly
Damola says: not skilled enough
Gonger says: Try your own score, then.
Damola says: well I try with this score, playing slowly should also yield progress
Damola says: yap.
Damola says: no PP and no practice.
Damola says: Let me now try my lute
Gonger says: Give your score to Waesed.
Damola says: I am using his score currently.
Damola says: Now with my lute.
Uadjet says: So the score is giving no practice? What score is it?
Damola says: nope.
Damola says: no practice with that score also with my lute
Waesed says: must be the music
Gonger says: Let Waesed try your score that gives you progress.
Damola says: let me try Waesed's lute with another score
Damola says: ok, or that
Mordaan says: Excellent deduction. Seems it's the score.
Damola says: The the Singles Night one, Waesed.
Uadjet says: It's not one of the "Basic" scores, is it?
Damola says: Oh, I might have given you the wrong lute.
Damola says: Nope. Was the right one
Damola says: Should already be some PP and practice points by now
Damola says: got some?
Waesed says: nope, still nothing
Damola says: huh
Damola says: now that is strange.
Damola says: gives me PP
Damola says: and practice points
Damola says: may I try Singles Night with your lute?
Gonger says: So Waesed, you changed both instrument and score, and still nothing?
Damola says: Maybe both score and instrument is broke
Uadjet says: That would be most unusual.
Gonger says: Damola, can you give him your instrument?
Gonger says: So he can try your instrument and your score?
Damola says: That would be the next attempt.
Uadjet says: Gave you a 'fresh' lute, if you want to try using it Waesed.
Damola says: Now I am trying his lute with my score.
Damola says: practice points and pp also with Waesed's lute
Damola looks confused
Damola says: did it work?
Waesed says: still nothing- may be my level
Damola says: hmmm
Uadjet says: Try taking your jewelry off
Gonger says: So Waesed is broken. Delete the character!
Damola says: did you check system tab for progress?
Damola says: with your skill level you would not advance a whole skill level very quickly
Damola says: so you may not see a different in the bar, but in system tab there should be a text note about practice points and PP gained
Gonger says: This is the first time now that I hear Waesed playing.
Damola says: I heard him before
Damola says: Waesed, any progress note in system tab?
Damola says: it works here with your lute as well
Damola says: but it did not work with your scroll
Waesed says: still nothing
Damola says: even for a short playing time there should be at least some experience points
Damola says: Well I have no idea what else to try.
Uadjet says: Okay, gave your skill a kick. Give it another try, and then the next test is reloading the game and trying again.
Damola decides that she also has no skill advancement and wants a skill kick.
Damola giggles
Damola says: Waesed, if you use the score you gave me, I did not have progress with it… so might be best to try with a score that is known to work
Diuren says: I didn't expect to go on a concert today...
Waesed says: still none
Uadjet says: Are you using the score you used before?
Damola says: Maybe relog as well
Uadjet says: You can use this one as a test if you like.
Damola says: And?
Waesed says: I can't stop!
Uadjet says: Did you close the score while it was playing?
Damola says: yep, better don't close it
Waesed says: yup, bad on me
Damola says: but even a short time playing should at least give some experience points
Waesed says: I will return shortly
Damola says: there should be something in system tab
Uadjet says: Yeah, double-check the system tab to see if there's anything there about gaining practice points.
Damola smiles "Well I'd have another Q that I may chime in while Waesed continues to test."
Uadjet says: Please do, Damola.
Damola says: Rather an idea for when Unreal port is done: In the ruins near Gugrontid, where Nyshyn is, there are some steps downstairs that do not lead to anywhere.
Damola says: Would make a nice new underground area.
Damola says: Maybe with some riddles to solve and some ancient artifacts.
Damola giggles towards Zweitholou "Just in case you ever run out of areas to do, Zwei."
Gonger says: There are many such spots. Near the Hydlaa pterosaur port there is a door in the wall. Every time I pass I wonder what is behind it...
Damola says: Oh, I am not sure I've noticed that one so far.
Uadjet says: I think it's where they store the Hydlaa Glyphs.
Damola says: Hydlaa Glyphs?
Damola says: And Waesed, anything this time?
Uadjet says: And for those that havent' read the lore, those are apparently the most powerful glyphs. The city was named after them.
Waesed says: no, still nothing
Damola says: ah
Gonger says: I need to do more reading... One more RL week, and I will be on holiday.
Damola musters Waesed and then looks sorry, concluding "Sorry, your char is broke."
Waesed says: I must be cursed...lol
Damola makes "Haha."
Damola says: But there ought to be a reason for that.
Zweitholou smiles. "I'm sure we will not run out of areas for some time, but more 'dungeon' areas would be great."
Gonger says: How high is your skill without jewelry?
Mordaan says: Have to try with scores that are known to work at that level and higher.
Damola says: Hmmm, Uadjet, can you set yourself to exact the same skill level and try with that, Uadjet?
Uadjet says: Yeah, did it.
Damola says: And worked?
Uadjet says: I don't have the score he's using.
Damola says: That one that works for Damola, but it did not work for Waesed
Uadjet says: I'm not getting any training, but I'm a GM character and we tend to be a bit 'messed up'. It's a technical term.
Damola says: Hmmm I see.
Damola says: Well you can also set Damola to that skill level
Damola makes "Haha!"
Damola says: well, but maybe better go on testing after having heard the news or so
Damola says: I would have another suggestion as well, an idea.
Damola says: Well for PS that is.
Uadjet says: Okay, just loaded a score from my computer and got training.
Damola says: hmmm, okay.
Damola says: Maybe give Waesed that score?
Uadjet says: Try that one.
Damola says: Maybe with higher level easier scores do not give training anymore?
Uadjet says: Why do I have a text file named 'ammo list' in my musical scores folder?
Damola decides not wanting to hear that one.
Damola giggles "Bam, bam, bam, bam, bam!"
Uadjet says: There's also a file called 'notgonnawork.xml', but that sounds like something I'd do.
Gonger says: That is the soundtrack from Pulp Fiction...:)
Uadjet says: For a long time my router password was 'workthistimedammit'
Waesed says: got some!
Uadjet says: Nice!
Gonger says: Hu?
Mordaan says: Yay!
Damola says: Yay!
Damola looks to Uadjet "Would you give me the Singles score back?"
Uadjet says: Okay, so it's the scores. If you encounter this, try saving the score and then loading that filename in a blank score from the library.
Mordaan says: So at least Waesed is not broken. :)
Damola says: thx
Waesed says: thank you
Uadjet says: Yeah, it's something to do with the scores. Okay, that's a problem kinda solved.
Damola says: Well the Singles score definitely works for Damola
Uadjet says: Odd.
Damola says: Maybe really with a higher level they easier score don't give progress anymore?
Damola says: yes, giving practice, well whatever, now Waesed has a score that works
Damola makes "Don't break it, Waesed"
Damola giggles
Zweitholou says: Did you have another question Damola?
Uadjet says: Okay, Migg has delivered a musical instruments skill quest. It's an intro quest, not a repeatable, but it's clear progress. Looks like a great quest too.
Damola says: There was another suggestion for Unreal.
Damola says: How about adapting the fighting animation speed with higher agility?
Waesed says: problem solved with new music
Zweitholou says: We've discussed this, just a question of how much it can be scaled before it looks wrong
Zweitholou says: very easy to do though, so we'll use that as it is helpful
Damola makes "Then Damola can jump off her Rivnak and with her high agility make "Take this!" and "Take that!" and move her quarterstaff really fast
Damola says: Nice.
Zweitholou says: And Uadjet, great to hear about the quest!
Damola says: I bet there may be other animation improvements like character actually *holding* the instrument when equipped
Uadjet says: You don't like the hovering instruments?
Damola says: Currently it appears to be a magical instrument hovering in front of Damola.
Mordaan says: Yeah, there's lots of little visual improvements needed.
Damola says: Well it is kind of nice, well yes, so keep it that way
Zweitholou says: That could be done as ik snaps to instrument sockets
Damola says: Okay, that was it from my side.
Zweitholou says: also possible in unreal
Damola tilts her head "Any development news?"
Zweitholou says: I've been working on animation systems
Zweitholou says: right now i'm trying to implement gliding
Zweitholou says: for klyros normally, and others magically
Uadjet hops up and down with excitement.
Damola says: Well if my last suggestion was not a good introduction to that.
Damola says: Nice.
Mordaan says: ooh. :)
Zweitholou says: looks pretty straightforward conceptually but I'm still trying to get it working with the system we have
Uadjet sprouts wings of quartz and glides around the room.
Damola imagines a ton of nice pranks with gliding
Zweitholou says: It would be a gliding system, basically reduced gravity tied to stamina
Damola says: So there will be a new spell for that one, I bet.
Damola says: So there would be some limits to it?
Damola says: Otherwise player chars can access any places not mean for them.
Uadjet says: Yeah, precisely.
Damola says: Well some did anyway, but…
Zweitholou says: Yes, I'm not sure how it will be balanced yet, just in the early stage of figuring out how to implement it.
Damola says: Sure.
Damola says: Really nice.
Uadjet says: With gliding spells, we'd have a use for this:
>Uadjet dropped a Fly Glyph.
Damola says: How about swimming? What was the status there?
Damola says: Whoa, there is a fly glyph already.
Damola wanna have.
Damola eyes fly glyph
Zweitholou says: Swimming works in concept, Talad did a stream on it a while back. Just needs to be implemented
Gova says: Nice!
Zweitholou says: Talad will have time in another week or two to jump back in to the animation systems, so this can then plug in to that.
>Uadjet picked up a Fly Glyph
Damola says: Nice
Damola looks dissappointed that Uadjet secured fly glyph again
Mordaan says: There would also have to be work done on water volume.
>Uadjet dropped a Fly Glyph.
Damola says: Nice, Zweitholou
>Damola Etedi stands up.
>Damola Etedi takes a seat by Fly Glyph.
Uadjet says: Yeah, that's something like "volumetric effects" or something? Settings up regions that players can move through in every direction and also triggering certain animation. Not sure how complex it is, but it can't be the first time someone's had to do it in UE, so there must be examples out there.
Zweitholou says: There's lots of examples, just a matter of taking the time to set it up
Damola says: Of course with swimming there would be kind of a time limit, for non nolthrirs and non klyros
Zweitholou says: Yes, another balance issue to consider
Damola says: or not with swimming, but with diving
Damola says: Nolthrir can breeze under water and as war as I read, Klyros can too? I did I misunderstand something there?
Damola says: *as far
Uadjet says: Yes, both species have gills.
Uadjet says: As far as I know they can go underwater for as long as they please.
Damola says: Nice.
Zweitholou says: I have to head out, but enjoy the rest of the meeting!
Uadjet says: See ya!
Damola says: Thanks for update
Damola says: See you
Uadjet says: Okay, we're past time but I can mention that I've been doing a little more work on spears and staves.
Damola says: nice.
Damola believes the the lute does not hover in a healthy way with Uadjet
Uadjet says: Don't have any screenshots to share yet, as I spent more time than expected learning about how Unreal does rendering. "Physics Based Rendering". Sounds complex, but really amazing.
Uadjet says: No, I have been impaled by it.
Damola says: Monster instruments.
Uadjet says: Basically, in UE4 you will be able to see your reflection in the spearheads.
Damola says: Well looking forward to see this.
Damola says: nice.
Damola says: Or in a shield
Uadjet says: Really advanced stuff, but not as complex as I initially feared.
Uadjet says: Yeah, shields too.
Damola can use a shield then to see how to apply some color to her face then
Uadjet says: So I'm starting work on the higher poly version of items, which isn't as many triangles as I thought.
Uadjet says: I mean, the quarterstaff has I think 120 triangles, and the goal is for weapons to have 1000 in UE, so I have to trim down some of what I was planning.
Damola says: more and more reasons to look forward to unreal
Damola looks confused "But 120 is less than 1000"
Damola looks over her quarterstaff and starts to count triangles
Uadjet says: I was unclear. It's 120 now, but in Unreal the weapons should be closer to 1000. Some of what I have planned will likely go way over that, so I'll have to simplify a bit.
>Damola Etedi dropped a Quarterstaff.
>Damola Etedi picked up a Quarterstaff
>Damola Etedi dropped a Quarterstaff.
Uadjet says: It's the shaft carved so that it looks braided that's the triangle hog. I'll figure it out.
Damola says: I see
Diuren says: More details next time?
>Damola Etedi picked up a Quarterstaff
Uadjet says: But by next meeting I'll hopefully have the basic quarterstaves and at least the generic spears screenshot ready. I won't have the roughness/metallic/ambient occlusion maps that UE4 needs done, but I can still give you an idea of what they'll look like.
Damola says: nice.
Diuren says: Thank you for the news. I have to hurry now...
Damola says: would like to see some screenies in forum, as I am still not on discord, due to my dislike ot google recaptcha
Diuren waves goodbye.
Uadjet says: I'll start a dev blog thread on the spear project once I have some screenshots to post.
Damola says: Thank you.
Uadjet says: Okay, we're well past time so I think we can bring this meeting to an end. Thank you all for coming, and I hope to see you all again soon!

Oh, an update on the musical score issue. It may well have been just a matter of everyone's skill being too high to get xp from those particular scores at a certain Beats Per Minute. If you aren't getting training from a piece of music, try turning the BPM up higher than the suggested pace.

I second Uadjet's advice, scores have a defined speed which is the normal tempo for the song to be played at. As you gain skill levels, the XP you get from playing the score once may be less than 1, so you do not progress when playing. Increase the speed in the dialog that is shown when you press play (try something big, like 200, and a message will pop up saying "You can't play so fast, try playing at 95" or similar, set to the suggested speed and it will remember the settings until you close the music score.) Remember to increase the speed again if you gain a level.

Another issue I have encountered when reaching high levels: Since there is a maximum speed the game allows when playing (I don't recall the number) it may be that a score will not give you any XP even at the highest speed possible. Simply try some other music sheet, preferably something more complicated that is harder to play, and you will be able to train.

Finally, it seems the instrument used has no effect on the XP gained, that only depends on the music sheet and speed played. Music sheets that take a longer time to finish playing will also give more XP, so look for long songs.
